James Maddison’s comments definitely sent a clear message to negative fans...
That their pessimism isn’t helping the club or the players.
Some of our fans dwell on losses longer than the players do...
And that’s part of the problem.
It slows us down.
It spreads a mindset of doom.
When Maddison talked about his role as a senior player///
He emphasised the importance of lifting the group...
Especially the younger players...
And not dwelling too long on bad results.
He said:
“You need positivity… you want them to be feeling good and ready to go into Thursday.”
That directly contrasts with what some supporters have been doing...
Dragging on about poor results...
And feeding a culture of criticism.
Maddison made it clear the players aren’t ignoring the hurt...
They feel it too...
But they’re actively trying to turn things around...
And need unity...
Not division.
As for the reporter’s question about “do you owe the fans”...
Maddison’s answer quietly dismantled the flawed mentality behind it.
He replied:
“That hurts us as well. Let’s not create the narrative that it’s just them suffering. … We want to reward them… but we’re in this together.”
That was a sharp and classy way of rejecting the fan-victim/player-perpetrator mindset some people cling to.
It shows that true football mentality is collective...
It’s not about guilt or owing...
It’s about shared effort...
And bouncing back together.
He also rightly pointed out the pointlessness of words alone...
Acknowledging fans don’t care about post-match interviews...
They want performances.
That’s an honest admission...
But also a subtle challenge to supporters:
If words mean little...
Then don't let your own words become weapons against your team.
In short:
-
Maddison protected the squad from toxic energy,
-
challenged fans to join in the mission rather than judge from the sidelines,
-
and highlighted the mental impact of negativity.
Get out of the trap of negativity you've placed yourself in.
Togetherness is a weapon.
One we’re not using enough.
Because when fans back the players, confidence rises.
When confidence rises, performances rise.
And when performances rise...
Success comes faster.
Even Ange’s famous reference to the Stonecutter’s Creed ties into this.
It’s about repetition.
Consistency.
Hammering away, all of us.
“People look at success and see the tail end of it… they don’t see what’s gone into it.”
But unity?
That accelerates the process.
That takes a chisel and turns it into a wrecking ball.
Madison's rallying call to the fans was:
If you love this club...
Truly love it...
Stop feeding the negativity.
Don’t turn pain into poison.
Turn it into fuel.
You want to help Tottenham Hotspur?
Then do the one thing Ange and Maddison both believe in:
Stand with the club.
