Toronto FC Doneil Henry: How The Pros Get Ready

12:30 pm
This is an excellent little video with some good messages, not just for young footballers but for everyone. Doneil Henry answers questions in a sports store from a group of children who have come along to meet him.

Events like this may be small, they may be large but for a child to meet a star is a massive moment for them so I'd encourage any parent whose child is a Spurs fan to attend any events in your local area. The time and effort you spend arranging it and taking them will be rewarded with a hyper happy child, and a happy child equals a happy parent.

It will be a special day for them, a day that stands out, a day they won't forget and we all want to give our children days like those don't we.

VIDEO: Lamela goals, highlights, quotes

10:08 am
A refreshing view from the head coach Mauricio Pochettino, he is talented and we expect a lot. No excuses, no reservations, simply a message to produce the goods and that's exactly what Argentinian Erik Lamela did.

“We expect a lot from him, he’s an unbelievable player. He needs to show us that he deserves to play, but at the moment we are happy with his performance.”

He produced a performance in which he stood out and for the Lennon haters he looked as though he could adapt his game to a new role for him.

Lamela him self was very happy with his performance and took his chances well, the two goals will have done his confidence a power of good, that's exactly what we now need to see from Soldado.

“It’s something I would like [to carry my pre-season form into the upcoming campaign], but I have to continue to work. As the season progresses I will continue to get better.
“I felt like I was able to play a good 45 minutes. Overall I think the team did really well and I’m happy with the performance today.
“I had an unfortunate injury last season that kept me out of play for quite some time. In the same way, it’s helped me emotionally and morally to get better and work harder towards this season.”

It may only be a pre-season friendly but it was an encouraging first-half with the main players none the less. Kyle Walker is slowly recovering from his injury and was played in the second half, we shall have to wait and see if that indicates that Kyle Naughton is ahead of him in the pecking order at the moment or whether this was a case of win the game and then bring on the rest.

Was Walker eased but with the understudies and will resume as right-back when fully recovered or is Pochettino giving Naughton a chance to be the first choice?

Big difference between first & second halves

8:30 am
Tottenham beat Toronto 3-2 and it really was a game of two halves, we fielded two teams apart from goalkeeper Brad Friedel who is slow in diving to the floor now.

TFC vs THFC

As expected we saw a different Spurs back on a proper surface, grass. Ben Davies started at left-back with Kyle Naughton at right-back, Younès Kaboul and 18-year-old Miloš Veljković at centre-back in front of 43-year-old Brad Friedel.

The midfield was Étienne Capoue, Ryan Mason, with a triumvirate of Erik Lamela, Aaron Lennon and Christian Eriksen behind Roberto Soldado.

Right from the outset Tottenham were pressing the Toronto back line and was very busy, closing them down quickly. Aaron Lennon started on the left with Erik Lamela on the right, yet he scored both his first half goals from the left channel.

Cristian Ceballos catches they eye

That really emphasises what I have been writing since before we appointed Mauricio Pochettino, that he will want the front four interchanging. Aaron Lennon was involved in the left channel a lot and Soldado did little and struggled to have any impact. I haven't changed my view from before we signed Pochettino, I'm not sure he fits the system.

The second half from a Tottenham point of view was a mess. Ten changes with only Friedel keeping his place saw the midfield give little or no cover to the back four. Ceballos gave the ball away easily which allowed Toronto to run straight at our defence, one pass, goal. He catches the eye going forward but defensively non existent almost.

Carroll needs a Premier League loan spell, Holtby was a one man midfield almost. I thought at first he was playing his own system but I think those around him were so inexperienced he was trying to do it all.

Toronto gave the ball away, Holtby broke passed to Townsend who cut inside and shot past the keeper to record a win.

A marked drop in standard from our play in the first half, Lamela was the stand out performer and now it's on to Chicago for a game against the Fire.

King & Defoe careers intertwined

6:30 am
Ledley King and Jermain Defoe have seen their paths cross since they were youngsters with Senrab FC in East London.

Ledley King & Jermain Defoe

That continued with England Under 21'a, the England senior squad and Tottenham. Now with Tottenham visiting Toronto they were able to catch up again and recall the early days.

“I was two years older than Jermain, but I was well aware of him even when I was 10 or so and he was eight. I’d come off the pitch after my game and watch a little bit of his game. Sometimes he’d score six, seven, eight goals in a game. You could see he had a big career ahead of him.
“The funny thing is, he played with another striker who was the same size as him. They were really small guys, but they were deadly at the time.”

King made 323 appearances for Spurs, Defoe made 362. One was a master at stopping goals, one was a master at scoring them. In fact Defoe holds the record for scoring more goal at home (White Hart Lane) for Spurs than any other player and his 142 goals put him fifth on Spurs all time scoring charts.

Amazingly after scoring 11 goals in 14 games he already sits fifth on his new clubs MLS all time scoring charts, mind you Toronto FC has only been in the MLS since 2007. Those above him have 27, 17, 16 and 14 so he will no doubt be overtaking them soon.

In all games the all time leading goalscorer has 32, then two on 21, 19 and two more on 14 before Defoe. Most goals in a season 17, most goals in a league season 15. All records Jermain Defoe can expect to break.

He scored on his debut for Tottenham, West Ham, Portsmouth, England and Toronto which King acknowledges helps him win over supporters.

“He gets off to a great start with fans. Throughout the years, he’s given his all. It’s not always been easy for him. Sometimes he’s had to wait on the bench and wait for his chance. But he’s always scored goals when given the opportunity.
“And on a personal level, he’s always someone that comes in every day to train, work hard and give his all.”

Ledley King still has to manages his knee problem but having stopped playing it doesn't cause all the problems it did and now he relishes being involved as an Ambassador together with doing all the community work with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. It takes him all over the world and he has a busy schedule of events on this pre-season tour.

“On a day-to-day basis, I feel pretty good. I just try to keep the muscles strong around the knee, every now and then in the gym. A couple of times a week or so, and try not to overdo it.
“We have an amazing number of fans around North America. For me, it’s great to be able to come out and speak to them.”

Ledley has commitments to a local soccer club, Special Olympics athletes and the Official Supporters Club after a bust series of events in Seattle.

Spurs tour is important to build a fan base

2:30 pm
When you read quotes from some of the youngster in Major League Soccer (MLS) you can begin to understand the importance of these games to the development of football in America and the untapped fan base over there.

Spurs tour is important to build a fan base

As with any new market it is important to get in there first and Tottenham are doing all they can with an American kit sponsor in Under Armour and going on 3 pre-season tours in the last 5 years there.

Manchester United have done that rather well in Asia and particularly Japan. Tottenham need to grab as large a piece of the American pie as they can. Interest is high on the back of a good showing by the USA (USMNT - US Mens National Team) at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Football in America took off last year and the World Cup only helped that. A tour right after is an ideal time to introduce the club to new people. As a child if the first game you go to see is Tottenham Hotspur then there is a chance that child will grow up to be a Spurs fan.

But the chance to see Premier League stars is not just for the kids, younger players look forward to it too.

Give Pochettino a chance for gawds sake

Toronto FC manager Ryan Nelsen recalled his young days when he used to get the chance to play against Premier League opposition.

"When you rub shoulders against them it's kind of a bar to see where you are. That's how I used to liken it when I was a young guy, to see what the difference is. Can I match it with these guys?
"Once you get a bit older, once you play alongside these guys, you realise that they're human, they make the exact same mistakes as we all do out here and they're very similar. The gap's not as big as everybody thinks."

But probably more important are the words of two current youngsters who will get the chance to play tomorrow, 21-year-old defender Doneil Henry.

"Every time I can play an EPL team it really does mean something because that's where you want to be at the end of the day -- (the) top-flight."

Rookie defender Nick Hagglund was playing for Xavier University Musketeers against the likes of Villanova, Missouri State and Butler just a year ago.

"Any time you can play against the best, it gives you an opportunity to measure yourself where you are and also get exposure. It's going to be an extremely memorable moment."
The importance and enthusiasm shines through, it's no different that you yourself getting the chance to play against Tottenham, the guys can be star struck too.

The game may come during a bust schedule for Toronto FC but that just means that everyone will get some game time as they try to keep legs fresh. It's a chance for those on the bench to get a chance to impress Nelsen and a chance for Spurs to learn from the Seattle Sounders game while also giving their youngsters game time.
