Why Obika has signed a new contract

2:01 pm
As I speculated in an article on Monday May 19th which included a look at home grown players (The Spurs Summer Transfer Window Jigsaw) 24 year-old Jon Obika has signed a new contract.

Why Obika has signed a new contractHe is homegrown and seems to permanently be on loan at an age where he would expect him to either have broken through or be sold. We named him last year as a homegrown player in our Premier League squad and then loaned him out. If we need to name him we will do so again and then loan him out to a Championship side.

We have to name 8 home grown players, last year we named 10, two of those have left, Dawkins and Defoe leaving the bare 8 over 21.

It's a way round Premier League rules and a safety valve if we have too few home grown players. Previously 26 year-old Simon Dawkins was filling the same role.

Former number one Heurelho Gomes, Development Squad players Giancarlo Gallifuoco, Cameron Lancaster, Roman Michael-Percil, Jonathan Miles, Kevin Stewart, Lawrence Vigouroux and scholarship players Liam Priestley and Kane Vincent-Young have all been released.

Dominic Ball, Cristian Ceballos, Grant Hall and Grant Ward have all been retained.

Daniel Akindayini’s scholarship has been extended with professional contracts offered to Ruben Lameiras, Alex McQueen, Filip Lesniak, Aaron McEneff, Luke McGee, Will Miller, Connor Ogilvie, Emmanuel Sonupe, and Harry Winks.

New contracts have been offered to Brad Friedel who makes his own assessment each month how his body is doing and Souleymane Coulibaly, while Nathan Oduwa has had his contract extended.

Darren McQueen has joined Ipswich and Laste Dombaxe has also left the club.

Hurelho Gomes we already knew about leaving after the Sandro tweet which frees up £50,000 a week from the wage bill, while a new one year contract for 43 year-old Brad Friedel makes signing a number two not quite such a pressing issue and allows him to continue his coaching badges while with us.
