Son Heung-min second most valuable Spurs player
Transfer Fees
Everyone shouting about Daniel Levy putting in, low ball offers (which every club does to lower expectation ahead of a negotiation) should note that Tottenham transfer target Giovani Lo Celso is independently valued at below £54.45m.

Real Betis are asking £66.79m

Harry Kane £138.54m
Heung-min Son £86.76m
Tanguy N'dombélé £61.59m
Nicolo Zaniolo £60.97m
Lucas Moura £57.58m
Christian Eriksen £54.72m
Eden Hazard £107.74m

Lyon are asking between £53m and £71m for Tanguy N'dombélé and our opening offer was £44.53m.

For all of you about to rant and rave about Eriksen, his value is because he only has a year left on his contract, if he signs another then his transfer value will shoot up. At the moment, as his contract runs down, he is a depreciating asset.

Ozan Kabak

The news a week ago was that Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Schalke, and Arsenal were all interested in 19-year-old (20 next March) Stuttgart and Turkey defender Ozan Kabak.

The news from Turkey is that Monaco has won the race for his signature and that he is near a €15m (£13.35m - $16.83m) move to AS Monaco.

One o cross off your list.

Transfer Talk: Lo Celso, Friedel, Ceballos, Eriksen

Giovani Lo Celso

The news from Spain, from Estadio Deportivo suggests that Tottenham are willing to pay an extras €30m (£26.71m - $33.79m) on top of the initial offer for Giovani Lo Celso.

That would take Spurs to €70m (£62.33m - $78.85m) with LaLiga side Real Betis asking for €75m (£66.79m - $84.49m) not the €100m (£89.05m - $112.65m) wrongly reported by British journalists. That is his release clause, not his transfer fee.

It should be noted that Spanish clubs often leak information to the press during negotiations, they will talk to reporters outside the ground as soon as they come out of a meeting, that doesn't happen over here.

Despite interest from other clubs, I expect Spurs to get this deal done and he is a player that really excites me to see in a Spurs shirt. He is in a 4-man midfield on Saturday night, possibly starting on the right, he is left-footed, indeed he has a wand of a left foot.

Personally, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this story has legs, especially given that Real Betis vice-chairman and CEO José Miguel López Catalán was in London meeting the hierarchy at Spurs.

Meeting such as this are where a general consensus can be gained in an informal atmosphere. It;s fingers crossed for this one.

Brad Friedel

A nice article from and about former Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel. In it he talks about his time at Tottenham and learning that youngsters think differently now, they don't just think about lifting trophies now.

"It was a little bit eye-opening to see what they truly felt was important. Way back when, it was only about lifting the FA Cup or the Premier League trophy. That changed over the years. Contracts became important. Houses and cars became important. Your public brand and peoples’ perceptions of you became important."
Brad Friedel

Dani Ceballos

Cadena SER, Spain's premier radio network, reports that Lyon will make a formal offer for 22-year-old (23 in August) Real Madrid midfielder Dani Cellebos. The youngster is not wanted at the Spanish club who need to raise funds to continue their overhaul of an aging and complacent squad.

They have told him to find a new club and the online radio station are expecting Tottenham to make a bid too.

Christian Eriksen

French newspaper L'Equipe are suggesting that Real Madrid received very negative reports about Christian Eriksen's attitude and for a coach the signs are evident.

Yes, he is a talented player, yes he has worked to improve his game, but, is it getting better, stagnating or going backward?

Did he stamp himself on the Champions League Final, his Real Madrid audition in effect, his last chance to convince Zinidine Zidane that he should be the man to buy, not Paul Pogba?

Adrea Pirlo was very critical of his performance, suggesting he was hiding during the game.

Are his free-kicks improving?

He seems to me to be jogging along at the same level, blowing hot and cold. There are games when his teammates are not good enough off the ball around him and other games where he isn't good enough and then games where he excels, usually when we have runners ahead of him.

The interesting thing for me is, if he stays and it is true his agent is discussing a new four-year contract, how he will perform with better players?

I'll say it again, a winning mindset means you work every day to improve every aspect of your performance to keep getting better and better in tiny steps. Someone who is simply trying to win on the football pitch is trying to win yes, but that isn't a winning mentality, it's just a small part of it. That player will ALWAYS be surpassed by a player with a proper winning mentality.

Transfer Talk - Skov, Eriksen, Pellerini, Zaniolo

Transfer Talk today brings news of Tottenham interest in 23-year-old (24 in May) Copenhagen winger Robert Skov. Watford and Wolves are also following him.

Stories abound in Italy and it is suggested new Inter Milan boss wants Eriksen and Son and will offer 30-year-old (31 next February) Ivan Perišić. There have also been reports of offering him to Manchester United in part exchange for Paul Pogba.

A 30-year-old winger is of no use to Spurs and neither offer will be entertained. It is highly doubtful that either player would want to go to Inter anyway as it would be a step down from where they are now.

PSG and Juventus remain interested in Eriksen after Zidane won the power struggle with Perez over Eriksen or Pogba. Zidane is not convinced by Eriksen and as I wrote previously, he failed his audition in the Champions League Final.

Eriksen Blows His Real Madrid Audition

Roma star Lorenzo Pellegrini would be happy to join Tottenham and wants UEFA Champions League football next season, which Roma can't supply. His agent is currently in London and will no doubt be in contact with the club.

The 22-year-old (23 on 19th June) central midfielder and Italian international (he has10 full international caps) has a release clause of €35m (£31.14m - $39.60m) and Roma would like to offer him a new contract, remove or significantly raise that release clause.

That would mean a decent increase in wages and they have no guaranteed European football having only qualified for the Europa League qualifiers, so are at a bit of a disadvantage.

Tottenham have reportedly dropped interest in Nicolo Zaniolo, the Roma midfielder wanted by Juventus. The Italian champions are his preference and that may have just as much bearing as Spurs chasing Giovani Lo Celso and Bruno Fernandes.

Transfer Talk: Eriksen and Praet

Christian Eriksen told Mauricio Pochettino at the beginning of the season that he was leaving at the end of it and now he has announced it to the world through Danish media.

He reiterated his desire to leave to Pochettino and Daniel Levy 10 days prior to the final so the news will not be a shock to Spurs. There is much speculation that Pochettino has chosen Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso as his successor, although Tottenham has made contact with Leicester City about James Maddison and have his as an alternative option.

That new Challenge is either going to be at Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich or Juventus, with Real Madrid the favourites, Juventus in second place, Bayern Munich third and PSG fourth.

There will be plenty of people now changing their tune about him, but a section of us who will retain the view that we have held and that will now become popular.

He is a quality player but he is not world class, he goes missing too many times in games, as he did in the UEFA Champions League Final.

He likes to spend his time behind the ball and thus is suited to Pirlo playmaking role from deep that Luca Modric plays for Real Madrid. He doesn't play the number 10 role as he doesn't get in the box a great deal. His shooting from free kicks is poor, what is it one goal in 2 seasons or is it 3?

Buy a quality player and I don't think he is that difficult to replace, he is no Gareth Bale that's for sure.

Eden Hazard went for £88.7 million( €100m) with a year left on his contract so I'd expect Christian Eriksen to go for the same amount, as I can't see Daniel Levy accepting anything less.

Tottenham used to track Belgian midfielder Dennis Praet and we were linked with him before he moved to Sampdoria in Italy.

Praet now wants to leave for a top club in one of the top 4 leagues (Italy, Spain, England, Germany) he told HLN Sport.

He doesn't want French football it would seem. He says he has no release clause but has an agreement that he can look at offers that come in. If the fee is acceptable he won't be held back.

Christian Eriksen Blows His Real Madrid Audition

I have reported several times that Zinidine Zidane prefers Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba to Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen.

Real Madrid president Fiorentino Perez however, prefers Eriksen over Pogba and there is a bit of a power struggle at the club as they both look to overhaul the squad, something Zidane has never had to do before.

The UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid (Atlético Madrid Wanda Metropolitano stadium) was a showcase for the talents of Christian Eriksen.

Here he had the chance to show the world what he could do on the big occasion, more immediately, he had the chance to show doubter Zinidine Zidane what he could do and secure a move to Real Madrid.

He did nothing, indeed according to Italian midfield legend Andrea Pirlo, he hid.

He didn't take risks, he didn't break the lines, he just played the simple pass, in other words, he abdicated responsibility to create onto someone else. He should have produced so much more.

Zidane will use Eriksen's poor performance to reinforce his view that Pogba can make the quality jump whereas Eriksen can't.

If Zizu gets his way, that would seem to leave Juventus, if and when Sarri joins them as head coach.

How much legs that story has we will have to wait and see.

Eriksen and Rabiot

Spanish newspaper AS are suggesting that Real Madrid are keen to include attacker James Rodriguez in any potential deal with Tottenham Hotspur for Christian Eriksen.

They wish to lower the cost of any potential deal but Spurs have asked for either Isco or Marco Asensio to be included if such a deal were to happen. Real Madrid I understand have agreed to Isco, that doesn't mean the player has agreed to Spurs though.

If Real Madrid wants to sign Eriksen he wants to join them, understandable. Money is irrelevant in this situation as is winning a trophy or buying players.

Real Madrid is Real Madrid and if they come calling you go, you'll usually only get one chance in your life so you don't turn them down.

Tottenham have made an offer to sign PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot report Paris United. Currently he has an agreement with Barcelona with a €10m signing on fee and just over €10m wages.

Spurs are offering a less lucrative deal Mauricio Pochettino is expected to talk directly to the Frenchman this evening. Undoubtedly the situation of Eriksen will be discussed and how the two could play together and discussions as to potentially taking his place.

Tottenham Injury Update and Eriksen waiting on Real Madrid

Tottenham Injury Update and Eriksen waiting on Real Madrid

Tottenham have had a string of injuries after 9 players returned late after the World Cup, where we had more players go further in the tournament than any other club.

That placed pressure on us as tired players are more likely to pick up injuries through fatigue than fresh players, particularly muscle injuries and we have had a few of those.

Over half our senior squad have had an injury this season and we are only half way through it!

🔹 Erik Lamela (illness) – returned to training with the squad yesterday following a calf injury but is unavailable for tomorrow’s match due to illness.

🔹 Eric Dier (appendicitis) – commenced on-field reconditioning. 🔹 Victor Wanyama (knee) - continuing outdoor rehabilitation.

🔹 Mousa Dembele (ankle).- has returned to training with the squad today but remains unavailable.

🔹 Jan Vertonghen (thigh) - has returned to training with the squad today but remains unavailable.
Pochettino has held his press conference and has spoken about Christian Eriksen, who as I have reported regularly is waiting for Real Madrid to see if they are going to firm up interest and make an approach.

"Football is dynamic. It's about interests the manager sometimes can't manage. Eriksen is important to us. You'd like this type of player with you, but it's a negotiation. It would be fantastic if he commits long-term but he has every right to do what he wants."

Real Madrid are the biggest name in football and it is natural for every player to want to play for them. It has nothing to do with offering more money, Real Madrid have won the last three UEFA Champions League finals and have picked up the trophy four times in the last five years.

Signing a top player is going to make no difference, nor is £200,000-a-week. No club can compete with the romantic pull of Real Madrid, it's as simple as that.

The Danish international, who has now been involved in 100 Premier League goals (45 ⚽️, 55 🅰️) in just 189 appearances (debut 2013) has provided more assists than anyone (55), created more chances than any other player (501) since making his debut.

In addition, no player has scored more goals outside the box than him (18).

A huge valuation can be justified in a football world where statistics play a very important part in recruitment.

Rose, Eriksen, Pochettino, Moura

Rose, Eriksen, Pochettino, Moura

Danny Rose is now set to stay at Spurs according to reports in all the media, surprising that given there wasn't a chance of him leaving anyway. Journalists showing they don't understand football again, just writing.

The England international is part of our homegrown and club-trained players, if he went it affects our UEFA Champions League squad and it affects the non-homegrown players we can pick.

For that reason alone there is no chance of him going anywhere as we can now not address that issue until January, when we are unlikely to want to see him leave if we are still in the Champions League anyway, or more likely next summer.

"If I'm here past Friday, which I'm expecting to be, which will be great, I'm looking forward to seeing what we can achieve at the end of the season. Me and the manager have had a conversation over the phone, as well as two one-hour meetings over the last couple of weeks."
Journalists got that one wrong, they have also been trying to make an issue out of Christian Eriksen and after suggesting Barcelona and Real Madrid, then turned to PSG, who can't actually afford to buy players at the moment. They need to sell to conform to Financial Fair Play.

Mauricio Pochettino was asked what the key to the win at Old Trafford was and his reply is something all those Twitter fans shouting for money to be spent should take onboard. Other clubs didn't want to release the players we wanted to buy, just as Alderweireld, Dembele and Rose didn't go anywhere.

"I think it's the belief. It's always the belief in the way we work, the trust, the confidence and of course all together trying to fight for one objective.

"Today was clear that we were a team, not only on the pitch but outside it and I think that this week was so good.

"We worked so hard preparing the game and yes it's so important. Of course we have very good players but if we don't show that togetherness it's so difficult to win at a place like Old Trafford."

We have assembled a team, a squad within our financial constraints, constraints some fans simply refuse to believe or understand.

Lucas Moura was thought to be the next big Brazilian when he went to PSG and it didn't work out for him there, so instead of paying £100m like Barcelona did for Ousame Dembele, who has flopped, we picked him up for £25m and look to bring out the player that is in there.

What a bargain if we do, he triples in value immediately then and like it or not you always have to aware of the sale price of any player just in case they decide they want to move on.

This was our team on Monday night.

Lloris £11.8m
Trippier £3.5m Alderweireld £11.5m Vertonghen £9.5m Rose £1m Dier £4m Dembele £15m Alli £5m Eriksen £11.5m Moura £25m Kane £0 Total: £97.8m Pogba cost: £89m

Our policy clearly works. The team is good enough to win trophies and will be added to as and when it becomes possible to get the right players, not just any players.

No Eriksen issue, Georgiou and early signings next summer

No Christian Eriksen transfer issue, N'Koudou vs Georgiou and preparing for early signings next summer

Transfer Talk

The press are comical aren't they, Spurs have to brace themselves for Real Madrid interest in Christian Eriksen.

Laughable, Eriksen will know he is not going anywhere and Spurs would not let him go anywhere. The transfer window is shut for Premier League clubs to buy so no replacement could be bought or loaned if he were to leave, thus he ain't leaving full stop.

The Dane created 5 chances yesterday, the rest of the Tottenham team created 4 between them. Even when he might appear to be quiet he is influential.

Clubs in Europe might still be able to buy, but there are going to come a cropper if they came calling to Spurs, unless it is for player well on the fringe like Vincent Janssen, who has not made the grade and Georges-Kevin N'Koudou, another who looks out of his depth.

What is the difference between 23-year-old (24 next February) and 21-year-old (22 next February) Anthony Georgiou? One is French, one plays for Cyprus, although left sided midfielder Georgiou is homegrown, N'Koudou is not.

This year that does not matter, he is too young, but next season Grergiou counts as a homegrown player (see a later article for more on the homegrown situation in the future).

He showed glimpses in America while N'Koudou was in the right place at the right time to score a couple. I think Georgiou still has a long way to go to push for a first team place so he will have to show mental strength and a burning desire to get there.

His contract was extended in November until 2020, N'Koudou has a contract until 2021.

N'Koudou spent last season on loan and thus he wouldn't be missed if he were loaned out again or sold in preparation for the winter transfer window or more probably next summer when it would then be possible to make an early signing or two, if Janssen was sold as well.

Fenerbache and St Etienne have shown an interest in N'Koudou, a return to the French Ligue 1 where he will be a homegrown player makes sense, French clubs will want him cheap though.

Transfer Talk - Rafael Toloi

THBN -Looks like a Fake News story involving Rafael-Toloi

Mediaset Premium suggest Tottenham are considering making a move for 27-year-old (28 in October) Atlanta centre-back Rafael Toloi.

His age suggests this is a fake news story, I do not see us buying a non-home grown player of this age as a centre-back, which suggests our name in being used to either generate interest in the Brazilian or to get him a better contract.

Transfer Talk - Vincent Janssen

Fenerbahçe want Vincent Janssen back on loan

Turkish club Fenerbahçe have offered £2.19 million (€2.5m) to take Tottenham forward Vincent Janssen on loan for another season, an offer we have rejected. They payed the same last summer and wanted to send him back when he broke his leg, but we were having none of it.

Transfer Talk - Christian Eriksen wanted by Barcelona

Barcelona targets for central midfield vacancy

Five possible contenders for the central midfield vacancy at Barcelona. All the press in Spain are suggesting that Christian Eriksen would be impossible to sign because of the fee that Daniel Levy would demand, but he is the one they all seem to think would be best for Barcelona, as did their fan poll. The Dane came out number one choice.

Frenkie de Jong (AFC Ajax)
Thiago Alcantara (Bayern München)
Miralem Pjanic (Juventus FC)
Adrien Rabiot (Paris Saint Germain)
Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur)

Transfer Talk - Matias Vecino

THBN - Vecino doesn't look like a genuine Tottenham target

The Italian press are continually linking Inter Milan players with Tottenham, it seems to happen every window and we seem to have been offered or are interested in, every player they have. Most of these stories therefore must be fake. A common theme is that when a player can't get in the side or is perceived to be not wanted by their coach, he gets linked to us.

The latest in this long line is 26-year-old (27 in August) midfielder Matias Vecino who Tuttosport suggest we are keen on, together with Everton. The Uruguayan is at the World Cup and is valued at around £26.26 million (€30m).

I do not see this one as having any legs, he is of the wrong age again. Turning 27 as the season starts doesn't give us many seasons before the central midfielder turns 30 and his resale value isn't going to shoot up.

We prefer continuity, had he been a couple of years younger then he might have been a more viable proposition. We do not want to be buying a player to replace Mousa Dembélé, only to have to replace him again in a couple of years.

What does Griezmann decision mean for Eriksen?

What does the future hold for Eriksen with the Griezmann announcement

Christian Eriksen

Well in a turn up for the books 27-year-old (28 next March) French international Antoine Griezmann has announced he is staying at Atlético Madrid. The reason he hadn't announced it before was because the announcement was part of a 50-minute documentary.

That is a bit of a first to release information, the start of a trend perhaps. This is not good news for Barcelona who were quite convinced they had him and you would think they would now like to make a big name signing to appease their fans.

Will they now come hunting for Christian Eriksen? Barcelona needs a midfield maestro having lost Xavi and Iniesta. Philippe Coutinho has not been the success centrally they had hoped and talk is he will be moved wide to the wing and a new central midfielder brought in.

The figure we are supposed to have quoted before we will even contemplate talking was reported as £165.79 million (€190m).

Eriksen showed his skill once again by creating the Denmark goal against Peru, His assist was his 17th goal (12) or assist (5) in his last 14 international games for Denmark.

It's not hard to see why the top clubs in the world are interested in him, fortunately though, he is at the best club in the world.

Pochettino 5 day limit, Dutch winger, Italian striker and a Spanish poll

Dutch Winger

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf have reported that Tottenham are closely monitoring 20-year-old (21 in October) PSV winger Steven Bergwijn. They suggest the Dutchman will fetch a fee of between €15-20m.

Tottenham regularly sends scouts to Dutch and Belgian football, Rob Mackenzie went every week and regularly did three countries across a busy weekend of football. These were two countries we identified where there might be some value in signing players rather than paying higher prices elsewhere. The French league was another league we targetted, hence our chief scout being an expert in French football.

We have taken a special interest in Bergwijn since January and have had him watched most games.

Italian Striker

Spurs have been following 23-year-old (24 in August) Domenico Berardi for years now and their chairman has mentioned Spurs as a club who are following him. Five goals and two assists from 33 games last season suggests his stock has fallen and his price tag fallen substantially as a result.

News From Spain

Barcelona identified Christian Eriksen as a possible Iniesta replacement (he has gone to China for a payday before he retires), however, Daniel Levy's €190m valuation has put them off, that's around £166/7 million.

The Sport newspaper had a poll, 9000 took part and they have voted for Eriksen to be signed over anyone else which demonstrates the stature he has with opposition fans and clubs in Europe.

Again in Spain and this time Marca newspaper, who are obsessed with Mauricio Pochettino. Now they are suggesting the Spurs boss has set himself a 5-day limit to decide his future.

Marca claims that Real Madrid have approached Mauricio Pochettino through a friend who acts as his agent, yet former Spurs captain Graham Roberts, who is still involved with the club on match days, and others tell us that Mauricio Pochettino doesn't have an agent, he conducts all negotiations himself.

He negotiates for his coaching staff as well and I'm sure I remember he himself saying he did all his own negotiations. That casts a different light on the Marca story and as Real Madrid's mouthpiece, it seems to be the same tactics they employed to get Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.

They again suggest (today) there is an agreement between Pochettino and Levy to let him join Real Madrid, something Pochettino himself has denied to the Spanish press.

Barcelona and Real Madrid want Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen

Barcelona and Real Madrid are casting eyes at Christan Eriksen, both teams need a revamp of players, despite both winning tournaments. Zinidine Zidane talking to the press at his resignation made some telling comments.

"The time is right. It's not a decision I've taken lightly. I thought about it carefully and it's the right decision, even though I imagine many may not agree.
"After three years Real Madrid needs a change, another way of working, another idea if we are to continue winning. I feel it's going to be difficult to continue winning and because I'm a winner, I'm going."
That sound like there needs to be an overhaul at Real Madrid, this article explains it more fully.

Spanish national daily sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo report that Barcelona enquired about Eriksen through agents and were told that Spurs would only consider selling for around £167.14 million (€190m). The newspaper has its headquarters in Barcelona which would add weight to the story being accurate.

Barcelona, who could have signed Eriksen in 2008 for £1.76 million (€2m), wanted him to replace Andrés Iniesta, who has left for his final payday in China.

There are suggestions that the Spanish giants are going to come back with a bid of around £138 million and it is known that, unsurprisingly, Coutinho wants to leave and join them.

If we look at the statistics for Christian Eriksen and Coutinho we see Eriksen come out on top. Does this give a guide price for anyone wanting to buy 25-year-old (26 next February) Eriksen?

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a third-choice goalkeeper he knows well, 25-year-old (26 next January) Paulo Gazzaniga from Southampton. He provides us with experienced cover should Hugo Lloris suffer an injury and we have to rely on Michel Vorm between the sticks.

Uninspiring to some, three goalkeepers are essential to clubs aiming to challenge for honours at the top of the league. His last Premier League game was in 2015 against Spurs.

he looks like a stop gap keeper until one of our youngsters develops or we make a move for Pau Lopez at the end of the season when he becomes a free agent. Both Brad Friedel and Carlo Cudicini have performed the role in the past.

Gazzaniga is an Argentinian (born in Murphy) with an Italian passport and has signed a five-year contract giving him security until 2022. He has played 22 games for Gillingham, 23 games for Southampton, 34 on loan at Spanish Liga 2 side Rayo Vallecano last season and 38 games for Southampton Under-23's.

Verratti, Coutinho, Eriksen

The agent of Barcelona linked Marco Verratti believes that his player is "out of reach" of the clubs in Serie A. That paves the way for Barcelona to come and get him, he is their main target the regular reports from Spain suggest.

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho and Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen are the secondary options it seems and Eriksen has already said he would jump at the chance of joining Barcelona basically. Unsurprising given they are one of the major clubs in the world and he is ambitious.

Having that desire to get to the top is important and something we want to see in our players. If they want to reach the top they will have to continually be looking to improve and that aids us. we will keep getting more from players and we will keep improving as a side which in turn takes us nearer the very top.

We are always going to lose some players along the way, they have short careers and can not wait forever so moving is the quick option. W have a path to follow and we take the rough with the smooth along the way to gradually grow.

If Verratti signs then we can rest easy that we might be seeing Eriksen for another couple of years so it is news to look out for.

Slowing the game down made for a tense victory, Kane takes the mickey

4:40 pm

The pre-game article picked out Christian Eriksen as the important player today and he certainly didn't disappoint. scoring the first after a sweet Spurs move and playing some sublime through balls.

Pre-game article: Stats show the importance of Eriksen today

The first half was ours and we looked in control of the game at 2-0 but they scored a sloppy early goal that we should have cleared and we started playing at a slower pace. It is in that mode when we pass to keep the ball rather than create quickly that we often struggle.

When you are playing with intensity, it is easy to maintain it, but when you slow down it is very difficult to regain intensity when the opposition score or simply that you need to up your own game. It is no good a few upping their intensity as it has to come from all to be effective. Mentally if you are in amble around mode and play the easy possession pass then you are in the wrong mindset to apply any intense pressure to the opposition.

We suffered from that in the second half which allowed Southampton more possession and meant we always had to be on our toes defensively. A sloppy pass here and there and we are under pressure we don't need to be under.

Fortunately Shame Long kept straying offside, at least according to the officials and we kept the threat at bay for the most part, but it is living on a knife edge. Harry Kane saw the funny side with his tweet.

Yes boys!! Great result! Good victory before the break! I much prefer being on the pitch then watching it! 😵

The win maintains us in second place ten points behind Chelsea and now nine above Arsenal, who have sunk to sixth place behind Manchester United.

Stats show the importance of Eriksen today

12:30 pm

Christian Eriksen started the season slowly once again and then picked up his performances after he had signed a new contract with quiet rumours circulating that he would only be at the club another season.

Our progress, we are challenging at the top of the Premier League again, but with little chance of success, may mean that he will stay longer. It isn't that he is unhappy at the club but some players are driven by trophies and financially bigger clubs have taken an interest in him and continue to watch him.

Losing him is an eventuality we have to plan for, as we have to for every player. He would leave a hole to fill given our backup wide men have been absent or poor this season. His importance to us can be seen in the statistics below.

We need him to step up to the plate today and produce a performance that helps us to victory.

Most chances created in the Premier League this season
Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur) 77 in 2,274 minutes
Dimitri Payet (West Ham United) 72 in 1,515 minutes
Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) 70 in 2,003 minutes

Most chances created in the Champions League this season
Lucas Moura (PSG) 25 in 512 minutes
Dani Alves (Juventus) 20 in 551 minutes
Koke (Atlético Madrid) 20 in 698 minutes
Christian Eriksen (Tottenham Hotspur) 19 in 451 minutes
Neymar (Barcelona) 18 in 617 minutes
Toni Kroos (Real Madrid) 18 in 554 minutes

Pochettino wants to know if Eriksen has the drive to become great

5:00 pm

Does Christian Eriksen have it in him to take his game to the next level?

Mauricio Pochettino believes every player needs to keep improving report the Daily Mail, well doesn't every coach! I certainly do and regularly write as much, it is what separates the good from the great and we want the great at Tottenham, even if we have to make them ourselves.

Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo didn't become the players hey are because they were content with a high level of performance, they wanted to keep improving and ge better and better. Players stagnate because they don't have that winning mentality that separated some from others. As a winner you do not train or play for fun, as a winner you do not play any sport for fun, you don't play a card game for fun. You'll enjoy it yes, but you'll play to win, every time.

It is either in you or it isn't, it is very hard to instill it because you have to change an inner belief. If it is here hen it can certainly be brought out and enhanced, played on to drive someone forward. Responsibility can do that so driving Christian Eriksen to become even more creative, to play him off against the creation of Dele Alli and for the two to complement each other to enhance each individual is certainly one tactic.

What separates Mauricio Pochettino from many other coaches is that he wants to improve players, change their mentality, show them how winners behave, act, play, think. Some managers just put the components of a team together and play a system, some do that and develop players.

"I think the whole team has improved in the last two years but we still need to improve a lot. He has showed very good performances in the last few months and we are very happy.
"But it is true, always in football it is never enough and he can improve. I think he is one of the best creative players in the Premier League but that doesn't mean he cannot achieve a better level.
"We are here to push him to improve every day and achieve a different level."

Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs are an ideal match, his vision is our vision.
