Southend take Coulthirst on season loan

We can at last dispense with supporters suggesting a player not ready for the Premier League should be given a chance.

Southend take Coulthirst on season loan

Southend United of League Two have signed 19-year-old Shaquile Coulthirst on loan after his loan spells at Leyton Orient and Torquay United last season.

It amazes me that a player has a loan spell in League Two, isn't selected for a pre-season tour is then suggested by fans as someone we should give a chance to. Yes he made his 12 minute debut against Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League last season but written into many contracts is a guarantee of one game.

It's a Tottenham policy to dangle the carrot, to show them first team action and say that's what you are aiming for, work for it. Often that may mean just including them in a squad for a Premier League game just to see what a match day is all about, it helps settle the nerves when the time comes round again. That's the role Couthirst filled in March 2013 when he sat on the bench for a game against Liverpool.

At only 19 the England U19 striker has developing to do, some 19-year-old are ready, some are not, bottom line, he is not. A season long loan gives him a chance to be a central figure and speed up his development with plenty of game time.

He is looking forward to the challenge as he told the Southend website.

“I’m really pleased to have joined on a season-long loan, it gives me the chance to really make an impression.
“I had a couple of loan spells last season and know what this division is all about, so I can’t wait to start at Accrington Stanley on Saturday.”

Couthirst was the target of four other clubs so Southend United manager Phil Brown was delighted to secure his signature together with that of defender Mads Ibenfeldt and forward Isaac Layne.

“I'm very pleased to be signing these players and to be bolstering our squad before the start of the season.
“Mads is someone who has impressed me during pre-season, especially in the game we had against QPR.
“It's good news he's agreed a one year deal and I'm also very pleased to be bringing in Shaquile who I think could be a very exciting player for us.
“He's agreed a year long loan with us but there is a break clause in it, similar to the one we had with Cauley Woodrow from Fulham.”

Let's hope he bangs in a plenty of goals for them and has an injury free season as he develops his game.
