Strachan - Pochettino is one of the top 3 managers in the world

8:30 am
Gordan Strachan - "I think he is one of the top 3 managers in the world right now, I really do."

Pochettino is one of the top 3 managers in the world

Those were Gordon Strachan's opening words for the commentary team on ITV4 tonight. He was talking about Mauricio Pochettino because as a manager he has brought something new to the Premier League. Strachan was a player and manager himself so when a manager rates another manager it's worth listening.

He felt the players were happy at White Hart Lane, that this squad has the quality to challenge in all competitions, they are that good he said in his closing remarks. It's nice to know a former national team manager rates our man so highly and our squad so highly, a squad we are still looking to improve.

The Argentinian boss was not happy with the first half performance of some of his side against AEL Limassol. Clarke Carlisle  talks a lot of nonsense but then intersperses it with accurate observations, he's a frustrating commentator. He pointed out it's no good playing for yourself in a system because it won't please the manager. He wants them to do as they are asked to do, that will impress him.

Mauricio Pochettino could be seen throwing his arm in the air and sitting back in his seat as if annoyed when Harry Kane tucked away the first goal. He was basically saying that's what we should have done earlier.

Paulinho looks lost, there are rumours he is on his way, he was aware enough to cut out a pass and play Kane in. That was all he did in the first half and I suspect that Pochettino's annoyance was aimed at Paulinho for not playing how he has been asked to play. However in the second half he improved immensely. He scored after 4 minutes but he was chasing the ball back as the side where closer to the strikers and AEL had no space to play the ball out from the back.

Dembele stepped up his game from the first leg and had a good first half playing a lovely long ball to put Kyle Naughton in who was then taken out by the goalkeeper for a penalty, which Kane missed after a 7 minute injury delay. The keepers head had smashed into Naughton's knee and he went off to hospital with concussion and and blood coming from his damaged nose.

What is the right selection balance between the Europa League & Premier League

The Spurs players must have got a rocket at half-time because we saw a different team in the second half, the same layers but a different team. Four the first 4 minutes Tottenham harried, chased, attacked, lost the ball, immediately chased it back, lost it, chased it back, lost it, chased it back and scored. In those first 4 minutes AEL kept getting the ball but couldn't get it out of their own half.

The were some two stand out performances. Sandro and Harry Kane. Sandro played as he did before his injury. Until now he has been very ordinary but in this game he showed why Daniel Levy is not entertaining the £7.96 million ($13.18m - €10m) bids being made.

You could read his performance three ways, he wanted to show perspective buyers what he could do or he now knows he's staying and wanted to show Mauricio Pochettino what he could do or thirdly he is only just returning to full fitness. Take your pick, whichever fits your view.

Harry Kane missed chances, missed a penalty but he also scored and was always available for the ball. He brought people into play, he played the ball off first time, he held on to the ball and held the defenders off before lying the ball off.

It was a game for the second ream who got the result and then took the foot off the gas once we were 3-0 up. Objective achieved, European football to keep the squad happy.

Pochettino - It's an important game

2:56 pm
For Tottenham tonight is one of the seasons vital games. It's a game where failure can not be allowed to rear it's ugly head. European football is on the line and must be accomplished.

Pochettino - It's an important game

That is not overstating the game at White Hart Lane tonight. Apart from the fact there is a UEFA Champions League place at stake, but a trophy and a chance to give squad players and youngsters some first team football. Without European football we would struggle to keep everyone happy.

Mauricio Pochettino is not taking the game lightly as he told the clubs official website today.

"It’s a very important game for us and we need to be focused. It’s true we brought back a good result from the first leg but we need to win again.
"All games are different, and difficult. It’s important for us to follow our style and our system and try to win and not to think about the result in the first leg.
"So for me, it’s 0-0 and we need to try to win this game."

It seemed that some players took the first leg lightly, as did some fans. Winning is not a god given right, you still have to earn it even if you are the better side. The players in that game should have been out to impress and demonstrate they can thrive in they system if they want to stay at the club, as reportedly some of the players we are trying to shift do.

Tonight is a second chance, only a week after the first game so there is no excuse to say I'm not playing regularly, you are playing as mush as a Premier League player playing from one week to the next at the moment.

Spurs v AEL - My starting XI

10:30 am
A very important game tonight against AEL Limassol in the UEFA Europa League qualifying round that can not and should not be taken lightly.

Spurs v AEL - The last chance saloon

We saw again in the away leg what happens when you don't give teams the respect they deserve and are not mentally switched on to do a job, we did the same thing at Leeds United in the FA Cup in 2013 when we lost at their place.

You would think that for a few players this is their last chance to impress the manager in a game situation before the summer transfer window shuts. I know there is Liverpool to come but the players up for sale won't be playing in that game, unless they come on as a substitute, if they even make the 18 man squad.

The defence will need to be an area where we don't take risks. Hugo skippering in goal as per the first leg Kyle Naughton and Ben Davies. The centre-backs if we approach the game right should have an easy night so maybe new signing Federico Fazio can go straight onto the bench and have 15 mins at the end to introduce him if the game situation is right. He has had a full pre-season but if we don't want him on the bench yet then I'd bring in Milos Veljkovic to take his place.

Sandro is leaving so unlikely to figure I would think, Paulinho played and was rusty in the first game, presumably he'll be given another before we find out over the next few days whether he is staying, murmurs of a deal, possibly with Juventus in Italy. If that is the case and something has been arranged then he may not be seen as buying clubs don't want a player getting injured and neither do selling clubs for that matter.

The same really applies to Lewis Holtby, he is not a first choice selection so wants to go elsewhere to get game time. While he is being sounded out by interested parties no deal with Spurs has yet been discussed so I'd expect him to play. Should Paulinho not play then you either play Bentaleb again, but surely you want to rest him after playing every game, or you move Holtby back and bring in Christian Eriksen.

Another option would be to play Ryan Mason who has nobody down so far and this opposition isn't any stronger than anything else he has faced and leave Holtby attacking.

Tottenham are switched on this season

If he is not to be risked then Harry Kane would have to drop into the central three and Adebayor play up front. The three behind the striker are all playing for their future, neither Lennon nor Townsend want to leave but how much game time are they going to get?

Aaron Lennon is ahead of Townsend in the pecking order, we saw that at the weekend when he was on the bench and Townsend wasn't even in the 18 man squad. That may have been a little hint to Townsend to convince him he is a bit part player but with our squad you can't pick everyone.
