I can hear the 'Nice One Cyril' song ringing out in my head from my youthful days watching former left-back Cyril Knowles who was born on this day.

Our full-back would have been 71 today had his sadly not been cut short at the tender age of 47 in 1991. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour in February of that year and passed away on 30 August. RIP Cyril, thanks for the memories.

Former Spurs Development Squad defender 21-year-old  Kevin Stewart has signed a season-long loan deal at Swindon Town. The Enfield boen defender joined Liverpool after we released and now goes to a club with a strong recent link to Spurs. Last season he was sent out on loan to Cheltenham Town and Burton Albion, scoring the winning goal as Burton beat Cambridge 3-2 to secure promotion.

Spurs Development Squad player, 20-year-old Grant Ward, played for Rotherham United on Saturday in a pre-season friendly away to Stocksbridge Park Steels. The Lewisham born midfielder scored the second goal for them from range after 35 minutes in a 3-0 win.

That was his second goal in two pre-season friendlies and he has also impressed in training, so much so that Rotherham have now signed him on loan until January. Ward was on loan at Coventry City last season and sources in the Midlands say he was a major factor in the club securing their League One status. Coventry boss Tony Mowbray wanted to sign him again, but Ward preferred to step up to the Championship instead.

“I think disappointed would be the wrong word. Tottenham and Grant, like with all young players, are interested in developing his career. When you take loan signings you fully understand that and accept it moving forward. I think Grant did well enough for us to attract Championship sides and we wish him well.
“He did very, very well for us in his short spell. Of course we’d have liked to have had him back to help us but if his career is on an upward curve and he wants to take the step to the Championship then that might be of benefit to Grant’s development.”

He has pace, strength, athleticism, allied with good touch and vision. Rotherham play Alfreton tomorrow and he is expected to figure once again.

Tony Mowbray, who has held talks with Tottenham over player loans, has been casting an eye over a player we have released. Former Development Squad midfielder, Portuguese 20-year-old Ruben Lameiras, played as a trialist for Coventry City in their pre-season friendly at Nuneaton Borough on Saturday. He impressed in the 0-0 draw.

"He's been at Tottenham Hotspur and you can tell he has got natural ability and a bit of flair. I like his positive play and he's definitely worth keeping in the building and continuing to have a look at him."

Tony Mowbray was asked by BBC Coventry & Warwickshire about Lameiras and he felt his slight frame may be a problem.

"He's got a good pedigree, he's a very technical and talented player. The question's whether his physicality can cope with the division. You can see what type of footballer he is - he's a technician and can play in tight areas, but there are a lot of games in this league where it's very hurly-burly and 100 miles an hour - he's very slight but we're all impressed with his talent.
"If we did do anything with Ruben we'd have to pick our games. But there's no reason why he can't stay with us and we'll make a decision when we need to."
