Pundit for US TV gives his Spurs verdict

11:00 pm

ESPN football expert Craig Burley is asked to comment on the games each week across the pond in America and he has not always been complementary about Spurs. He is not one to give sympathy but tell it frankly how he sees it. Last week was a poor week for Spurs he felt, this week Spurs deserved credit for bouncing back.

For younger readers who may not know, Craig Burley is a television pundit and Scottish former professional footballer (46 national caps) who played as a midfielder from 1989 until 2004. He played in the Premier League for Chelsea and Derby County and in the Scottish Premier League for Celtic

"So Tottenham back to normal, Swansea back to normal, always good. Swansea are terrible but look, we battered, well I did, I battered Tottenham last week I think it was, for leaving players our of the ChampionsLeague, treating that competition like a tin pot then folding against Chelsea.
"So I got to credit them. This week has been a big week, Harry Kane has signed a new contract, long-term, Jan Vertonghen I believe signed a new contract as well. You've got Kane back in the goals like we know he can do, you've got Eriksen in the goals, Heung-min Son, whose played really well for them, in the goals.
"It was free flowing, yes it was a team who are bottom of the league, I get that, but you've still got to do it, you have still got to recover from that poor week, and it was a poor week no matter what anybody says, and they've done that.
"Does it mean they are going to go on and be challenging for the title? No I don't, I don't think it is, but they have got to give themselves an opportunity of getting in that top four or being knocking on the door and results like this will just help the confidence so I think it was a big, it was a big Saturday for Tottenham on the rebound. But, from the other side of the perspective, it was a shambles from Swansea."

One win away from Man City and Liverpool

4:30 am

Tottenham Hotspur made ground in the race for a top four slot with a commanding victory over Swansea at White Hart Lane, while rivals Liverpool and Manchester City suffered defeats. The weekend left Spurs three points adrift of the pair and 4 points behind Arsenal.

Spurs took the lead through a Harry Kane penalty after referee John Moss adjudged Dele Alli to have been fouled, which was a little harsh on Kyle Naughton, but we see these given regularly.

Pochettino will have been pleased to see his team add to the scoreline before half-time with Heung Min-Son lashing home a superb first-time hook volley giving ex-Arsenal keeper Fabianski no chance.

Son was once again involved shortly after the re-start. Kane started the move with a first-time ball to Eriksen, who played a first-time ball to dele Alli, who played a first-time ball into the path of the onrushing South Korean. When he turned back inside Kane was rushing forward and Son selflessly left the ball for Harry Kane to easily tuck home.

Swansea were woeful and their defending continued along those lines to allow Dele Alli a shot at goal which Fabianski saved. Unfortunately for Swansea, it looped up in the air into the path of a waiting Christain Eriksen who bundled the ball home from a yard.

tEriksen completed the five-goal rout with a fantastic finish following a drag back from substitute Moussa Sissoko which helped quieten supporters following the defeat to Chelsea.

We remain in 5th, but are now just one win away from the two sides above us and Manchester City only have a one goal better goal difference. They are without Sergio Aguero who picked up a four-game ban and Fernandinho who picked up a three-game ban so they could drop more points in the coming weeks, after their easy start to the season and the over reaction of our sheep mentality media.

Watch the individual performance of Son Heung-min and his fantastic volley to put us 2-0 up. The video shows his personal contribution to the game. These videos are useful to quickly analyse a players individual performance as opposed to trying to remember everything he did in a game.

He was involved in a lot and had one of his better games after perhaps a few lack lustre games while carrying an ankle injury.

Fans reacted on Twitter to Spurs bench

SPURS versus SWANSEA

Our substitute's bench today had fans in a pickle. It consisted of reserve goalkeeper Michel Vorm, Kevin Wimmer, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Josh Onomah and Georges-Kevin N'Koudou.

Ther was no place for Vincent Janssen who is sure to start at Wembley against CSKA Moscow in midweek to give Harry Kane a rest, nor Kieran Trippier as cover for either full-back, instead that role presumably falls to Kevin Wimmer.

It isn't the strongest of benches to inspire a fans confidence.

An even better second half, Kane 50 goals in 70 games

5:30 pm

SPURS 5 SWANSEA 0

The second half started with a shot from Harry Kane who scored two and had two disallowed for offside. he has got his fitness and is returning to top form, that is 7 goals in his last 6 Premier League games now.

He has scored 20 goals in 28 Premier League appearances in 2016, bettered only by Sergio Aguero with 27. In his last 70 Premier League games Kane has scored 50 goals. There can be no doubting his quality. Today was his 14th brace, only Aguero has more since Kane made his debut in April 2014 with 15.

The second half we had room in midfield in their half and we kept breaking quickly, not through speed of player as many as fan shouts for but the quicker speed of first time passing and movement. Again and again we ripped Swansea open with it and Kane's second goal was a prime example. He won the ball and started the move in our half and within a few passes, an excellent first-time ball from Alli in the move, was on hand when Son cut back inside to pass the ball into the net, 301 and game over.

What was pleasing was to see us try to score more goals and not just sit back as we did last season and accept a 2-0 victory. Swansea never had a chance because we kept them on the back foot, we didn't sit back and encourage them to get back into the game.

A far better Ist half

4:55 pm

SPURS 2 SWANSEA 0

It was certainly a better first half from Spurs. We played at a better tempo, played some neat one touch football and created opening where we didn't get a shot off and just needed that little bit extra time.

It was all one way with Swansea parking the bus and they should have been down to 10 men when Taylor cut Walker's head with his boot. It may not have been intentional, but he followed through with his foot and he simply can't have your studs head high. To not even book Taylor was simply absurd.

We started with Son cutting in onto hi right foot when in with a chance in the box, occasionally he needs to go to his left foot and shoot. We saw this in the first 15 minutes when we were playing the ball into the box far more than we have in other games. If the ball is in the area the opposition are under pressure and you never know what is going to happen. One moment of panic can lead to a goal.

We kept making Fabianski make saves, A Kane header, A Walker shot, an Eriksen free-kick. In other games we haven't been doing this. After 25 minutes we had had 5 shots on goal.

We then played Wanyama in and he passed to the keeper, Son had a chance and he leant back on the ball to send it over the bar. he was well played in by Danny Rose whose last third passing was hit and miss.

The pressure in the box paid off with a penalty harry Kane converted and then Son brilliantly demonstrated how to play a hook volley on 45 minutes.

Goals in the 2nd half at Spurs

2:24 pm

Swansea were involved in a nine-goal thriller last week that saw the game see-saw one way then the onther and back again. With Spurs sitting near the top of the table and playing at home gainst a team low down in the table you would think there would be a likelihood of plenty of goals.

History and statistics tell us a different story. The Racing Post inform us that over the last 20 seasons teams involved in a nine-goal game have seen only 2.59 goals in their next Premier League encounter.

They also tell us that in the seven and a half years Tottenham have been challenging for a UEFA Champions League place that1.5 goals in the second half of our games has occurred 56% of the time.

Given that many sides try to keep it to 0-0 at half-time and then attempt to win the game in the second half, perhaps we will see more goals in the second 45 minutes than the first today.

Spurs versus Swansea

12:30 pm

Amazing isn't it, the Tottenham Hotspur versus Swansea City game is being shown in 140 countries around the world and England is not one of them!

The Premier League prevent that, quite why I don't know, the crowd are still going to turn up to support the team. Internet viewing is the future of the sport and a future income source, still we get a rather decent income from broadcasting rights as it is.

Today we play Swansea City in a game where we need three points while we wait for the full first team to play together and hopefully go on a run. One loss in 13 Premier League games is not a bad platform to build from. The Chelsea game was only our 4th defeat in 26 away Premier League games so no scapegoats are required.

It will be good to see Toby Alderweireld back, but we need to see Erik Lamela back as his hip injury just seems to have gone on and on without any sign of it coming to an end it seems. We need him, unless some others are going to start to step up to the plate, which isn't happening enough at the moment.

Owen and merson have their say

5:00 pm

SPURS vs SWANSEA CITY

Former England, Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Michael Owen writing for Bet Victor tips a Tottenham victory on Saturday at White Hart Lane. He highlights Swansea's defensive weakness which has been their Achilles heel all season.

“The Swans might have picked up a valuable three points against Palace last weekend but some of their own defensive work was poor and I expect Spurs to bounce back after losing their unbeaten PL record at Stamford Bridge last weekend.”

Former England and Arsenal striker Paul Merson has his say on the upcoming Spurs fixture this weekend and feels the Swansea defence is still all at sea just waiting for Spurs to capitalise on it.

“Every time there was a corner or free-kick the referee should have just given a goal. It was a shambles of a match. It was entertaining but to think that Swansea have turned a corner would be madness.
“I’ve got to go with Tottenham here. For 44 minutes against Chelsea they were phenomenal. However, they’ve only won one of their last 10 games – that’s a bit of a worry. That said, this looks a very winnable match.”

Another victory for mentality and belief

7:30 pm
Another victory for mentality and belief, another victory for never giving in, another victory for positivity and another victory for the team.

The beautiful thing about our play when we were behind is that we continue to play as a team, the players don't panic and try to do it all themselves. That is the route to being unlucky, continuing to believe in the team ethic is seeing us through these tough times.

Everyone played their part and our full-backs showed once again how important they are. Danny Rose showed he has a little more composure than Ben Davies in front of goal. When Davies had his sterling game his best chance he shot wide only for a deflection. They both have their qualities, we have four full-backs we can rely on.

Pochettino shows belief in his side. When we were 2-1 up and wanting to close out the game he has no qualms about bringing on an 18-year-old just starting to make his way in the game. This wasn't just any game, it was a game to keep us hot on the heels of Leicester City, a game where we wanted to keep the pressure up.

If you remember back to the pre-season games, he was throwing on youngsters to see out the games. He is doing the same with Josh Onomah now. He puts faith in players and our fans have had to get used to the idea that we can achieve success without a Chelsea chequebook.

We haven't won anything yet, but if any fans believes we haven't improved when we have more points at this stage of the season than at any time during the Premier League they are twisting reality, presumably in an attempt to support an outdated Levy out call.

West Ham next, not an easy game, but then none of them are now. We will certainly be motivated for the next two fixtures, that is a certainty.

Great character from the lads today. We will never give in. Fans were great cheering us on too! Big week.

Great way to head into a big week. Was a brilliant response to going behind, fans drove us on

Winning does feel good ;)

Mauricio: "It was maybe one of our best performances. We showed great character."

A joy to be Spurs fan at work on Monday

5:04 pm
After Leicester City grabbed a late goal to destroy the joys of Saturday, Swansea City did the best to destroy Sunday.

Once again though the boys believed and fought back from a goal down at the interval to score two in the second half. We had several breakaways but as is common we messed them up. This is an aspect of our play that we must improve, we must become even more clinical.

There were aspects we can improve upon, Eric Dier had a spell where he played a succession of poor balls and Danny Rose was left on his own at times. Still we were powering shots down on their goal in an effort to make Fabianski look good and he kept us at bay until the 69th minute.

With Arsenal losing to Manchester United we now sit three points above them with a better goal difference and just 2 points off Leicester City. The relief among the players was palpable, but we have to be careful not to get complacent and think we have won in moments where we turn a game around. I had concerns there would be a lack of concentration after the goal, such was the celebrating.

The game was not won and sure enough, we were in grave danger right after their goal, unsurprisingly down our left. Swansea had joy down that side all afternoon, frequently having time and space, indeed, their goal came from our left and Lloris's superb save in the first half was from down our left.

It's another Monday morning to feel good about being a Tottenham fan and celebrating the club that the chairman and the coach are building together.
