Real Madrid scouting ex-Spurs academy player Yuri Berchiche

2:30 pm

Yuri Berchiche Izeta is a Spanish footballer who plays for Real Sociedad as a left back. Previously the 27-year-old (28 next February) was at Tottenham Hotspur when he joined us on 8 June 2007 to learn in our academy.

He was named player of the tournament at the Eurofootb Tournament in Belgium while playing for our Under-18 side who won the tournament after defeating Anderlecht in the final 4-0.

We sent him on loan to Cheltenham Town on 26 March 2009, then in July of the same year on another loan to Real Vallodolid back in Spain.

We released him at the end of the 2010 season and he joined Real Union in the Spanish third tier. Two years later he joined Real Sociedad who loaned him to third tier side SD Eibar. In 2014 he began training with and became part of the first team squad and now he is being scouted by none other than Real Madrid.

He has come a long way and has had a journey that shows you should never give up.

Real Madrid are after Yuri (former player) and Aaron Caricol, from Real Sociedad & Espanyol respectively, to replace Coentrao.

Spurs Taking A Close Look At 18yo Central Midfielder

Spurs taking a close look at 18yp central midfielder

The NextGen Series this weekend, 14th-16th May, sees the Under-19 sides of Eredivisie champions PSV, runners-up Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Turkish side Galatasaray, South African side Ajax Cape Town, Spanish giants Barcelona, ASA United FC of the national Capital Soccer League, Washington USA and African football academy Right To Dream.

Tottenham are in Group B with PSV, Ajax Cape Town and Right To Dream.

Ipswich Town finished seventh in the Championship this season and missed out on the play-offs for the Premier League. That may have a bearing on18-year-old (19 in October)  Kundai Benyu being named in the Tottenham squad for the NextGen series.

The highly-rated teenager signed aa new two-and-a-half-year r contract at the beginning of last year so has one year remaining. The English central midfielder has been training and travelling with the first-team squad while progressing with their Under-21 side.

Clearly this tournament is an opportunity for us to look at him at close quarters. One for the future? We'll have to wait and see.

Academy products

10:00 pm
The aim for Tottenham is to create a conveyor belt of talent that minimises the loss felt if a player leaves. We need to put the best in one end and keep the creme de la creme while selling others to pay for the academy.

That is the formula Real Madrid and Barcelona use, their academies have to pay for themselves, that has to be how we run ours. Fans get attached to players and assume as one has made it almost all will if you just throw them in. You see crazy calls for Onomah, Clouthirst when he was here and others to play when they are not ready. In some cases they never will be.

Dele Alli and a youthful side is an attraction for young players, there is no doubt about that. I have no doubt at all that berahino has been behaving as he has because he wanted to come to Tottenham and sees his career being possibly held back by WBA. If we buy another striker, as I'm told by an ex-Fulham player and an agent that we have, then it may be that he has lost the opportunity of joining us, a potential title winning team.

I'm sorry but joining Newcastle just isn't the same thing for your career. Life throws opportunities at you and it is up to you to recognise them and take them when they come along. I'm sure he did and wanted to, wants to.

Tottenham Academy have produced a list of former academy products now playing football elsewhere. The number is a testament to the coaches training the youngsters. There are four at Premier League clubs, one in Spain, one in Germany, one in Italy, one in Belgium, one in North America, one in Romania, one in Scotland, eleven in the Championship, eleven in League One and nine in League Two, that's 42 players in total.

All academy products now playing elsewhere in England's top four divisions or other major foreign leagues.

Another academy product, Alex Pritchard, is coming back to fitness, he is thought to be in contention for selection in about two weeks.

Josh Onomah is coming through and Tom Carroll has been getting starts recently, he'll probably be playing next week in the FA Cup against Colchester United.
