Coulthirst returns to Spurs

8:30 am
Young on loan striker shaquile Coulthirst has left Wigan Athletic and returned to Spurs, but no as cover for Harry Kane.

The instant thought is that Spurs may be having trouble bringing in a new striker and have recalled Coulthirst as third choice, but that does not appear to be the case. Coulthirst has a thigh injury and has returned to Spurs for treatment, although it is not known whether he will return to Wigan after his recovery at this stage.

He has only been at Wigan 11 days playing in games against Doncaster and Scunthorpe before missing the away loss to Kent side Gillingham, who incidentally have only lost 5 games in 22 under former Tottenham left-back Justin Edinburgh who took over from former Tottenham winger Peter Taylor mid way through last season.

Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is keen to have him back and would like to keep him longer, his loan spell was due to end in November.

“He’s had a bad tear of his thigh. The physios have been liaising with each other and he’s gone back there to start his rehab and see how it goes. Hopefully he comes back quick and we can get him back but we just have to wait and see and keep in contact with him.
“It’d be great [to have him back]. “I think he showed in the little burst he had he was somebody with real ability, pace and a real energy when he came on the pitch. I thought he really lifted the team on both occasions with his energy. It was a blow after the Scunthorpe game.
“He obviously finished the game and we didn’t think there was anything that bad so it was a blow the next day to find out how bad the tear was.”

Striker Shaquile Couthirst is on loan in League Two at Southend United for a season and was involved at the weekend when they lost at home to Morcambe 0-1.

The 20-year-old striker had a header saved from close range, a right foot shot that went just wide and produced a cross from the right-hand side of the box that Southend really should have scored from. Somehow though that chance went past the post as well. So far he has scored 2 goals in 10 appearances for Southend.

Last season he played 2 games for Leyton Orient when on loan in League One for a month and scored 1 goal, then had 5 League Two matches at Torquay United where he scored 2 goals. All 5 clubs that he played against wanted to sign him on loan but Southend eventually secured his signature.
