Happy Birthday Micky Hazard

4:30 pm
Today, February 5th is the birthday of one of my favourite players when growing up, when shorts were short, the unsung Micky Hazard, who is 55 today, still young at heart I'm sure Micky.

He was unfortunate to be around at the same time as Glenn Hoddle but had skill of his own that watch a delight to watch in the days when you could turn up at the stadium and buy a ticket.

Back in 2013 Hazard echoed the words of the great Danny Blanchflower when he said the game always is, always will be, or should be about the glory.  Blanchflower if you remember came out with the immortal line;

"The game is about glory. It’s about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."

Hazard signed a contract and made his League debut for us in a 3–0 victory over Everton on 19 April 1980, then aged a sprightly 20. he went on to live every boys dream by winning the FA Cup at Wembley and added a European trophy for good measure. The one blot was a runners-up medal in the League Cup of 1982 when we lost to Liverpool after extra-time.

While with Spurs he won won the 1982 FA Cup beating QPR in the final, which required defeating Arsenal, Leeds United, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Leicester City to get there.

Hazard also picked up the UEFA Cup in 1984 (now the Europa League) and had a hand in goal of both legs of the final against the holders, Belgian side Anderlecht. It was a MIcky Hazard free-kick against then Yugoslavian side (now Croatia) Hajduk Split in the second leg of the semi-final (2-1 down from 1st Leg) that got us to the final.

Both legs finished 1-1 with goals from Paul Miller and skipper Graham Roberts, the crosses supplied by Hazard. We won the penalty shoot-out 4-2 (Roberts, Falcao, Stevens, Archibald) to lift the trophy.
