Tottenham Hotspur's Real Problem: Fans Who Fear the Rebuild They Wanted

The Fragile Mentality Killing Tottenham’s Rebuild – And Why It Has to Change |
Tottenham Hotspur’s Real Problem Isn’t Levy or Ange – It’s the Fans Who Fear the Rebuild They Asked For
The Comment That Proved My Point Better Than I Ever Could
In response to my article Ange Was Right: The Problem at Spurs Is Mentality, a reader left the following comment:
"So when Levy sacks Ange at the end of the season it means he has a loser mentality according to your thinking. What you have is blind faith, Newcastle haven’t breached rules and are operating with far less revenue so them being backed by a state is meaningless."
I'll explain this for the reader and his fellow negative mindsets.
Because...
Ironically...
This comment does exactly what the article was about...
It proves my point.
It’s not just about disagreeing.
It’s about the mentality behind the disagreement.
This is what happens when someone is so unwilling to entertain an idea that doesn’t fit their preloaded opinion...
They tie themselves in knots.
A losing mentality can’t see what a winning mentality sees.
They can’t.
It’s impossible...
Because a losing mentality doesn’t even know...
What the components of a winning mentality are.
They don't know the mindset...
Because they haven't experienced it.
It's like a bloke trying to tell a woman what it's like to give birth!
"You can’t critique a mindset you’ve never lived!"
As Ange said…
“Everyone goes out to win, so a winning mentality has to be more than that.”
I'll break this comment down and expose the problem...
Not just with this argument...
But with the culture it represents.
⚖️ “So if Levy sacks Ange... he has a loser mentality?”
This misunderstands the point entirely.
I haven’t said Levy has a loser mentality.
In fact, Levy’s greatest strength has been his long-term vision...
Building infrastructure...
Securing the stadium deal...
Keeping the club solvent when others are walking into financial traps.
The guy saw how football was changing...
And positioned Tottenham Hotspur to be an elite club...
In a sustainable way...
A self-sufficient way...
Not reliant on Sugar Daddies forever searching for legal loopholes.
If Ange were to be sacked...
And I don’t believe that’s Levy’s ideal plan...
It would more likely be a reaction to fan pressure...
Not his own footballing judgment.
Many managers depart because the players stop playing for them...
They stop believing...
And as we have already established...
If you don't believe in something...
You can't achieve it.
Mourinho and Conte were cases in point...
The players had them removed.
Chelsea players did the same to Mourinho, finishing 10th...
Then challenged for the title the following season.
Levy doesn’t operate like a fan.
Nor should he.
That’s part of what has kept this club stable in a world of financial chaos.
So no...
If Ange is removed...
The loser mentality won't be coming from the chairman’s office.
It'll be coming from the online crowd...
Who can’t stomach the pain of a rebuild...
They claimed they wanted...
And they knocked the chairman for not giving them!

Tottenham Hotspur’s Long-Term Plan Is Working – But the Fans Are Sabotaging It |
🧱 “Blind faith”
This is a lazy way to dismiss any belief that doesn’t match your own.
What I’ve written isn’t blind faith...
It’s called strategic patience.
You don’t rebuild a broken culture in 21 months.
Especially not when you’re doing it within the rules...
Without state wealth...
And with a squad still adapting to a new identity...
And a fanbase stuck in a losing mindset...
That spews a garage of hatred all week...
That young impressionable players are subjected to.
That alone is a massive hurdle this reader clearly doesn't understand.

Spurs fans are creating a Warzone of Negativity to shoot themselves in the foot |
Creating a Warzone of Negativity on social media... (all links open in a new window)
Does the reader seriously think that toxicity helps bring success faster?
That's just lying to yourself.
Science has proven it takes 7 years on average for a new owner.
Our stadium is our new owner...
Effectively...
And we haven't hit the 7-year mark yet...
Even with a pandemic having an impact...
Ans a financial recovery period after...
That no other club had to go through...
To the same extent.
What Postecoglou is doing is a root-and-branch transformation.
Identity first.
Trophies second.
Because unless you change the mentality...
The trophies don’t come...
Or if they do, they don’t stick.
We want sustained success...
Not a one-off success.
That’s how it works in real sport...
Not FIFA Career Mode.
So no, it’s not blind.
It’s informed belief...
Built on recognising what long-term success actually takes.
💸 “Newcastle haven’t breached rules... so state backing is meaningless”
This is the point where the argument collapses entirely.
Yes, Newcastle haven’t officially breached Premier League rules.
But they are, very clearly, running at a loss...
Just like Chelsea...
Who are under UEFA investigation...
And Aston Villa...
And Nottingham Forest...
Who are also walking a financial tightrope.
Football financial expert Stefan Borson remarked on talkSPORT that these clubs clearly are prepared to accept fines...
So no they are not playing by the rules!
Newcastle United’s ability to do that safely doesn’t come from magical business acumen.
It comes from state wealth...
Backing from a sovereign fund that doesn’t care about profit because it’s not in football for business reasons.
It's in football to clense it's countries image.
It’s in it for political leverage and soft power.
To say that ownership model is “meaningless” because they haven’t been punished yet is stunningly naive.
If ENIC had that kind of backing, they could do the same.
But they don’t.
They’re a private investment firm.
That means they have to operate sustainably...
Which, by the way...
Is what most people used to say they wanted: a club that grows properly, not one that cheats the system.
So if state backing is meaningless, then ENIC should be just as aggressive — right?
Except we all know they can’t be.
Because ownership structure does matter.
You can’t have it both ways.
Besides, as Daniel Levy has pointed out £700m net has been spent...
3rd highest in the league since Covid.
The club have and are building a squad for the next 7-10 years...
To grow in the same way the Pochettino squad grew together.
🤯 The Real Issue: You Asked for This Rebuild
Let’s be honest.
This same section of fans begged for a rebuild.
They moaned about pragmatism.
They rejected managers who didn’t play “the Spurs way.”
They said we’d rather build something special than nick a Carabao Cup under Mourinho or Conte.
Well — this is the rebuild.
It’s not comfortable.
It’s not easy.
Because winning isn’t meant to be.
What Ange is doing is changing the entire operating system...
And yes...
Sometimes it crashes along the way.
But he’s doing it without the shortcuts other clubs are taking.
And now...
The same fans who cried out for something different are crying again...
Because it’s not perfect yet.
This is what a fragile mentality looks like.
And that’s why Postecoglou’s message is so important.
The club have to stick to something.
All fans stick to is complaining...
Which helps perpetuate failure...
As payers mentalities can't overcome it at the final hurdle.
6 finals and a Premier League runners-up under Daniel Levy...
All while building the club.
Had the club stayed where it was it wouldn't be anywhere near trophies.
🧠 Final Thought: It’s Not About Levy or Ange — It’s About Us
![]() |
It’s Not About Levy or Ange - it's about the fans |
This isn’t about blindly backing any one man.
It’s about backing a process — a real process — over time.
Tottenham Hotspur have tried the quick fixes.
We’ve tried the “just win a trophy” route.
We’ve tried the managers who say “you are who you are” instead of trying to make us something better.
Now we’re trying to build something that actually lasts.
And the most dangerous threat to it?
It’s not Daniel Levy.
It’s not even the opposition.
It’s the short-term, reactionary mindset that infects parts of this fanbase...
The ones who tear it down before it’s even built.
So thank you to the commenter.
You didn’t undermine the article.
You made it stronger.
Because nothing proves the point more clearly, than someone proving it mid-comment...
Unaware they’ve just handed you the mic.
“The biggest threat to Tottenham Hotspur isn’t failure... it’s fans who fear the process of winning more than they fear losing.”
🟡 If you still believe in what this club could become, then don’t add to the noise. Add to the structure.
Share this post — and let’s be the fanbase that finally has the mentality to match our ambition.

I thought the idea of being a supporter of a club is that we work together to do whatever it takes - or what we can of that at least - in order to advance the cause of the club or team.

To paraphrase JFK:
"Ask not what your club can do for you; rather ask what you can do for your club". If your honest answer to that is just to bitch & moan then I suspect your interest in Spurs is all about what you get from being associated. That translates into English as just useless.

IF they find anything then they will put together a fully-supported case for change. This takes a great deal of effort and double-checking they themselves have made no mistakes. Then, and in parallel with whatever they do with their plan, they take the only viable default position which is to put everything they have behind the current setup. Disagreement does *NOT* provide any excuse for lack of ostentatious support. Ever.

Out of interest, what's your response to a disappointing loss such as we had at Wolves?
