Youth development high on the agenda

11:00 am
Regular readers will know I have for some time now suggested we need a tie up with at least one side on the continent, a Dutch or Belgian club would not be far away or even a side in Spain where money is tight.

Players develop abroad quicker because sides with less money are forced to play them at a younger age where they quickly learn to fight for a place. Chelsea have a deal with Vitesse Arnham and have sent 5 players there on loan. The Chelsea model is to buy players, loan them out to be further developed until such time as they are good enough to play for the club or to sell them if they are deemed surplus to requirements. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and striker Romelu Lukaku show this in action.

We tried to get a deal with Roda JC before but they felt there was not enough benefit in the deal for them but 2 years down the line and with a new technical advisor recently appointed, Ton Caanen, a deal between the two clubs has now been struck report Voetbal International.

They report that officials came over last Saturday to discuss the deal and Caanen explained he was to be the link man between the clubs.

"I made clear in England Roda now has a completely new leadership who does want to pick up seriously. In recent months we have had plenty of contact, Tottenham have indicated that it is important that I would get a role in a partnership. That is a fact. Tottenham often lends players to clubs from the lower English divisions, but they also want to have a structured line to the continent.
"The collaboration with Roda is now taking off. First, in technical terms, but in the future there are interesting opportunities in areas such as youth development. It's my job to monitor the process, regularly go to England to maintain contacts and to identify possible reinforcements for Roda map. It would be good in January, a first player to come here. All of course in consultation with our scouts and technical staff."

This is excellent news, another step to developing a structure whereby we can buy the best young players in the world, then develop them faster than the traditional slow British method. It augurs well and should help us to create a conveyor belt of talent, which is the aim. Tom Carroll should have gone to Afax when Christian Eriksen came to Tottenham, he made a mistake in turning them down which hindered his development. This deal should help to make sure that mistake isn't repeated.

Youth development is the key to a sustainable future not dependent upon the sugar daddy a few cry for. Ut does seem as if Spurs have turned a corner and are really getting the club on a far more serious and professional footing, acting in a way a top club should act. Piece by piece the future is being built.

“This announcement will ensure that we continue to provide an unrivalled service to the club and its supporters for years to come.”

This is how they describe Tottenham on their website, thomascooksport, com:

"The White Hart Lane pitch has been home to some of the most exciting football in England. Tottenham Hotspur are famed for their crisp attacking verve, passed down from the likes of Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles and David Ginola; something that the current crop under manager Mauricio Pochettino hope to emulate."

There will be a lot of happy Spurs fans if they do.
