We seem so often to play not to lose rather than to win, not very successfully.

Selection Conundrum

8:33 am
No Tottenham fan needs reminding who we are playing today or the length of the trip, you have heard that countless time on other sites. The lack of recovery time, it takes the body 48 hours to fully recover from playing a football match, which isn't aided by travelling, is a concern given who we are playing. Just like before the League Cup Final Chelsea get more recovery time that us.

For the cup final Chelsea had over a week to prepare. Their players were fully recovered by Monday lunchtime for a Sunday kick-off. Spurs players played away on the Thursday evening and weren't fully recovered until Saturday night. With no time to prepare for the game, no time to work on tactics, there was a massive advantage for Chelsea which they took advantage of. That isn't an excuse, it is simply a fact, this time Chelsea played on Tuesday and we play on Thursday.

Moving on to Qarabag, they have won one of their last five home European ties and lost one. They have scored two goals and let in three goals, keeping three clean sheets. Tottenham have also won only one of the last five away fixtures in Europe. We have lost three, scoring seven and let in four.

Over a longer period, the last 20 European away games has seen us keep 7 clean sheets. We have won 6 and drawn 8 of them, which means 6 losses. Our win rate is just 1 in 4. Clearly we can not take the opposition for granted, we can not just assume we will win, as many a fan tends to so. The team will still have to have some strength to it and a second XI rarely performs as the first XI do, we have seen that again and again in Europe.

We have to rest players for Chelsea so it is no surprise to see Walker, Rose and Dembele not travelling, clearly they will be playing Sunday. Dele Alli is suspended for the Chelsea game so that his travelling isn't an issue.

We have to take a professional approach to the game. Qarabag do not score many goals in Europe so if we keep it tight we may be able to keep a clean sheet. Do we play conservatively and nick a goal or do we try to go ahead early. I'm sure Pochettino would like the game won quickly and then an energy saving performance to secure the win with the Chelsea game in mind.
Possible Pochettino XI
Trippier Alderweireld Vertonghen Davies
Dier Alli
Townsend Mason Eriksen

I'd be resting Harry Kane and giving Clinton Njie a game. Dele Alli and Mason could change positions or Eriksen could remain on the bench for Njie. Selection revolves around Kane, Eriksen and Son, all of whom one would expect to play against Chelsea so their game time needs to be managed to an hour is possible.

Important Europa League game

8:30 pm
Tottenham Hotspur F.C.
UEFA Europa League Group Stage
Thursday, 26 November, 18:00
Tofiq Bahramov Stadium
Qarabag FK

The next game up is a 4,938 mile round trip to the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku to take on Qarabag who gave us some initial problems at White Hart Lane. Quite apart from the journey we have to remember that Chelsea await us at the weekend so it wouldn't be ideal to send the entire first team.

This is a game for Andros Townsend to be reintroduced and have his say. If he isn't motivated for this game he will never be and a sale a certainty. Clinton Njie has just recovered from injury so will need some game time, Dele Alli is suspended, Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier will come in for Rose and Walker.

Do we leave Lloris at home after all the troubles in France and give Vorm an outing, do we continue to pay Alderweireld and Vertonghen every minute or give this game over to Fazio and Wimmer? Then there is Tom Carroll to consider, giving Josh Onomah another cameo, perhaps Harry Winks as well. It may be an idea to leave Eriksen at home and play Lamela instead.

Mauricio Pochettino has tended to play strong sides this season

Qarabag sit top of the Premyer Liqa having won their last four games scoring seven goals and conceding none. After 13 games, they are 9 points clear at the top having won 10 and drawn 2. They have netted 24 times and conceded just 8. Their striker Richard, a Brazilian, heads the league scoring charts with 6, three of which have been penalties while Swedish attacker Samuel Armenteros has 4.

As you can see from the group table below the avoidable loss to Anderlecht has compressed the table at a time when we didn't really need it. We have to ensure we avoid defeat or secure victory, usually playing away in Europe we draw though. Selection will not be easy for this game with Chelsea in mind, remembering that the body takes 48 hours to fully recover, which won't be helped by a plane flight.

In this round of games Monaco are at home to Anderlecht and in the nxt round we have to play Monaco at White Hart Lane. We don't really want to go into that game needing points so doing a professional job is important on Thursday.

This game is an ideal opportunity for a few of the squad players to show their worth. The pressure will be on and they will have to be able to handle that to show Pochettino they can be trusted to produce.

Lamela off the ball, a case for optimism

5:00 pm
Erik Lamela had an up and down game, but there were pleasing and encouraging aspects, one of which was highlighted during the build-up to the second goal by Son Heung-min.

While everyone is focussing on Dele Alli, his run and the run of Son to link up well together, the other player prominent in this video is Erik Lamela. Forget the ball for a moment, take a look at the off the ball running of Lamela.

He is looking to run beyond the man with the ball, but more than that he doesn't just run anywhere into the box as so many players do, when Alli gets the ball he is looking to go central, where a striker would be. If you recall he was through on goal central and miss controlled the ball in the first half, he was through centrally when he took the ball off Alli and hit the post before finally scoring from a central position.

The justified main criticism against him is that he has had no goal threat, 7 assists is great but if that isn't backed up with 10 goals there are other players who can do better. This was not Premier League opposition and he had plenty of space, but he was looking to get into more dangerous positions than he did last season.

If that trend continues then he is giving himself a chance of turning the corner in his Tottenham career. he will have had help and advice from Mauricio Pochettino of course, but he still has to put things into practice so had he made a conscious decision to put himself in positions here he can fail, in goalscoring opportunities?

His misses a glorious chance, but he didn't hide, he kept putting himself in a position to score or miss, that may mean there is a greater determination within him this season. It is early days and I'm not going to go overboard yet, he still has a lot to do to prove himself a top four player, let alone the talent we thought we had bought.

Fair play though, where Vlad Chiriches never looked like putting in a decent performance, Paulinho rarely looked bothered enough to do so, Lamela is giving us cause for optimism, tempered optimism at this stage.

Individual Highlights Video - Son Heung-min

12:30 pm
Two goal hero Son Heung-min will have settled any nerves with a two goal performance to alleviate supporters fears that we may not have enough goal threat.

While the first was an easy poachers goal, he was in the right place at the right time and for the second he linked well with Dele Alli before finishing with composure. No hard luck story, no unlucky to have hit a defender or blocked by a keeper, he tucked it away.

That is just the sort of clinical finishing I have been talking about for the last couple of years. Compare that with the 4 Lamela attmpts fpor one goal, or Ryan Mason having scord 1 out of 4 one-on-one attempts with the keeper or Dele Alli missing his one -on-one, being clinical is the difference. It is somethng we as a club have to master in a better way then we are now and thta won't happen if the players feel it doesn't matter if we win, it does.

Everything you do is training and practice for next time, mentally you are training yourself that you expect to score. Have that attitude and you'll do better than the player who hopes to score, continually missing puts doubts in your head, doubts you don't need there.

VIDEO: Pochettino post game press conference

11:37 am
Mauricio Pochettino was pleased after the game with so many players playing their first competitive game for the club, as he points out it is different from training. When training you have to impress to get into the team, but once you are in you have to overcome nerves and put everything into practice from the training ground.

Some are more mentally attuned to do that than others, Son scored two goals and possibly helped to allay some supporters who fear Harry Kane is our only goalscorer or striker, that isn't the case. It is essential though that all four attacking players carry a goal threat and score goals which is why Lamela continually putting himself in goalscoring positions was perhaps the most pleasing aspect of his game last night.

HIGHLIGHTS VIDEO - Trippier and the impact of nerves

10:51 am
For those of you who missed the game or indeed want to see some of the skill on show again the highlights video at the foot of the post gives nice close-up coverage.

It begins with Trippier and his introduction to the Tottenham crowd by giving away a clear cut penalty. It demonstrates that players have nerves, coming to a new club with expectation, supporters just assume a player will simply reproduce what they have done elsewhere in a different system, but they have to adapt. Nerves are a good thing if you channel them into improving your performance.

One of my best bowling performances I recall was against a quality side on a boiling hot day when I looked at my team and saw we hardly had any bowlers, if I didn't succeed we were in trouble, it is the most nervous I have ever felt, butterflies in the stomach. I bowled more over in that game than in any other, conceded few runs and took wickets.

You can either wilt with nerves, as you often see people do in a Cup Final, or channel them and let them help you perform better. Trippier made a rash decision and he had to show character to come back from that, which augers well for the future.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Qarabağ of Azerbaijan is the first Group J game of the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League campaign. We have lost just one of our last 17 European fixtures (W12 D4 L1) at White Hart Lane and will be looking to enhance that record.

This is a first meeting in European competition between sides from England and Azerbaijan, although Qarabağ have played Northern Ireland side Portadown (won 2-1 2010/11 UEFA Europa League) and Celtic (lost 1-0 2015/16 UEFA Champions League Qualifying Round).

Last season Qarabağ beat Dnipro away and they went on the contest the final so the Azerbaijan side will be no pushovers.
