Kane hopes to beat Defoe's record one day

10:30 am
Harry Kane was one of the pluses on Thursday night showing the right attitude towards the game and being a constant threat to AEL.

Kane hopes to beat Defoe's record one day

His grew in confidence last season and was eased into the team by Tim Sherwood, taking his chance with both hands. He has continued in the same vein at the beginning of this season, grabbing pre-season goals, setting up the winner against West Ham in the Premier League in Saturday and now grabbing the winner against AEL Limassol in the UEFA Europa League.

Players like Harry Kane and Nabil Bentaleb add a youthful enthusiasm, drive and attitude to do well in every game that can only benefit the older hands. Spurs TV, in the shape of Nabil Bentaleb, caught up with him after the game and asked him how it felt to score the winner for the team.

"It always feels good to score. I just remember Erik running with the ball, I made a run, he put it through, I took a touch and took a nice toe poke into the roof of the net but as a strikers finish very happy.
"The team worked hard, the team worked very hard today to come away with that result. It was well deserved, they put up a tough test but we came away winners and that's what we came here to do.

Jermain Defoe is the record goalscorer for Tottenham in European competition, the fifth highest goalscorer for Tottenham, the highest goalscorer at White Hart Lane, the 14th highest goalscorer in the Premier League and was the 20th player to score 100 Premier League goals.

He was offered £90,000 a week by Toronto and couldn't turn that down at his age so his old number 18 shirt had to find a new owner. That owner is now Harry Kane who hopes he can surpass Defoe's European record one day.

"It is obviously a great number, it's a legendary number at the club, it great to take it over from Jermain Defoe. I was able to score a goal here and maybe if I can continue that and maybe take his goalscoring record in Europe one day.
"They were good, they had good individual players and they played as a team. They got the goal early on and made it tough for us but we had to be patient and we knew if we kept moving the ball and switching it chances would come. We were able to take a couple towards the end of the second half.
"Their keeper played well and made some great saves, a few from me. As a striker you have to just keep going and keep thinking the next chance is going to be a goal. It was the fourth or fifth chance I got there today and I was able to put it in the back of the net and that's what counts at the end of the day.
"Any away game in Europe is going to be tough and like I say they made it tough for us but to come away with the win is what we came here to do and we are pleased."

Being young not every game is going to be brilliant but Kane is now making significant contributions on a regular basis so the future bodes well for hi. The security of a 5-year-contract and a manager that tried to take him to his previous club are all positives for the 21-year-old England Under 21 international, for whom he has 3 goals in 5 games.

Davies - It wasn't easy

6:30 pm
Ben Davies, our summer signing from Swansea, got his first competitive start for Tottenham against AEL Limassol in the heat and humidity of Cyprus last night.

Davies - It wasn't easy

He spoke to the Spurs TV guys after the game and was delighted to have a game under his belt, accepted the side weren't at their best but delighted to have turned the game around.

"Yeah it was tough, it took some time to adapt to the heat and humidity but finally in the end, it was a little bit scrappy, but we got the job done.
"Yes it was good to tun it around, we knew we were far from our best. The goal we conceded was just a mistake by one if us not really down to them threatening us that much so it was disappointing to concede that early goal. I thought we kept them at bay throughout the whole game really and only chances were long range shots but it was nice to turn it around in the end and get the win.
"It was nice to watch them [two goals] at the back to see them go into the back of the net with all the opportunities we had. It was nice to see them go in.
"It's great to get that first one [competitive game] out the way and hopefully I can get many more this season. It's a great feeling to get the first competitive one out there and like I said hopefully some more to come.
"I was more excited than nervous out there but when that first whistle went you forget about all that and get into the game."

It wasn't an easy debut for Davies, the Cypriots playing the ball in behind him and the onrushing forward had to be thwarted by Lloris smothering the chance 12 yards from goal. That was reminiscent of Rose last season getting too far adrift of the centre-back.

Spurs were rattled in the first half and the defence you would say muddled through without looking totally secure. Balls inside the full-backs were dangerous on both sides, they are difficult to defend against if
played right.

Lloris and the kids

4:30 pm
Hugo Lloris wore the captains arm band again for our UEFA Europa League tie against AEL Limassol in Cyprus on Thursday, a tie we made hard work of before winning 2-1.

Lloris and the kids

A quick look at the photo above and you start to realise what a young side we had ut. The front row is Andros Townsend (England) 23, Lewis Holtby (Germany) 23, Ben Davies (Wales) 21, Kyle Naughton (England) 25 and the old man at the end unable to get all that way down, Roberto Soldado (Spain) 29.

In the back row Eric Dier (England) 20, Paulinho (Brazil) 26, Hugo Lloris (France) 27, Harry Kane (England) 21, Nabil Bentaleb (Algeria) 19 and Jan Vertonghen (Belgium) 27.

The subs we used were Nacer Chadli (Belgium) 25, Mousa Dembele (Belgium) 27 and Erik Lamela (Argentina) 22.

Four Englishmen, three Belgians, one Welshman, one German, one Spaniard, one Braziian, one Fenchman, one Algerian and one Argentinian, half the players used 23 or less.

The two players who stood out in the game were Harry Kane and Erik Lamela a 21 year-old and a 22-year-old. Skipper for the night, his first in competition, was Hugo Lloris. He was delighted with the honour and felt the senior players around the squad were important to help the youngsters.

“It’s a mark of confidence from the manager and from my team-mates but maybe it was just the story of the night. There are some important senior players in the team and we have to be an example and show our team-mates the right way.
“There are some players with experience like Adebayor, Younes, Jan, Daws and I who are here to provide an example for the rest of the team and make sure the spirit is a good one.
We knew beforehand to expect a difficult game and that was the case on a difficult pitch. To play against an opponent who played very deep meant we didn’t find any space in the first half and then we conceded the goal.
"We needed the character and the good attitude to come back and win the game. We did the job which was the important thing today.”

Lloris singled out the substitutes for special praise feeling, quite rightly, that they changed the game.

“It’s not only Erik, all the players who came on made a difference today, they were important and they helped the team get the result so we have to congratulate them. We showed the good spirit that there is in the team.”

The start showed you have to be motivated for very game and getting the selection right is not always easy. The objective would have been to win the game while giving some players game time and others their first partial game of what is for them pre-season.

Those objectives were both achieved.

Pochettino - we thought it would be easy

10:30 am
I have said it before and I'll say it again, mentality is everything in sport, especially at the top level and Mauricio Pochettino admits the Tottenham mentality is wrong.

Pochettino - we thought it would be easy

Before the game I cited the Leeds United FA Cup game in 2013 when Mousa Dembele came out after the game and said he wasn't motivated for it, the result a poor performance and we lost. Spurs had underestimated their opponents and approached the game as if it would be easy.

They did the same thing to AEL Limassol and nearly came unstuck again. It is a worrying trend. Again before the game I spoke of Harry Kane and his attitude would be important to us in this game, he turned out to be the one outfield player who was 'up for it' and was head and shoulders above everyone else.

“I think it was a very tough game a difficult game, a hard game because he conditions were difficult and the weather was difficult. I’m happy with the performance. In the end 2-1 for us is an important result for us.
“It is true that in the first half we started to make mistakes, but in general, I am happy and looking forward to the next game, on Sunday. We created two or three chances in the first seven minutes.
"I think it’s true that we believed that it would be an easy game, but we knew when we watched their game against Zenit, Limassol won the game won 1-0, that they have a very good team.
“In the second half we started the game, I think we restarted the game in the second half and I’m very satisfied after the game.”

What he says there is they thought it would be easy but after watching videos of when they beat AVB managed Zenit St Petersburg they changed their view. Well it seems Pochettino did but some of the players clearly didn't.

Every footballer should motivate themselves and every footballer should see every game as a big game, if they don't then they have a mental weakness. A player who is only going to give his best for a game he perceives to be big is of no use. Put a group of weak minds together and you have no hope of winning anything.

Of the attacking four only Harry Kane stood up and said I should be starting games boss, the others didn't and therefore shouldn't.

AEL are motivated, hope Spurs are

Only Hugo Lloris, Kyle Naughton, Nabil Bentaleb and Eric Dier retaining their places from Saturday, all defensive players and they were left stranded by the rest who thought it would be easy and that AEL didn't really pose a threat. Well they did, playing like that they carries a huge threat.

Ben Davies gave an impersonation of Danny Rose last season and was easily beaten on several occasions, Naughton had his moments on the right and Vertonghen was rusty. Mind you he wasn't as rusty as Paulinho who isn't anywhere near being ready.

Holtby did what Holtby does, run around a lot, Townsend was back to his me me me old ways. It all smacked of, as Pochettino said, they thought it would be easy, then because they are not mentally switched on they couldn't change the game. If you have a few players thinking it'll be easy then they tend to play for themselves more which destroys the team game.

There are positives to take from the game, a few World Cup players got what was effectively their first pre-season game into their legs and to apply the new system in an actual game. Harry Kane deserves great credit, Soldado scored a super volley to level the score but he also missed a sitter from 6 yards, Erik Lamela played for 18 minutes and did more in that time than anyone, he transformed the game.

Lamela's performance is so encouraging, after finding his confidence in pre-season he knocked in a few goals, started against West Ham and now has had a major match winning impact on a game. It shows mentally he is in the right place.

A few of the others need to join him.

VIDEO Highlights AEL 1 SPURS 2

9:25 pm
Well I got to see 69 minutes of it before the disjointed stream went and sods law we scored two goals after that. However I have the goal highlights for you including a belter from Soldado.

VIDEO Highlights AEL 1 SPURS 2

The first half was poor, the midfield kept getting caught in front of the ball so as soon as we lost it they were out the game leaving Bentaleb and the defence to cope.

14 minutes and Vertonghen under no pressure tries a pass across the half way line but it is cut out. We get the ball back but a daft interchange of passes 2 yards apart between Vertonghen and Paulinho goes wrong leaving the attacker a free run at goal from 40 yards and he slots his shot past Lloris into the corner of the net. 1-0 down.

20 mins an attack but we want to play too many passes and nobody actually has a shot
23 mins Townsend gives away a free kick on the edge of the box, deflected for a corner
24 mins Naughton with time gives the ball way, they switch play and a cross  ends up with a diving header that can't be controlled.
25 mins Townsend cross from the right just too high for Harry Kane
27 mins Davies sells himself, dangerous cross saved on the floor by Lloris.
29 mins Kane tried a shot from 40 yards easily saved
31 mins Kane makes his own room for a shot from the edge of the box, well saved
33 mins an excellent ball in behind Davies and Lloris has to race out to clear the danger 12 yards out
35 mins mazy run from Kane, looked like a foul but not given, they break and Holtby crashes into the back on the man on the ball angry a free kick wasn't given and gets booked.
43 mins desperate block from Vertonghen prevents a shot on target

They looked dangerous attacking a stretched defence at times, it was as if the midfield didn't have enough respect for their opponents and took them lightly. Pochettino could be seen permanently in the technical area, frequently wandering from one end to the other. He wouldn't have been happy with what he was seeing.

We didn't seem that dangerous in the second half either but Lamela came on and crossed for a sublime Soldado volley before slipping a short pass to Kane who beat his man and blasted the ball into the net. Mention must be made of an excellent off the ball run from Soldado to take the defender out the middle and create the hole for Kane to exploit.

SPURS TEAM + Kane, not a boy among men anymore

3:48 pm
Harry Kane is looking forward to the UEFA Europa League tonight where not only his strength but his attitude will make him a handful.

SPURS XI  Lloris (c); Naughton, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies; Bentaleb, Paulinho; Holtby, Townsend, Kane; Soldado.

Subs: Friedel, Rose, Dawson, Chadli, Dembele, Sandro, Lamela.

He reveals what some fans tend to overlook in young players and don't take into account when dismissing them as being not good enough too early. Those that were saying sell him he is only Championship quality were made to look rather foolish towards the end of last season when he got his chance and not only scored goals but produced performances that showed he belonged at Premier league level.

“When I was a bit younger, I thought defenders were a bit stronger in different aspects, but now I feel as I am as strong as any defender out there. I don’t feel uncomfortable when I’m on the pitch. I feel stronger than ever, faster than ever and hopefully I can impose that on the opposition.
“Obviously I feel like all the loan spells away from Spurs have helped me along the way. They’ve all been great experiences to push me in the right direction. Now I feel I have developed and I am ready to take the big stage in the Premier League.”

Tonight he is expected to play some part in the UEFA Europa League qualifying round tie against AEL Limassol in Cyprus. It is a tournament that is designed to make money for clubs via plenty of European games and thus it's format has been criticised.

Money rules now so it's hardly likely to change, football is almost a secondary consideration. As such clubs in Europe now need squads that can in effect play two seasons in one, Spurs for instance played 54 games last season and that was without an FA Cup run. Kane sees it's value now it has the carrot at the end.

“I think it’s very important. Obviously now of course there is a Champions League spot for the winners, which makes it even more important.
“It is an important competition, we’re going to take it seriously and we’re looking forward to it.”

He could play as an out and out attacker but Roberto Soldado is likely to play that role today so it is more likely that he will take over Christian Eriksens role as he has done in pre-season games, most notable Celtic where we won 6-1 and he scored.

It's unlikely to be 6-1 tonight but a victory to bring back to White Hart Lane must be the priority and it would be good to see some clinical finishing throughout the game, it#s a habit we must get into.

A step into the unknown for Pochettino - My XI

2:30 pm
The AEL Limassol game represents a big game for Mauricio Pochettino in a competition he is not a lover of.

European competition as a manager in entirely new to him, neither Espanyol or Southampton made it to European competition so he will need to learn fast. He will have to accept his side will play on a poor pitch that upsets his passing game, the training is in a heat and humidity he doesn't see over here, then there is the game itself in the same conditions, there are selection issues balancing the need to win with a Premier League game at the weekend and the desire to give squad players game time.

Managing a squad in a European competition and domestic league is a bit different than simply picking the same players week in week out. There were murmurs at previous clubs that he had his favourites, well at smaller clubs you have less quality players to choose from and have to pick basically the same eleven each week so it could seem like that.

Here at Tottenham though is a squad full of talent that all expect to play and that has to be considered and managed while keeping all the players on your side. To that end the UEFA Europa League is a blessing rather than a distraction, it enables players to play and impress the manager.

At last now the Europa League has a Champions League carrot for the first time, this will be the first time the winners get entry into the major European competition and why Pochettino now has it on his radar as he confirmed to journalist Simon Peach.

"The Europa League is now a different competition. "Why? Well, if you won it last year you basically got nothing. Just a trophy.
"Now the Europa League gives you the opportunity to play in the Champions League. That is a big challenge for us."

He decided to leave some important players behind for this game so Emmanuel Adebayor, Christian Eriksen, Aaron Lennon, Younes Kaboul and Etienne Capoue didn't make the trip, while Michel Vorm isn't registered for this stage of the competition.

The returning World Cup players Mousa Dembele, Nacer Chadli, Jan Vertonghen and Paulinho are all hoping to figure while Michael Dawson has been out since the 19th minute of the pre-season 6-1 win against Celtic on August 2nd.

Ben Davies will also be hoping to start having watched Danny Rose play in the opening Premier League fixture against West Ham on Saturday. He has quickly learnt you have to fight for your place in a squad, Pochettino will want to see how he reacts to that.

Up front Roberto Soldado is expected to lead the line with Adebayor being rested for the weekend and Harry Kane may well get to play in Christian Eriksens role, another left behind.

My Spurs XI would see Paulinho on the bench, coming on for the second half for Dembele.

AEL are motivated, hope Spurs are

10:30 am
There is commonly used phrase in football that there are no easy games anymore but that message has not filtered through to all supporters, some still expect Tottenham to simply roll over opposition they know nothing about.

AEL vs Spurs

The World Cup seems to have taught these people little when England couldn't even beat a disinterested Costa Rica team. Any side can be difficult to beat with team work and discipline. When a side is difficult to beat anything can happen, a mistake or a penalty and then what some assume is an easy game is suddenly a loss.

Tottenham have been guilty of underestimating opposition and players not getting themselves 'up' for a game before as Mousa Dembele said when we lost 2-1 to Leeds United in the 2013 FA Cup, saying he wasn't motivated for the game. That's not a problem AEL will have.

Ivaylo Petev, the AEL Limassol FC coach told UEFA.com that Spurs are a massive club and it's a very difficult draw which the team will have to be at it'sbest for.

"I believe 21 August will be a very good day for AEL. There is belief and it is vital that there is in the squad. We managed to beat a club like Zenit in our previous tie in Europe and were then unlucky to go out against them because we played with ten men for some 70 minutes [in the second leg]. But that is now behind us.
"They [Spurs] are a massive club and it is crucial we minimise our mistakes against them because they know how to punish every little error. The truth is that this was a very difficult draw for us and we were not so lucky. But, that aside, it is very important that we are ready for the first game and play well."

The AEL captain Marios Nikolaou said he felt that Tottenham was a tough draw for his side but that challenges are experiences to look forward to.

"This game will be an experience for us all and a challenge. We know they are a great side but we certainly don't fear them – we will look them in the eye. We will need to be at our best. We were handed a tough draw, but that is football and we need to be ready."

The game provides an opportunity for Spurs to give some game time to their returning World Cup stars who will shortly be off for international duty again so will all want to be fit by the end of the month.

AEL Limassol FC v Tottenahm Hotspur FC

The pitch in Larnaca for tonight game is diabolical and Muuricio Pochettino isn't very happy about it. Apart from the fact that it ruins passing football it increases the likelihood of injuries and that may affect team selection.

Michael Dawson is coming back from an ankle injury and this wouldn't be the ideal surface to return him on and Pochettino wouldn't want Vertonghen to twist an ankle for instance, he received an injury on a previous terrible pitch when Tottenham played Sunderland in Hong Kong last summer in a pre-season tournament.

We all await our first clues as to how he will approach the tie and indeed the Europa League, we know the club objective is to win it and keep the Tottenham name alive in European competition and thus European media.

The game will be played in heat of about 32 degrees.
