Video: Son's super performance vs Sunderland

12:30 pm

SPURS 1 SUNDERLAND 0

We had more shots than any other team in the Premier League this season in the first half, but they weren't real clear cut chances. We started well, we had most of the ball, 59% of our passes were in the opposition half, but in the second half, when we had gone 1-0 up, we seemed to take our foot off the gas a little.

There was almost an air of we have done enough, we started defending a little deeper. When passing the ball around at the back we were nearer our own goal and we looked as though we may get caught by a sucker punch from a mistake and we did make a few during that period.

We still created chances and central to our performance was the performance of South Korean Son Heung-min, who again starred and justified the clubs decision not to allow him to leave. We fans expected him to improve in his second season and he has certainly done that. From a promising beginning he faded away and his beginning this season is even better than lasts.

We want to see the level of performance he put in away to Stoke and now at home to Sunderland on a regular basis. That allows us to rotate the attacking midfield three, especially with Moussa Sissoko looking the part as well.

Has team selection been made easier

10:30 am
Has-team-selection-been-made-easier

A look at the Tottenham Hotspur fixtures for September shows that Mauricio Pochettino will have to juggle his troops, starting with the Sunderland game.

13th: Sunderland (a) 17th: Qarabag (h) UEFA Europa League 20th: Crystal Palace (h) 23rd: Arsenal (h) League Cup Third Round 26th: Man City (h)

One assumes he wants to play the strongest side in the Premier League fixtures, although what our strongest side is with two new forward signings is unclear.

Harry Kane will surely start the three Premier League fixtures against Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Manchester City while having a rest for the midweek games. Clinton Njie you would expect to see playing the IEFA Europa League tie against Azerbaijani side  Qarabag and north London rivals Arsenal in the League Cup.

Son Heung-min is fit to play, has more experience than Njie and operates from a wide position rather than centrally like Njie. Christian Eriksen is not going to be fit enough to play, nor probablyt is Mousa Dembele so we may see us play with Kane and Mason centrally again, but more likely perhaps one of our new striking options to partner Kane.

That would leave the right hand side, do Lamlea or Townsend come in, will Chadli move to the right, will Njie or Son be shunted out there, it's not the natural position for either player. Injuries have perhaps taken away some tough decision for Pochettino, knowing the team selection and starting the game can' come around soon enough.

Plenty of questions to answer at the wekend

12:56 pm
Christian Eriksen missed the two international fixtures for Denmark but is expected to be available for selection at the weekend, as is new signing Clinton Njié, who also had an injury during the international break.

Njié is expected to be fit and fellow new signing Son Heung-min has been granted a work permit and international clearance. One thing he won't be able to do though is buy a lucky colour red car as he told Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo in an exclusive interview.

"Tottenham officials already told me I can’t even buy a red car. I’m very excited to play against Arsenal. Whatever match I play, I want to score goals. Since I’m a forward, my goal-scoring record will speak for me. Tottenham plays aggressive football, which I like very much, and I like to pressure opponents from the front. I think I can be a better player if I train under Pochettino."

He calls himself a forward, Njié is a central player rather than a wide player, he started only one game on either the left or right least season in the French League, 13 centrally. It will be interesting to see how Pochettino deploys them, will Son start and if so will he be on his normal left with Chadli moving to the right?

Will h be a sub, will Njié play behind Kane or be saved to start on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League? Where will Eriksen start or will he, is the bench the best Lamela can hope for?

WE will start to get some ideas and some answers at the weekend and can put all the knee-jerk reactionists behind us.

Emmanuel Adebayor Performance Report

Another good performance from Emmanuel Adebayor which won't silence the doubters or those that want him sold. he fits the system we are playing and his link up play with the other three attackers is excellent. They are all changing positions and he is playing a successful part in that being involved with both goals.

The first was from his rebounded shot that Chadli scored, the second he passed to Chadli on the left for him to cross. It was a simple ball but he had time and space and could have tried to go on his own, which would have been the difficult option.

At the start he played a beautiful one two with Eriksen who lobbed the ball over the defence for him but his shot cannoned off the advancing goalkeeper, who knew nothing about it.

He whole performance was one of not standing out but blending with the others so you almost don't notice who is doing what. You don't have to catch the eye all the time to play well, you simply need to play your role, the role the coach wants you to play and he did that superbly, even after playing two games in Africa during the international break.

Nacer Chadli Performance Report

Nacer Chadli had an excellent start to the game getting on the score sheet after just a minute, it would have been quicker if Danny Rose had picked the right ball across the 6 yard box for a tap in for him after 30 seconds. Adebayor was given all the time in the world to turn his body towards goal and shoot, Chadli was following up while everyone was watching but he still had to put the ball away well.

It is not hard to see why Pochettino likes Chadli and why the reports of him being offered to other clubs was a complete load of nonsense. The word coming out during the transfer window was that Pochettino liked him and felt he could work with him. Three goals in three games suggests he was right. Chadli looks a goal threat where Townsend and Lennon don't. He interchanges brilliantly with the other attackers and pops up all over the place in scoring positions.

He could have had a tap in from the right, he scored form the left, he has scored from the centre and the right. He is finding more goalscoring positions than any other player at the moment and that is due to his vision, awareness and then running off the ball.

In the opening spell he was also getting behind the defence and pulling the ball back. Had he been as aware at the second half as he had been at the start of the first he could have had another from an excellent Adebayor through ball but he reacted to slowly and the chance was gone.

A minute later a simple but good ball from Adebayor put him away on the left and it was from his cross along the floor that confusion reigned in the defence and the attempted clearance hit Wes Brown, leaving Eriksen to bundle the ball home.

Like Eriksen this was probably his best performance in a Spurs shirt, he was constantly a threat and well as being a goal threat. We spend most of the time attacking down the left and he was the reason why.

I tough call but I'd give him the Man of the Match award over Eriksen by a whisker.

Erik Lamela Performance Report

Erik Lamela did OK, not a great performance, not a bad one, his teammates were performing well but he was not quite at their level today. This is effectively his first season in the Premier League having only completed 1 game and had 331 minutes in total last season.

He passed well, linked with his teammates well and showed skill that sometimes meant him taking too many people on. At one point in the second half he looked to have lost the ball but was strong in the tackle, won the ball, shifted it to his left foot and hit the bar. That was Lamela all over, he has that extra something in his locker that can make the difference in games, obviously though it doesn't always come off.

We attacked more down the left so didn't get totally into the game in the first half, in the second he was more involved in the creativity as we searched for a third, the ball in to Adebayor was just a touch to strong but the vision was superb. Games like this will be good for his education of the Premier League, he wasn't at his best but was still making useful contributions and was not doing anything you'd single out as being wrong, a tendency to sometimes take too many on perhaps, but in other games It'll come off and he'll take three men out the game which immediately gives us a big advantage.

A decent performance without sparkling.
