Spurs vs Dortmund

Hello and good morning everyone from this sunny part of the coast.

On Twitter I have posted 9 out of 9 NBA win percentages, getting them all correct and yesterday posted 4 out of 4 winning tennis bets as well as having the Private Members Treble win to start us off on another journey to, we hope, hundreds of pounds again this week after picking up £546 for a £10 starting stake last week.

If anyone wishes to subscribe you'll find a payment button underneath the FORUM tab, as I haven't managed to change that yet, not being a technical guy. The charge is £25 per month but if you send me a message via the contact form on the website then I'll send the selections free for a couple of weeks to get you into profit first.

Right, back to Tottenham and we turn our attention to tonight's big game against Borussia Dortmund.

I expected PSG to beat United last night and they were easily the better side. We hammered the Red Devils but lost 1-0 and last season only went out to the eventual finalists because we lost our concentration for a couple of minutes in each leg, although one goal in the first leg was offside.

If I can take you back to that Juventus game we controlled it in the second half and the pressure was all from us. This season we have gone to Barcelona and grabbed a draw to qualify, despite going 1-0 down.

We are a better side than a lot of our fans give us credit for.

Dortmund are flying, there is no denying that but like Spurs they have players missing too. I would expect Son to play upfront, not Llorente as he has greater movement and is scoring goals.

Rose is a big doubt so Vertonghen at left-back vs Jadon Sancho is intriguing. Experience vs youthful skill. Surely staring in the Bundesliga he'll be given an England cap soon, despite his age.

Dortmund drew 3-3fter being 3-0 up with 15 minutes to go on Saturday and they concede an average of 1.5goals per game, while they score an average of 2.3.

Tottenham concedes an average of 0.8 per game and scores an average of 2 per game.

Statistics suggest that we have an 80% chance of scoring a goal and they have a 90% chance of conceding a goal. Alternatively, they suggest Dortmund have a 100% chance of scoring while we have a 60% chance of conceding.

There is a 60% chance of each side picking up a yellow card.

The last 6 games since 2016 have seen us win 3, lose 2 and draw 1, thus we win 50% of the games, Dortmund win 33.3% and we draw 16.7%.

At home, we have won 1 against them and lost 1.

Our 6 game form in the UEFA Champions League has seen us D W W D L L.
Dortmund 6 game form W D L W W W.

Mauricio Pochettino has won 11 of the 15 games since the end of the group stages and we have won our last three fixtures.

The Germans dropped points against both Eintracht Frankfurt and Hoffenheim and in between lost on penalties to Werder Bremen in the DFB Pokal.

Spurs have scored in 23 of our last 25 games, but we have only kept 1 clean sheet in 7, Dortmund have scored 12 goals in their last 4 games. They have also scored in all but 2 of their last 15 UEFA Champions League games while conceding in 9 of them. In this competition 7 of our last 8 games have seen both teams score.

Some of our fans are pessimistic about the game but you know me, positivity breeds success so I'll be watching in that mind frame and enjoy the spectacle.

Confirmation, if confirmation were needed

Well, Borussia Dortmund gave us a lesson on a night when two away sides grabbed draws, the rest lost. There were a few things we already knew that were reinforced, which helps to clear heads and confirm the way forward.

Borussia Dortmund are regularly in the Champions League and the gap in class between that and UEFA Europa League regulars was clear. We knew we were not the finished article and this game confirmed it. We didn't have out strongest side out, but this is a squad sport now and the players who come in have to be up to the mark.

Mauricio Pochettino threw a few surprises. Now I don't know the fitness of the squad, but I do know that we are virtually certain to be in the Champions league next season without having to win the Europa League, a route many suggested we would have to take to qualify. Did that have a bearing on selection? Was the game used for the coaching staff to see the reaction of Onomah and Carroll?

With the side selected I assume that Pochettino was hoping for a draw or would have settled for a 1-0 loss, although the side arguably didn't have the qualities required for that. The first goal was from the right where Josh Onomah was receiving an education. It will do his development a power of good, playing against quality opposition, but there can be no doubt it was a gamble.

Did it fail, well yes on the night it did, but there is a bigger picture with him. The club are looking to prepare him for next season and a larger role so we perhaps won't see any results until then. If we do then the night will have been a success, it depends on what terms you are using to judge, for him and, therefore the club, it has to be through the eyes of development.

Concentration comes with experience and switching off when defending or deciding the right things to do is arrived at by trial and error. The coaching staff can now sit down with a video of the game, pull the good points and those that require working on. He has had a feel of 81,000 and quality opposition.

It was in defensive midfield where the major shock for me occurred. Ryan Mason and Tom Carroll. I would have had no qualms about using Ryan Mason in midfield, it gives others a rest. You know from him you'll get tireless work and he made crucial blocks at times.

I have questioned Tom Carroll mentally before. Anyone can play when everything is going right, when it is going wrong you see how a player reacts, that tells you more about him that at any other time. Carroll was out of his depth, he went to pieces and he couldn't shield the back four. Can he improve, yes of course, but the mental weakness he has displayed before came back to haunt us.

He is not a good enough defensive midfielder at the top level. Early in the season, Dele Alli took his chance, he didn't need a run of games to shine. Last season Harry Kane and Ryan Mason took their chances immediately. Tom Carroll didn't have that mental strength and it rang alarm bells with me.

Wanting a player to achieve, having a favourite is one thing, but if you have the mental strength and the motivation you have to find a way to make your mark. That doesn't mean you have to do something brilliant, it may mean just doing your job is a most efficient manner with no fuss.

To me Carroll is a showboater when he passes, he has to have a body shape that makes the pass look great. It is an exaggeration but the outcome of the pass seems a secondary consideration to the aesthetic of playing it.

Now I'm not pinning the blame for defeat on Tom Carroll, but for me, the game confirmed what I though last summer, he isn't good enough for where we want to be. There is always that weakness and we know in pressure situations the mind unless trained, slips into default mode. For Carroll, that is a ruffled state, uncertain and thus prone to mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes, but Carroll made far too many to be acceptable. Mentally he couldn't make the right decisions.

During the summer, we will need an upgrade.

If you do not have much of a shield in front of the back four then you are placing them under severe pressure and then instead of playing a system, you are fire fighting. Defenders have no choice but to be pulled out of position. Having Onomah and Carroll gave Dortmund an opportunity they exploited. Defenders were dropping back to keep players onside. That is a sign of worry, a lack of confidence in those in front of you.

What we have to do with that game is analyse it and determine where we need to improve the quality of the squad. For me the game confirmed Tom Carroll tops the list of players to let go, he has the skill but he doesn't have the mental makeup to play at the top. That confirmation and the development for Onomah were the two main positives to take from the game.

UEFA Europa League
Signal Iduna Park
(formerly) Westfalenstadion, FIFA World Cup Stadium Dortmund (2006 FIFA World Cup)
Dortmund, Germany
Capacity 81,359

Borussia Dortmund is next up for the boys, BVB for short. The German club was founded on 19 December 1909 and have a former World Cup stadium with around 50,000 greater capacity than ourselves. That will give our away fans a challenge to be heard once again, something for which they have done us proud all season. Sing it loud, sing it proud, we are Tottenham.

Prior to converting Eric Dier we were looking at Sven Bender, who has now signed a new contract, we have been linked with İlkay Gündoğan, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, their vice-captain, Marco Reus, is constantly linked with Manchester United and Liverpool, captain Mats Hummels is another constantly linked with Manchester United and Shinji Kagawa is a former United player.

The ground was built for £32.7 million in 1974 and an estimated £200 in 2006 to prepare it for hosting the World Cup Final

They have a raft of domestic trophies and well as having won the Champions League and the UEFA European Cup Winners Cup. That is a trophy we want to see back, not this Europa League stuff to pile on the games for sponsors and TV.

In the UK, the game is only on the radio, while the rest of the world can watch it live. In the UK it is illegal to tune into a live Internet stream of the event so please do not do so. This blog is read in over 197 countries, though, so for those of you in foreign climes who are permitted to do so, you can watch the game by visiting this Football Streaming website that is simply laid out and easy to follow.

Simply type the name of the side in the search box at the top of the listings and the game you want will appear. Click this and the available live streams will be displayed.

A Champions League challenge

8:03 am
Thanks for the messages of support. I have been hardly able to see out of my left eye, disappointing since I have gone a whole winter without much trouble. The weeping has started so reading anything is a great difficulty. Having had this for 5 years, I know when it gets like this I have to avoid the laptop for a brief spell to not aggravate the condition, thus there have been no posts, as you have experienced before.

It is Thursday, it is the UEFA Europa League, it is Germany and it is Borussia Dortmund. A quick peek at the bookmakers odds and they have Dortmund as hot favourites with Tottenham at over 5/1 and te draw over 3/1, wich seems massive to me, but I never bet on Spurs matches.

Dortmund sit second in the Bundesliga 5 points adrift of Bayern Munich and 12 points clear of Hertha Berlin in third. We are also 5 points adrift of Leicester City so it is a tough game for both sides and one where a draw for us would be a good result.

We are very used to squad rotation now, Alli is of course suspended thanks to a ridiculous referee decision, Eric Dier is having a well-earned rest and Danny Rose has a touch of cramp.

Lloris, Vorm, Walker, Trippier, Davies, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Carter-Vickers, Winks, Dembele, Mason, Carroll, Bentaleb, Eriksen, Onomah, Lamela, Son, Chadli, Kane, Harrison.

You would expect to see Hugo Lloris between the jumpers, with Trippier and Davies at full-back. Alderweireld and Wimmer have to start in central defence, where a slight concern is that Wimmer seems to pick up a yellow card per game. It isn't quite that bad, but he does pick up too many for my liking.

In front of himNabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason may get the nod, however as usual, whoever plays the Mason role may well be hauled off after 60 or 70 minutes for a replacement. Son didn't start at the weekend, you would expect him to start this game having come to us from the Bundesliga. It makes sense to use that experience.

Erik Lamela has been doing well in Europe, but if we want to play him at the weekend he may well give way to Chadli. Again you would expect a change after 60 or 70 minutes. The third member of the attacking trio you expect to be Eriksen, again being substituted with the weekend in mind. Harry Kane up top.

If we want to compete in the Champions League then this is the standard of team we have to be used to playing. They are Champion League regulars, they have a level of European experince that this young Spurs side don't have. The game will be an education and an excellent test. It is a game to look forward to, a challenge. If you want to win anything then you have to meet challenges head on, squarely in the eye.You can not be afraid of them, put them off or shy away from them.

That is the way Mauricio Pochettino operates and this team operate. Good luck boys.
