Wrong result, encouraging signs

SPURS 1 Chelsea 2

Spurs showed enough to show that Wembley isn't going to be a problem. We lost to a free kick where Hugo Lloris was a pace to far to one side of the goal. If you look at his eye line for the free kick he could, and perhaps should, have been a pace to his left.

From where he was he had no chance of getting across the goal as was proven. A left footer is eight times out of ten going to play the ball over the wall and the ball was not even in the corner but still Lloris got nowhere near it.

One up, they soaked up the pressure, we were helped by an own goal and then Wanyama, who kept giving the ball away in midfield, did so again and they scored after another Lloris error. Clearly Wanyama is not up to full fitness yet, which showed, mentally he wasn't sharp enough. Game time will give him that, but was it an error taking Dier off instead of Wanyama, the result suggests it was.

The French skipper should easily have kept out Alonso's shot, had it been Pat Jennings he would simply have stuck out a foot. It doesn't matter how you stop them, as long as you stop them, bottom line is Lloris didn't and the picture of him just before the game ended showed it clearly all over his face.

The wrong result but plenty of encouraging signs.

Midfield to blame for the goals

1:29 pm

Midfield must take their share of the responsibility

Replying to
Yep. We all thought this would be the turning point. We seem to save defensive errors for these big games away too

The above quote is the generally perceived view, but it is wrong.

The first goal was not because we committed a foul outside our own box that we didn't need to make perhaps. That was not the cause.

As a coach, I have talked before about finding the root of a problem and solving that. What happens after the root of the problem is the effect of that so solve that any the problem doesn't arise.

The problem was on the edge of their box where we gave the ball away with a weak pass, something we did several times and something which I am constantly showing we do wrong. Passes should be zipped, not rolled so opponents do not have that chance to steal the ball.

I'd have to check but if I remember right the same thing happened for the second goal, so while the defence made mistakes (no excuse for Son's tackle), the root cause was in midfield outside their box. That is where responsibility initially lies. Had those errors not been made then players would not have been in the situations they were and would not have had to make the decisions they made.

Yes, decision making at that point wasn't of the standard we need, but we put them in that position by giving away the ball easily with an unforced error.

Two tactics, 2-0 both times

SPURS vCHELSEA

Dele Alli buried Chelsea last time when we targeted the left-hand side channel between Victor Moses at right-back and César Azpilicueta at right centre-back. Moses is not a natural defender and Spaniard Azpilicueta is only 1.78m (5ft 10in).

The opening graphic above shows our ball movement for the first goal where we dragged players away from Christian Eriksen to give him the chance to cross for Alli to nod home. The second goal was incredibly similar, another Eriksen cross from a similar position to Alli for him to head home again.

Key for both graphics
No. 2 Kyle Walker
No. 3 Danny Rose
No. 4 Toby Alderweireld
No. 5 Jan Vertonghen
No. 10 Harry Kane
No. 12 Victor Wanyama
No. 15 Eric Dier
No. 19 Mousa Dembele
No. 20 Dele Alli
No. 23 Christian Eriksen

In scoring the two goals everyone was involved. We then controlled the game to come out easy winners in the end with Dele Alli being named Man of the Match.

Jose Mourinho simply stopped the supply line to Costa, man marking Hazard and Pedro to which Chelsea had no answers. His speedy forwards, one a winger, then caused the high-line Chelsea defence a lot of problems.

Two tactics that worked against the league leaders, no reason why they won't work again.

No fear from Spurs

Spurs are the only team challenging them for the Premier League title, we were the only team challenging Leicester City last season and now the top two teams in the league are meeting in the FA Cup semi-final, having met in the League Cup Final in 2015.

Belgian centre-back Jan Vertonghen sees nothing to fear from our opponents at the weekend.

“We will play with a lot more confidence. Chelsea back then like now looked very strong and solid. I think we have improved a lot since then [2015].
“They [Chelsea] have played great and obviously Eden [Hazard] is a very special player but we have played against him this season and we have played against Chelsea this season and we won.
“Obviously we lost away but I think our first half there [at Stamford Bridge] was maybe our best of the season and I think we’ve got nothing to be afraid of.
“I think we have proved already we can beat big teams, we have done that last year we have done that this year. I don’t think we have got anything to prove on Saturday.
“I think we can reach the same level [at Wembley] as we do at White Hart Lane, we’re going to try."

Former Blues boss Jose Mourinho masterminded a tactical 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Easter Sunday and highlighted what he felt was the key to stopping them.

"We gave them double problems - problems when we had the ball and problems when we recovered the ball because we were really sharp and fast and aggressive in our transitions.
"Mourinho added that the key to Manchester United beating Chelsea was eliminating the threat they posed through Eden Hazard and Pedro working behind Diego Costa and also their effectiveness in wide positions on the counter-attack."

Now Pochettino has beaten Antonio Conte before, we outplayed them at White Hart Lane and last season we used Christian Eriksen to take their defensive shield away from in front of the centre-backs exposing them to attack. They couldn't live with us in the first half but made tactical changes in the second half that made a difference. We conceded goals at the wrong times and will have to execute our plans better if we are to come out on top again.

Rested players give Spurs a real chance

3:13 pm

SPURS 2 CHELSEA 0

I have to say Victor Wanyama put in a stellar display in front of the back four last night, one of the best games he has played for us in terms of breaking up play. A snip at £11 million and an example of why we, and other clubs, look hard at players who are coming to the end of their contracts. Their value plummets and when purchased they are immediately worth more than you have paid for them.

Fortunately, we have been tieing all our players down to long-term contracts to keep their potential transfer fees high and thus ward off potential suitors who would like a bargain. Mauricio Pochettino will have indicated to Daniel Levy which players he would like tied down to new contracts and our chairman has been delivered, protecting the clubs assets.

The fact that the players are all signing shows they are happy at the club and have totally bought into what Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino are trying to achieve. They want to part of something special, they want more of the important games, like last night.

Now we have virtually all the first-team available and now we have moved into third we are well placed to kick on in the second half of the season with relatively fresh players. Harry Kane has had a good rest, Toby Alderweireld has had a good rest, Erik Lamela has had a good rest, Mousa Dembele has had plenty of rest. It all augurs well.

Great Team performance and massive thank you to the fans for their support

An opportunity to go 3rd

11:00 pm

SPURS vs CHELSEA

Well if it were possible this game has taken on even greater significance. Liverpool have dropped points but more importantly right now, Arsenal have dropped points, meaning a win against Chelsea would take us into 3rd place and push Arsenal into 5th.

Jan Vertonghen believes Mauricio Pochettino has a plan to stop Chelsea, harry Kane has been talking about how up for this the players are and we are in confident goalscoring mode at the moment, a far cry from earlier in the season.

At Stamford Bridge we had a makeshift back four with Kevin Wimmer playing left-back, none too successfully. Now we have Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker back from suspension and Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose fit. That gives us greater confidence going into the game.

We changed formation for Watford, as we did for Arsenal earlier in the season, how will we operate against Chelsea? We'll have to wait and see, thankfully we won't have to wait too much longer. Instead of having the pressure to keep up, we now have an opportunity, which is what you want playing top level sport. It is all about opportunities and taking them. We need to take this one, too many time we stumble at this hurdle.

A win and we go third so the other clubs have to worry about us and try to overtake us instead of the other way around. They are different pressures. We handled being in the top four quite well last season and we now need to start replicating that in the second half of this season.

36,000 watch a Spurs youth game

1:10 pm
We recently played Chelsea in a youth game and there was a significant number of US TV viewers. It hints at the level of interest there in football and in Tottenham over there. The market clearly has massive potential for anyone breaking the back of it.

Spurs vs. Chelsea U21 game on Monday was watched by 36,000 people on NBCSN.

North America is simply a must-have market for any club. We as a club can't wait until the market is developed and then tap into it and the boat will have sailed. We have to instil Tottenham in the minds of everyone so they grow as Spurs fans and that their children become Spurs fans.

The sponsorship deals that come from America are huge, Manchester United Chevrolet shirt deal for instance.

You can see from these figures we are £31 million behind Manchester United per season, increasing ur popularity over there will allow us to look for a higher paying shirt sponsor, as well as future naming rights sponsors and commercial deals.

Having a stadium that has been built with an eye on their national sport is a potential goldmine. The importance of being beamed live into US homes can not be overstated. It offers us an unrivalled opportunity to turn the club into a major player, to turn the club into one of the major clubs in the world.

I am not exaggerating when I say we could compete with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, perhaps in a way no other clubs can. PSG may be able to compete on money, as may Manchester City but they can not compete on glamour.

Obviously, it is important that Tottenham are in the UEFA Champions League when we are beamed into US homes, we need them to know we are a big club. Just as many English fans support the New England Patriots (Harry Kane's side), simply because they have England in their name, so many a US fan will follow Tottenham because that is the home of US football in the UK. I know it isn't now, but the clearly that is the plan and it is a plan we should do everything to encourage.

The pieces of the jigsaw are there. Mauricio Pochettino developing youth, the capacity to purchase the best youth ion the world, a new stadium as the UK home of the NFL, UEFA Champions League football, a massive American TV market and the potential huge sponsorship deals as a result.

If everything can come together we could have Spurs rivalling Real Madrid. Nothing is certain, but you have to aim for the stars to reach the sky, you have to aim for the title to reach a Champions League place.

Tottenham have dreams, Daniel Levy has a clear vision and if you are not backing that vision then you are not really a Tottenham fan are you. The clock can not be turned back, it is no longer a game for the man on the terrace, each club is a multi-million-pound industry in its own right.

If you don't want Daniel Levy, you don't really want to rival the best do you. The objective is obvious so why would you want to oust the man taking us there?

Mauricio Pochettino was happy with the Spurs performance after a 5,000-mile journey to and from Azerbaijan. He spoke before the game and twice said there are no excuses a poor performance.

Chelsea parked the most expensive bus in the league playing with no striker and aiming to steal a victory. They however only had one shot on target the whole game being more concerned with stopping Tottenham than trying to win.

Neville sees a new Spurs approach

11:00 am
Gary Neville, as an England coach has seen Spurs players first hand and notices a change in approach. What he has to say is revealing about Spurs and why we struggled when it came to the business end of the season.

Football is a mental game, if your mind isn't functioning as a winner then your body is not going to produce winning performances on a consistent basis when the pressure is on. Anyone can be a flat track bully and dominate when it is easy, it's what you can do when the pressure steps up that determines success or failure.

Stepping up to play for England, regardless of what fans think, is a big issue. You are playing for your nation and all players want to do that. You can't simply go through the motions and expect to excel. There have been too many players sat Spurs who have been prepared to go through the motions at club level. Under Pochettino that simply isn't an option, ask Mousa Dembele.

"In my role as an England coach I have noticed the difference in psychology and application when Tottenham players come into the camp. They now arrive prepared for the battle, ready to play, ready to work. They look like they want to partake in the meetings. All the things you would want from responsible players are there. It seems to me that Pochettino has given the younger players the confidence to express themselves, off the pitch as well."

To be successful you have to embrace challenge, you have to welcome it rather than be frightened of it. Challenge is an opportunity, not a barrier. It is clear previously that Spurs players were in their comfort zone, happy to play at the level they were at. To change that you have to change a players motivation and to do that you have to find out what it truly is.

From watching the games and listening to the players talk it is clear they are up for the challenges ahead and that is now confirmed by a coach who works with them. The Arsenal game was a challenge, the West Ham game was a different challenge, one to produce the same level of performance, the Chelsea game is another challenge.

If we want to be successful these are the games we should be wanting, these are the games the players have to overcome pressure and overcome the challenge.

Will Eriksen take Matic out the game again

9:30 am
There are many theories floating around about the poor start to the season by Chelsea this season, some suggest it is fatigue, some suggest there is discontent with Jose Mourinho while others simply say Chelsea have been found out.

The Premier League is a cutthroat business, every side has an analyst who can call on all the data they need to study future opposition and find weaknesses. Each player is analysed, as well as the team. People revert to default when under pressure thus a team can predict what a player might do in given situations.

By ensuring all players are aware of the weaknesses of players they are likely to encounter, they can predict what a player may do and be ready for it. When a weakness is found it goes around the league. Each team studies how other sides played against each team, successful tactics are then duplicated.

Swansea changed their tactics against Chelsea using an attacking formation and a high-press. They wanted to stop Chelsea creating from deep. It worked a treat, the Chelsea midfield simply didn't get enough time on the ball. The result was the he pressing allied to swift counter-attacks gave Swansea an advantage Chelsea struggled to cope with.

Swansea simply used Gylfi Sigurdsson to run off the ball and pull Matic out of position which exposed Cahill and Terry to a ball through the middle. They also focussed on Ivanovic. Winger Montero, who gave us problems attacked him and Willian had to spend an increasing amount of time defending instead of attacking.

In our game against them last season at White Hart Lane we used Christian Eriksen to do the same thing and he pulled Matic all over the pitch. The organised Chelsea defence no longer had it's shield in front of it and were continually exposed.

We should not be frightened of going to Stamford Bridge. Adopting off the ball running and pulling Matic out of position will be key to the result. An analysis of the chances Chelsea are conceding sees that compared to last season they are conceding more chances centrally and from the right. The chances they are conceding are in more dangerous areas which is resulting in conceding more goals.

Dele Alli would have been an ideal player against Chelsea because he runs at the defence and Cesc Fabregas is a defensive weakness alongside Matic, he often is not as focussed on his defensive duties as he should be.

I expect to see us attack their right flank, pull Matic out of the centre and attack the right channel area (our left). Remember last season, Kane scored running from the right, he also turned Terry in that channel.

Stats suggest Spurs will finish above Chelsea

8:30 pm
Many pundits are predicting that Chelsea will make the top four, but statistics suggest they won't. They also suggest that Tottenham are on course for a top-four finish.

A team needs 68.6 points on average to finish 4th, Tottenham have 24 points from 13 games so far, an average of 1.846 points per game. There are 25 Premier League games remaining and Tottenham would need 44.5 points, an average of 1.78 points per game.

The editor of Statsbomb.com has done some maths or math if you are American.

Chelsea's mountain to climb:

A graduate student from British Columbia backed that up with statistics since 2000/01 showing nobody has shown the required improvement this century that Chelsea need to reach the top four this season. Their odds are currently a general 3/1.

The Big 7 League - Chelsea Bottom

8:31 am
For those who believe the league title and top four are determined by how we get on against our major rivals here is the Top 7 table produced by bass playing Andrew Beasley.

The big seven mini league makes pretty good reading for Liverpool, not least s they've played all 6 aways.

As you can see this is our 6th game against the traditional top 7 and our third away game after 14 rounds of fixtures. Stamford Bridge is not a place we have had much joy over the last 10 or more years, but then we were saying the same about Old Trafford and we have won there several times now.

We have taken a point there in 2012 (0-0) and 2013 (2-2), we then go back to 2008 (1-1) for a point, 2004 (0-0), 2003 (1-1), 1995 (0-0) and (1-1), 1993 (1-1). On 10th February 1990 Gary Lineker and David Howells scored in a 2-1 victory, the last time we have taken three points from Stamford Bridge.

The barrier, once broken, is easier to break again. Subconsciously you are not longer hoping for a win because you know it is possible, you have already done it. prior to that though there is always self-doubt of some degree, it's why clubs like to build a fortress at home and why players will talk about it to reinforce it when they can, Alderweireld has recently about White Hart Lane.

This weekend would be a good time to break that barrier.

Poch - I'm not going to get all Jose Mourinho about it

4:30 pm
Mauricio Pochettino id disappointed with the scheduling of the Capital One Cup Final but took it in his stride and suggested Mourinho would have complained but he won't be.

Poch - I'm not going to get all Jose Mourinho about it

In a clear bias towards Chelsea they have given the Stamford Bridge side a whole week to prepare for the tie and given Spurs just two days, one of which is a recovery day. It's a disgraceful piece of scheduling that gives Chelsea a massive advantage in preparing for the game.

There is simply no way Tottenham can put in the tactical preparation Chelsea will been given the time to do for the game, which for a final is a clear indication of who they want to win. Presumably they are going to appoint a Chelsea referee as well, perhaps Chris Foy who handed Manchester United the 2009 trophy by not sending off John O'Shea after 64 minutes with the score at 0-0, United went on to win on penalties.

“Maybe if Jose were in my position now they would be complaining about the situation!
"But I understand it is just football. It is not fair to play a final on the Sunday after you play in another ‘final’ in Florence on the Thursday. Chelsea play Burnley on the Saturday and then they have a clean week to prepare for the final.
“It is not fair but then we have to understand this is the competition. We are in the Europa League, the Capital One final and the Premier League. We need to understand that that’s football. It is not the best situation, but we need to prepare every game like a final because we have important games in the mean time.
“We have a very tough game against Arsenal and then Fiorentina here, then West Ham and Florence after that. Then the final. It is football, we need to accept that and be ready for every game.
“Maybe we will change the plan and stay in Florence after the game to try to recover better and train there on Friday morning because we need to recover quickly for the game on Sunday. But always it is difficult.
“It is no problem. We are strong. We believe in our way and will be sure to be ready for the final.”

The is no reason the Football League couldn't have scheduled the game, which takes place on March 1st for a week that Chelsea have a UEFA Champions League game to even things out slightly but that would have been the neutral thing to do and clearly they are not neutral.
