Spurs fans are letting Bill Nicholson down
United we stand, divided we fall...
How very true...
And yet our fans divide us.
They support part-time...
And seem oblivious to the consequences.
They want...
What they are rallying against...
Trophy success.
Nuts, right.
Fans complain when Spurs don't prioritise a trophy over league position.
And when Spurs do prioritise a trophy over league position...
Fans complain...
Protest...
Turn on the manager...
Turn on the players...
And have the audacity to call it support!
Clueless.
And they think they are not the problem.
They protest to be heard don't they?
Yet when you tell them the players can hear...
And it affects performance...
Then they turn again...
And tell you they have no effect!
Priceless.
You can't have it both ways.
If you can't be heard then why make noise?
The people who are not on social media...
The successful people at the club, like Daniel Levy...
Yes, he part owns the club...
He could afford it, you couldn't...
Are the people they are trying to talk to.
BUT...
It's the youngsters that are on social media...
The players...
With impressionable minds.
They hear the toxic negativity...
The Warzone of Negativity... (click the link for that article, it opens in a new window)
And science proves it affects their mentality...
Which affects performance...
And therefore results.
Fake fans.
Part-time 90-minute fans.
Fans of their own ego...
Not Tottenham Hotspur.
They change their opinion to whatever fits their edo-driven narrative.
Life's failures...
Trying to tell life's successful...
How to be a success!
Did you hear the interviewer after the Chelsea game...
Who was clearly quite happy with a 6-minute delay because it reached the right decision (in his eyes)?
He said at the end of the interview with Ange Postecohlou...
"Ange there is no agenda, I promise you."
Which means there is an agenda...
Otherwise, he wouldn't need to mention it.
Then at the pre-Eintracht Frankfurt game press conference, a reporter asks if Ange is trying to rid the club of the whipping boys tag.
That demonstrates the narrative the media have which is caused by negative fans constantly putting the club down on social media.
They create the narrative.
They create the rhetoric that others use against us.
Then they cheer for 90 minutes expecting everything to be the opposite of what they have created.
It's barmy...
And it's not a winning mentality.
The second question was about Brennan Johnson being frustrated about not raking the penalty for his hat-trick against Southampton.
More negativity.
"Turn gold into crap because its Tottenham Hotspur," Ange replies.
You could see his frustration...
But our negative fans are blind to the effects this has.
Ange goes on to talk about a winning mentality...
Showing the press and fans that they don't have one.
Third question and the reporter wants to still try and stir up division.
This is exactly what I have been talking about recently...
And this is caused by the social media narrative of so-called supporters.
Is this the frame of mind we need the coaches and players in ahead of an important game?
If you believe it is then you're not a supporter.
It's the 5th question before we get anything positive...
A question asking if positivity will help.
"Yes," is the first word Ange answers with before explaining further.
IF BILL WALKED BACK IN WHAT WOULD HE DO?
Reflecting on the legacy of Bill Nicholson...
Tottenham Hotspur's most celebrated manager...
Provides us with valuable insights into the current state of the club...
And its supporters.
Nicholson's philosophy was clear: (previous article opens in a new window)
"It is better to fail aiming high than to succeed aiming low. At Spurs, we set our sights very high, so that even failure will have in it an echo of glory." Source: National Football Museum
1. Emphasizing Unity and Support
Nicholson believed in the power of unity and collective support.
He understood that success on the pitch is deeply connected to the atmosphere created by the fans.
In today's context, this means fostering a positive environment both in the stands and on social media.
Negativity and division among supporters can seep into the team's morale, affecting performance and results.
As highlighted in recent discussions, toxic fan behaviour has tangible effects on the club's success.
The fans are letting Bill Nicholson down.
2. Advocating for a Winning Mentality
Nicholson's approach was not just about playing attractive football...
But instilling a winning mentality throughout the club.
Now who is the only person around regularly writing about that!
He emphasized that the game is about glory and doing things with style and flourish. T
his mindset requires resilience...
Belief...
And unwavering support from the fans...
Especially during challenging times.
3. Rejecting the Blame Culture
Blaming players...
Managers...
Or owners...
Was not part of Nicholson's ethos.
He focused on collective responsibility and continuous improvement.
Modern supporters can learn from this by moving away from negative scapegoating...
And instead contributing positively to the club's culture.
Constructive criticism is valuable...
But it should not overshadow the primary role of a supporter: to support.
Destructive criticism only helps our opposition.
4. Encouraging Patience and Long-Term Vision
Success does not come overnight.
Nicholson's tenure teaches us the importance of patience...
And having a long-term vision.
You are wrong...
That's right I can hear you already...
You are wrong...
The club DO have a long-term vision...
Hence why we have built a stadium...
And why we are investing in youth.
Constant managerial changes...
And short-term fixes...
Are less effective than building a stable foundation...
And allowing a cohesive strategy to develop.
Yet fans constantly call for change...
While complaining there is too much change!
Fans should be play a crucial role in this...
By maintaining faith in the process...
And resisting the urge for immediate gratification.
The THBN Wrap-Up
If Bill Nicholson were to return today...
He would likely advocate for a unified fanbase...
That embodies the principles of unwavering support...
A winning mentality...
Collective responsibility...
And patience.
By embracing these values...
Supporters can create an environment where the club can thrive...
Echoing Nicholson's vision of aiming high...
And pursuing glory with style.

Yes, the trophies are not filling the cupboards, but when you consider - as surely you must having raised the point - that the basis of footballing success nowadays has changed considerably from the latter years of the last century, you surely appreciate that even the club's survival depends so much more now on the finances that back it. The small group of clubs that can win trophies - even from time-to-time - is dwindling. Survival & thriving depend on continuous improvements - year on year.

They are still struggling. 4th as we speak, yet still many years away from showing they can do it reliably. So far nothing. That doesn't surprise me, I don't think it's reasonable to expect silverware so soon after a big reset. The expectation from the fans though is rarely reasonable; rarely considered based on a true understanding of how the football world works.

In the tough world of top-level football the "Kick 'em all out & start again from scratch" approach is almost guaranteed to fail. It's even extraordinarily hard to continue a winning formula (Liverpool 1 Man U & everyone else 0).
It saddens me to see so many can still be tempted by this lazy approach.
