Son Heung-min in the Asian Games Final

Son Heung-min is now one win away from being exempt from military service after South Korea Under-23'smade it through to the 18th Asian Games final.

The multi-sport event is being held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang. The football tournament takes place between 10 August and 1 September.
South Korea overcame Iran 2-0 in the last 16, Uzbekistan 4-3 in the quarter-finals and Vietnam 3-1 in the semifinals.

South Korea finished second in Group E to reach the knockout stages of the tournament, while Vietnam topped Group D.

Hwang U is the leading scorer at the tournament with 9 goals, his nearest rival has 4, there are 9 players tied on 4goals.

Japan and the United Arab Emirates contest the other semi-final. Japan finished second in Group D, while United Arab Emirates finished 3rd in Group C.

Anything can happen in a final, but surely South Korea have an excellent chance, in what is the last chance saloon for Sonny to avoid compulsory military service for 2 years.

Good luck Sonny, I'm sure all Spurs fans are rooting for you.

Son Heung-Min has now scored seven goals in nine matches against Borussia Dortmund, more than he has scored against any other side. He should have added to that tally when he found himself central with a good chance.

He turned inside a defender, only had the keeper to beat and ballooned it over the bar after a superb ball from kane, one of several on the night. In another he just didn't have enough pace to stay away from the defender who got back to block his shot.

Son scored our last goal against Dortmund when we played them in March 2016 in the Round of 16 in the Europa League. he scored our first last night.

Harry Kane has now scored in his last three Champions League games:
⚽️ vs. Monaco (France) ⚽️ vs. CSKA Moscow (Russia) ⚽️ vs. Borussia Dortmund (Germany)

Most goals scored across all competitions in 2017: Messi (39) Cavani (34) Lewandowski (30) Ronaldo (29) Kane (29)

The race for the UEFA Champions League Golden Boot has begun and Harry Kane is the joint leader with this group. All sit on 2 goals.

Son Heung-min breaks his arm

6:00 am

A blow for Tottenham Hotspur as Son Heung-min, who had a tremendous season for the club scoring more than 20 goals and winning over fans, has broken his arm playing for South Korea against Qatar.

Son had to leave the field after 35 minutes as South Korea lost their World Cup qualifier to future hosts. He has fractured his forearm the Korean Football Association (KFA) have confirmed.

Tottenham Hotspur start the season away from home for 20th time in the last 26 Premier League seasons. This time it is against Newcastle United. The odds of that happening for a random fixture generation system are surely far too high for this to be anything other than the Premier League requesting Spurs play away so Arsenal can play at home. Their usual bias continues.
Premier League matches post UEFA Champions League games next season 2017/18:

  • Swansea City (H)
  • Huddersfield Town (A)
  • Liverpool (H)
  • Crystal Palace (H)
  • WBA (H)
  • Stoke City (H)

Obviously these are just for the group stage games and we would be hoping this time to get through to the knockout stages.

Five home games and one away game isn't too bad, nor are the teams we have to play. We will still need to improve the strength in depth in the squad so we can use more players without reducing the quality too much.

The contribution of Son Heung-min in the last 12 games has been overshadowed

10 goals and 4 assists in the last 12 games

Son Heung-min arrived in his homeland, accompanied by Ben Davies, Kevin Wimmer and Kyle Walker and there were hundreds of people waiting to greet them at the Incheon International Airport in Seoul.

The four Spurs players are there for 2 days ahead of joining up with the rest of the squad who also received a huge welcome as they arrived in Hong Kong. The crowd waved flags, took photos and even sang a rendition of 'Oh when the Spurs go marching in."

Picture from Spurs Official Instagram account

The four were on a promotional trip to meet AIA staff and customers, naturally part of the shirt sponsorship deal we have with them. 24-year-old (25 in July) South Korean Son Heung-min scored 21 goals this season (14 goals, 9 assists in the Premier League), the most ever by an Asian player, and had a further 10 assists.

He scored 7 goals and had a further 3 assists in the last 10 Premier League games. In our last 12 games in all competitions (2 FA Cup ties), he scored 10 goals and had 4 assists, quite a contribution and one that is almost forgotten given Harry Kane banging in 7 goals in 2 games to claim thePremier League Golden Boot.

Son all alone

5:00 pm

As written before and during the international break, Tottenham have a problem up front in so much as we are having to levy on a tired Son Heung-min to lead our attack.

The South Koream usually arrives back to training a day after most of the squad due to the distance he has to travel and that means he has less preparation time for each game after the break. We will not be able to start him on the substitutes bench because Vincent Janssen pulled out of the Holland squad with an illness.

That naturally affects his preparation and he is highly unlikely to be ready or trusted to lead the attack at Burnley.

With Harry Kane still out we have had 721 injury  days, most of which have involved injuries to significant players, Kane twice, Alderweireld, Lloris, Vertonghen, Rose, not forgetting Lamela and Davies.

While other sides have had injuries, few could have had the significant injuries we have had and had to deal with. Credit must go to Pochettino and the boys for sitting in second place with those problems.

Turf Moor is a tough place to visit, as I pointed out in a recent article their home record matches Arsenal and they are the sixth best side in the country on their own patch, however, on a positive note Burnley haven't scored a Premier League goal in April at home since 17 April 2010.

Another stat: No side in Premier League history has won a higher proportion of their matches (83%) or total points (78%) at home than Burnley.

This game is no pushover but let's hope that run of not scoring continues and we can grab one or more ourselves.

No rest for Son Heung-min

8:00 pm

Son Heung-min played 90 minutes for South Korea in their 1-0 home victory over Syria at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. The game was part of the Asian section of the World Cup qualifying games.

The result sees South Korea remain in second place on 13 points in their group behind Iran who have 17 points and ahead of Uzbekistan in third on 12 points.

The journey time from Seoul to London is 12 hours and there are three flights a day. Son usually gets back to Tottenham a day after everyone else on Thursday and thus has less training time. We play Burnley on Saturday afternoon and with Harry Kane injured Son may well be pressed into service.

Vincent Jansen is an option, but he pulled out of the Holland squad with an illness so it isn't known yet whether he will be fit for Saturday afternoon or not.

Burnley are a tough nut to crack at Turf Moor, they are currently the 6th best team in the country on their own patch with 29 points gained from 9 victories, 2 draws and 3 losses. That is the same points tally as Arsenal.

Spurse could be in trouble after the international break if Kane is out

7:51 am

With Harry Kane picking up an injury in a game he didn't need to play in we have put our season in jeopardy. It is now fortunate we are no longer in the UEFA Europa League and if Kane is to miss games we will be needing Son Heung-min to play as a striker.

Kane left White Hart Lane yesterday on crutches and in a protective boot as a precaution and if swelling allows, will undergo a scan on his ankle to assess the damage. he twisted it, but are any of the ligaments damaged? If they are then Son Heung-min takes on a greater goal scoring responsibility.

he normally has to do a lot of travelling during the international break and needs a rest afterwards as he gets back late, but fortunately for us he is suspended and misses his countries trip to China on March 23. Son will still be named in the squad as they have a game in South Korea five days later.

Politics have entered sport again with the Chinese are being awkward and are not allowing the Korean's to fly a chartered aircraft into China. Whether Tottenham can arrange for Son to join up with the team in Korea and miss the trip to China altogether we'll have to wait and see, otherwise we could have problems away to Burnley on April 1st.

Son wins Goal of the Year Award

6:00 pm

Son Heung-min has been linked with French giants PSG although as yet there doesn't appear to be any strong interest. The French side may be changing managers soon with plenty of speculation in the press.

Goal of the Year

The Korean Football Association conducted a poll on its website and through social media. Over 27,000 fans took part and voted Son Heung-min's goal against Germany in the group stage of the 2016 Rio Olympics as Goal of the Year. In another of their polls he was also named as the Top Attacker of the Year. He received 53.9% of the votes.

Swansea City's South Korean captain, Ki Sung-yueng, was voted Top Midfielder of the Year.

Return to September Form

"I'm trying to get back to that level. I've had a few small injuries, only little things, but I'm very fit now and I'm getting fitter all the time. I've travelled a lot for international breaks in recent months and this can also make you tired, but I'm really happy to be here, getting fit and playing a lot of matches over the next few weeks. I'm really excited to work hard and hopefully I can help the team by scoring more goals."

Did players used to be tougher?

7:00 pm

Son Heung-min has spoken to reporters and confirmed what we have heard previously that he has been carrying an injury and playing through the pain. It is something you used to hear a lot of 20 years ago but rarely hear too much about today. Where players tougher then?

"I've been a bit unlucky with small injuries. I had a little bit of a small injury here and in the national team I also did. I'm really fine now and I'm just looking forward to scoring many and helping Spurs as much as possible.
"I was playing with a small injury but every footballer has small injuries. I think everyone is the same, but every footballer has pain or little injuries.
"I've also been travelling a lot with the national team. Now I can stay until maybe March to play here, training really well and recovering well and I think I feel fresher than in the last two months."

His goal against Swansea was his first in 11 games and hopefully now he is fitter we'll see more goals from him. He looks far more dangerous on the ball than Nacer Chadli used to be. You sense he can produce something special and he has on a few occasions, but you also fancy he will beat his man. he certainly gets to the byline more than many a player we have had playing wide.

Will Son Heung-min be rested against West Ham?

9:00 pm

Son Heung-min had a purple patch for Tottenham banging in the goals but has struggled for goals and shots since. He won the September Player of the Month Award after scoring 3 goals, but has failed to score since before the last international break, although he did score for his country.

The South Korean international has revealed that he has been playing with an ankle problem, just as Danny Rose and Kyle Walker have been playing with foot problems.

“It’s true that I’ve struggled after winning the award because of an ankle injury, but it’s not just me; the whole team is having a difficult time. With the national team, your strong mindset matters more than your form. I came here to win.”

Oh dear, it's that mindset some of our fans don't believe has any affect rearing its ugly head again, perhaps one day they'll get it. He played for South Korea during the international break and how fit he will be with all the travelling he has to do we will have to wait and see.

Usually he and Erik Lamela need a rest after an international break, but with Lamela being injured he has been able to rest and is expected to be fit. That could see Son on the bench for the West Ham game and a chance to give his ankle some much needed rest.

Perhaps his ankle injury is the reason he pulled out of a challenge we all thought he should have made against Petr Cech during the North London Derby.

Is Son one of Pochettino's concerns?

The Premier League Player of the Month for September is Son Heung-min, our wide attacker who has stepped up to the plate in the absence of target man Harry Kane.

He notched three goals and has been instrumental in our attacking play, helping from the front to keep us unbeaten. he is the first Asian player to win the Premier League EA Sports Player of the Month.

“This is my dream, to get the award. I want to get it a second time, a third time. When I take the award home my family will be crazy like you can’t believe. They will be really happy.
"To be the first Asian player to win it is very special because many Asian players have played in the Premier League before me. I’m the first player from Asia or South Korea to win and I can’t believe that, it makes me very happy."

Mauricio Pochettino mentioned there were a few issues with players returning from international duty but refused to name them. Before the international break, I detailed the travelling and time zone changes that Son Heung-min would have to go through during with South Korea, as well as playing in more sapping conditions than England.

I suspect he may well be one of the players that Pochettino was concerned about and may, perhaps along with Lamela, need a bit of a rest today.

Erik, give him his ball back

10:30 am
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino made light of the penalty squabble of Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min at the time, but his words did acknowledge that it was a problem that needed solving.

"It's difficult from the touchline to say 'no, you' because they're fighting and I cannot run to the middle of the pitch and say 'no, you'."

As Gary Neville said at the time, there would have been a designated penalty taker on the changing room wall so the embarrassing squabble shouldn't have taken place. Did it affect the penalty? It has to have done but a penalty should still be tucked away. It was weak, to near the goalkeeper, hit with no conviction and was at a nice height. Just as everyone can't be a goalkeeper Harry Kane, some can't be penalty takers. It is a pressure situation where you need to be mentally strong and therefore confident. poor penalties are from a lack of confidence.

Former Tottenham captain Steve Perryman, who lifted a few trophies for us, felt Mauricio Pochettino would sort it out and make sure it didn't happen again when he spoke to the Hertfordshire Mercury.

"The little bit of nonsense before the penalty, well if that's going to happen in a game that's 0-0 and they need to win and they make that same mistake, no-one is going to be to happy with it. So these problems sow themselves up and get solved and hopefully that wont happen again.
"I'm sure a penalty will be missed but without the fracas that led to that one. You've got to learn from what you're doing and I think they've got the manager that is a football nutter and spending time at it, and spends enough time at the training ground that all those things are being covered and talked about and shown and improved."

Son Heung-min continued his fine form with another goal to win us the tie against CSKA Moscow in the Russian capital which will do our growing South Korean fanbase and merchandising range no harm at all.

"I think it is key. It is very important that not only Harry, who was good before his injury and scored, that now another player has scored and that is very important for the team.
"I feel very pleased for Sonny. He is on fire and to keep this form is very important for us."

Mauricio Pochettino decided not to let him leave in the summer when he asked if he could feeling he had a lot more to give. That decision and the price tag we placed on him are being vindicated by him at the moment with 5 goals in 4 games and securing victories for us away to Stoke, away to Middlesbrough and now away to CSKA Moscow.

Spurs Korean fanbase on the rise

11:00 pm

There were Tottenham fans at the airport to great the team as they arrived in Moscow yesterday ahead of the game and in his pre-game press conference said the worldwide appeal of Tottenham did not surprise him.

“I was not surprised because of the magnitude of our club. We could see it at Wembley a few weeks ago when we played against Monaco in front of nearly 90,000 people. You can see the size of our club. It doesn’t surprise me that we have fans everywhere.”

Tottenham have a growing fanbase in South Korea and the impact Son Heung-min is having will only aid that. We have appointed Seoul-based brand management and licensing agent Infiniss to help us capitalise on that.

The agent will work in conjunction with Tottenham to appoint licensees for branded goods and accessories, including developing a bespoke Tottenham lifestyle clothing range which is expected to launch in Korea later this year.

Infiniss have in turn appointed a manufacturer to produce the clothing, SJ Trend, and it will focus the countries popular TV shopping channel market. Sports index Brandtix believe the brand value of Tottenham has grown by 5% as a result of last season.

Son Heung-min, the South Korean international and Asian Footballer of the Year, is leading that being the most talked about player as explained by Brandtix chief executive Jon Rosenblatt.

“It’s a smart move as football has a significant market in South Korea and Son has played a part in increasing Tottenham’s brand value there. It makes sense that Tottenham are focusing on South Korea. There are a lot of Premier League clubs looking at China with the expectation that it will permeate across the rest of Asia.”

Tottenham’s brand licensing manager, Gary Jacobson saw encouraging signs at the birth of this partnership.

“Infiniss has a proven track-record in this market, and the early addition of SJ Trend to our growing licensing portfolio in Far East Asia is an encouraging beginning to the partnership.”

Jason Lee, managing director of Infiniss was looking forward to product sales.

“We aim to work closely with Tottenham Hotspur to help it achieve its aim of bringing its Korean fanbase closer to the Club and to meet an increased demand for product in the region.”

Son attitude a problem

10:04 am

It will come as a surprise to Spurs fans and the Spurs squad that South Korean coach Uli Stielike is quoted by the Yonhap news agency as saying the attitude of Son Heung-min off the field must change.

Jan Vertonghem was only recently saying how everyone loved him and that off the field he had time for everyone, he was always happy, always smiling, simply great to have around the training ground.

Stielike is perhaps referring to the fact that Son and other players have shown disgust when being substituted for their country.

"As many people have already seen from the stands or on television, I think his behaviour away from the field can be problematic. Unless he gets his act together and changes his attitude, I will have to think about the rest of the team as the coach. All players have to be careful.

The reference to the stands and the TV audience suggests he is talking about at a game and off the field a reference to when not actually playing. Stielike is a strict disciplinarian and as such will believe that players have to set high standards of behaviour, they are after all representing their country and a role model for children.

Mauricio Pochettino has expressed himself very happy with Son and that it is an option that he plays as a lone striker. It's an example of how differently Pochettino sees his squad as to how fans see it. There is a very important game at the weekend, fortunately we are playing Tuesday so have plenty of rest time for the players to recuperate.

With that in mind it is likely that he will select a strong team tonight.
