Negative Positive

It seems that half the Internet has learnt a new word and we see it in headline after headline, you all know what it is so I shall refrain from even using it.

Negative Positive

Tottenham won 5-1 so before the main positive to take out of the game let's look at the main negative, the midfield. To get caught out by a simple chip over the top once is good play from the opposition but now as a midfielder you are aware of it.

From then on you try to ensure the same player doesn't get too many more chances to deliver the same type of ball that gets you into trouble. Lamela, Townsend, Capoue and Dembele, less so Harry Kane should be cutting the ball out at source, by that I mean they should be preventing their playmaker from playing it again by not giving him the time and space to do so.

He continued to play the ball on several occasions in the first-half and then after the break you expect them to do something about it but Spurs were lazy. We started the second half as if we had already won the game and didn't have to bother, the result is they had chance after chance after chance, but weren't good enough to take them.

It was a poor and lazy midfield performance defensively.

On the positive side I have said for several years we need to be clinical when we are 2-0 up, we need to learn to bury teams, to create and take the chances at the end of a game. Yesterday we did that thanks to Harry Kane.

Erik Lamela scored two superb goals but it was Harry Kane who sparkled. With Tottenham going nowhere again he popped up with another long range shot right into the corner. The two in the second half were exactly what we have been missing for years, someone finishing in the 6 yard box.

As soon as Dembele had a shot, Kane was following up for the rebound while everyone else was ball watching, that is the sign of a goalscorer. You often see Adebayor just standing watching and only when the keeper has spilled it does he react and follow up, by then it's too late.

His third, after his shot, was again a good goal for him as he found space and raised his arm for Fazio to see and side foot a nice cross for him to head home an easy goal. It was easy because he had found the room in the box.

Spectacular may stick in the mind of everyone but the positive was the clinical finishing.

Englisg Premier League Tottenham Hotspur entertain the surprise Greek package, Asteras Tripoli, who after 2 games top UEFA Europa League Group C with 4 points.

The Greek side drew away to Turkish side Besiktas before beating Serbian side Partizan Belgrade 2-0 at home. This is an important game for both sides, Tottenham need to win to start taking control of the group while a draw for Tripoli would consolidate their themselves in a decent position at the head of the group at the half way stage.

Pochettino selection dilemma

12:30 pm
Mauricio Pochettino has a bit of a selection dilemma tonight in what is now a must win game for Tottenham if we are not to make life difficult for ourselves.

Pochettino selection dilemma

We have played 2 games and only scored 1 goal, we haven't won thanks to a piece of ineptitude and sit third in the group with a tough away tie to finish in Turkey. We have to finish the group off before then. That means winning our next three games, the home and away fixtures against tonight's opponents Asteras Tripoli from Greece and the home tie with Partizan Belgrade.

Asteras Tripoli beat Partizan and drew away to Besiktas so surprisingly sit top of the group. What does Mauricio Pochettino do then, does he trust the misfiring second eleven, who sometimes look like strangers or does he sprinkle a few first team players in.

Hugo Lloris is likely to start in goal, he rescued us against Besiktas and our defending often means we need the best behind the team in goal. Tough on Michel Vorm but this is a must win tie.

Eric Dier is having to play every game at the moment thanks to injuries but we can not afford him to get injured with Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton both out. There is no other back-up so there has to be a case of asking Vlad Chiriches to play right-back. Against Besiktas however, Asteras Tripoli attacked mostly down the left side so a dependable right-back is needed. Much as every fan doesn't want to see Chiriches anywhere near the centre of our defence it is unlikely he will be deployed at right-back unfortunately. Eric Dier is likely to get the nod.

Federico Fazio is banned in the Premier League after the referee on Saturday gave Manchester City all the help he could. One of the two centre-backs will therefore be the summer signing from UEFA Europa League holders Sevilla. The other presumably is going to be Vlad Chiriches, although I'd play Vertonghen and move Chiriches to right-back myself.

Left-back picks itself, Ben Davies will continue to get used to life at Tottenham, he needs to start upping his game to become a realistic challenger to Danny Rose as at the moment he is a long way behind him.

With Nabil Bentaleb out injured, the two central defensive midfielder will presumably be Benjamin Stambouli and Mousa Dembele. Paulinho is so out of touch and this game so important having two centrally you can rely on is essential, the Frenchman and the Belgian provide that and are thus likely to get the nod.

The three in front of them is, as ever, the concern as this is where our creativity comes from. Aaron Lennon, Andros Townsend, Harry Kane and Paulinho have thus far been vying for three places with Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela on the bench if needed. That policy may well be the way to go although obviously there is an argument for playing both to win the game and then taking them off later.

It depends how much faith he has in his second team. Paulinho has been tried as a defensive midfielder, as an attacking central midfielder and as a wide attacking midfielder in this seasons UEFA Europa League and none has seen a half decent performance. Can he be trusted to put in a shift and if so where do you pick him?

It all revolves around who you put up front as the lone striker. Do you play Roberto Soldado or Emmanuel Adebayor, in which case Harry Kane would play the central attacking role or do you pick Kane as your lone striker in which case Paulinho would play as the central man behind him.

I'd be picking Emmanuel Adebayor up front with Harry Kane behind, meaning Townsend and Lennon play the wider roles with Paulinho on the bench. I'd probably side with:

Hugo Lloris
Vlad Chiriches Federicio Fazio Jan Vertonghen Ben Davies
Benjamin Stambouli Mousa Dembele
Andros Townsend Harry Kane Aaron Lennon
Emmanuel Adebayor

I think Mauricio Pochettino may side with:

Hugo Lloris
Eric Dier Federicio Fazio Vlad Chiriches Ben Davies
Benjamin Stambouli Mousa Dembele
Andros Townsend Paulinho Aaron Lennon
Harry Kane

Must win tie match preview, tough night

10:30 am
Thanks to the Vlad Chiriches factor this UEFA Europa League tie has become a must win game for Tottenham Hotspur.

Must win tie match preview, tough night

Greek side Asteras Tripoli currently top the group as you can see from the table below, the other game in the group is Partizan Belgrade vs Beşiktaş. A Beşiktaş win and an Asteras Tripoli win would leave us with a difficult task. It should be noted that Asteras Tripoli have already drawn 1-1 away to Beşiktaş, before beating Partizan Belgrade at home.

England Tottenham Hotspur20201102
Serbia Partizan201102−21

This is now a tight group and we can not afford another slip up. We play Asteras Tripoli tonight and then the away leg in our next game before our final home tie, then finish the group stages away to Turkish side Beşiktaş.

We need to tie up qualification and not be hanging on a result against the Turks who outplayed us at White hart Lane. We must therefore win the next three games to put this group to bed. What we need is the Greeks to come bearing gifts rather than welcome them with one.

Our only defeat in the Group stages of the UEFA Europa League was against a Greek side, PAOK in 2011/12. This Greek side in 7 away games have yet to record a victory away from home, they have drawn 4 and lost 3, never scoring more than 1 goal.

This is their third European campaign and it's the furthest they have been. They had to come through the second qualifying stage and are one of only 4 teams left from that stage of the competition, this will be their ninth game to our fifth.

The two clubs have a couple of connections, Márton Fülöp played for us from 2004 to 2007 and represented Asteras Tripoli from 2012 to 2013 while Vlad Chiricheş and Asteras's Dorin Goian have played together for Romania.

Asteras coach, 38-year-old Staikos Vergetis, was appointed in 2013 and is renowned as a good communicator. It helps that he  is fluent in several languages and has worked for the club as an interpreter, as well as a youth coach, match analyst and assistant coach. A serious knee injury prevented him having a playing career and the fact he was born in Tripoli only adds to his passion for them to do well. Being a former match analyst can only help him control the game from the sidelines.

Four draws in seven games suggests they are defensively organised and we know how we struggle against defensive organisation, an up and coming coach, this has all the hallmarks of being a tough night.

In the Greek league however Asteras Tripoli have lost 67% of their matches but we know European competition can bring out performances you don't expect, the 1-1 away draw with Beşiktaş for instance.

Their Greek league performances so far you can see below, Green = Win, Yellow = Draw and Pink = Lost.

People always talk about an early goal being important but it may be patience that is needed tonight. Against Beşiktaş they had 5 shots, 3 from open play and 61% of their attacking was down the right side. Four of their shots were from central (80%) and one from the right side, 3 of them (60%) were from inside the box and 2 (40%) were from outside the box.

Over half the game (52%) was played in the centre of the field with their defence being under pressure with the ball in the final third 23% of the time, they spent 24% of the time in their opponents final third. Beşiktaş managed 9 shots from open play and a further three from set pieces, 12 in total. Beşiktaş had 66% possession and an 87% pass success rate but managed only 2 shots on target out of the 12 attempts, 50% from outside the box.

Everything points to a very well organised defence hard to break down. They play a 4-3-3 system while Beşiktaş were playing a 4-2-3-1, the same as us. Their defensive midfielder 30-year-old Georgios Zisopoupos (number 13) was their man of the match, closely followed by their 27-year-old left-back, Athanasios Panteliadis (3) and their 30-year-old left centre-back Khalifa Papa Sankaré (15).

Perhaps our route to goal is through the left hand channel between the right-back and the right centre-back so it could be a game for Ben Davies to shine and whoever plays in front of him. Goals may come from that source.
