Brief Report on remaining players

3:00 pm
Of the remaining players Paulinho did little to advance his claims and looked an ordinary midfielder that you can find in any team in the country. He doesn't look anything like a £17 million player.

Harry Kane worked hard but he didn't come to terms with a bumpy and uneven itch. On such a surface when you have the chance to shoot you take it, attempting to cut inside gives the pitch the chance to have it's say and it did.

It would a good move around the outside to smash the ball against the bar in the opening minute and he linked well but couldn't find an end product.

Andros Townsend loves a blind alley and ran up as many as he could. He is just too interested in himself and having his own shots. Why then when he was given the ball in acres of space to run at goal and shoot did he go sideways across the pitch for someone to beat? He passed backwards and then ran into Aaron Lennon. How do you play with a player who does that, don't think anyone has figured that out.

He looked really unhappy to be subbed but it was hardly any wonder we looked more of a threat without him. He is not developing as yet.

Performance Reports
Hugo Lloris
Kyle Naughton
Federico Fazio
Jan Vertonghen
Ben Davies
Benjamin Stambouli

Roberto Soldado was lively when he came on and we looked a threat. His cross for Kane was superb, except Kane didn't try to head it for some reason. Soldado himself should have tried a header but went for a cross with his foot, unsuccessfully.

Aaron Lennon had to do as much defending as attacking. He switched with Townsend, made some runs forward but not quite picked out. One of his anonymous game where he does a job without doing much going forward.

Erik Lamela was on a different level to anyone else in midfield when he came on, suddenly thanks to his prompting we looked a threat and had a goal threat. He needs to carry the work he does in these games into the Premier League regularly. He always threatened to create something.

Etienne Capour had 19 minutes in which he gave the ball away in a dangerous area with Vetonghen having gone forward. Apart from that a competent 20 minutes but Stambouli looks a better player.

Nabil Bentaleb Performance Report

Nabil Bentaleb will always have his critics simply because Tim Sherwood picked him ahead of a disinterested Sandro. Regardless of what he does some will never see him as good enough even though he is only 19 and has less than a season's experience.

It says a lot about him that seeing him in the team for a tough tie with a new recruit alongside him and a new centre-back behind him, doesn't raise a eyebrow. His performance against Benfica away last year showed a maturity beyond his years so an atmosphere like this was never going to phase him.

He and Stambouli had good games doing the donkey work quietly and efficiently

First-half

14 mins Bentaleb plays an excellent long through ball for Lennon behind the defence but on the edge of the area with the keeper coming out the ball takes a high bounce and the chance is gone.

26 mins Bentaleb plays the ball to Paulinho who has a right foot shot from outside the area but the shot blocked.

28 mins Bentaleb breaks up play and two passes later Paulinho is attacking.

43 mins Poor pass from Bentaleb behind his man from the half-way line. A bit of confusion but Stambouli is covering and clears up the danger.

Half-time: A good solid performance with just the one error. Thanks to he and Stanbouli going about their work the central defenders are having little to deal with through the middle, a sure side the pair of them are doing their job. A 98% pass success for Bentaleb.

Second-half

Nothing of not to report, he again did a very efficient job going unseen by some, the mark of a good performance. Don't know why some people are only impressed with flashiness. He formed an excellent partnership with Stambouli and seems to adapt well to new players around him. The central defenders would have been happy with his nights work.

Again in this game he played a long through ball behind the defence to create a chance and these are becoming a feature of his game. He has a bit of growing and filling out to do, at the moment he is a wiry and fiery with determination and a cool head. The attributes are there to become an excellent player.

Benjamin Stambouli Performance Report

A good performance away from home in trying conditions. he was no doubt nervous having talked before about feeling like a kid with excitement. He looks a good player, strong in the tackle, a decent pass on him and an excellent buy. He and Fazio on this performance show that potentially there are some bargains to be had, both in a short time will be worth a lot more than we have paid for them with the exposure they are going to get.

Stambouli is going to be pushing for a Premier League start soon as he looks as if he is going to develop into a better player than Capoue, who is playing a restrained role as opposed to the box to box midfielder he started with us as. Stambouli came off after 71 minutes to be replaced by Capoue.

Like Fazio, Vetonghen and Bentaleb he had a good game without having to be noticed. Their was only one real error when Davies was up field he gave the ball away which could have put us in trouble but chased it down and an excellent sliding tackle put the ball out for a throw-in.

He will need to be careful in the Premier League with his sliding tackles, he does go in aggressively which is rather frowned upon today but it's good to have an aggressive ball winner who can then pass the ball quickly as well. He is an upgrade on Holtby, less running around everywhere and more end product.

First-half: Stambouli has had a good first-half winning a lot of ball in the centre and is accurate with his passes. A good addition to the squad.

Second-half

27 mins Plays the ball to Townsend who has a shot but it is blocked.

34 mins Stambouli gives it away with Davies stranded high up the field, but the central midfielder recovers with a good tackle.

43mins Bentaleb gives the ball away but Stambouli is covering and clears

53 mins Gives a free-kick away for a professional hand ball on the half way line allowing the team to get men back behind the ball.

63 mins Stambouli knocks an excellent first-time diagonal cross from 20 yards out on the back post. Soldado tries to bring id down and can't when it would probably have been simpler to go with his head.

71 mins Capoue replaces Stambouli

His awareness of what's around him was good, he was always available for a short pass, he moved into positions to receive the ball between players and moves the ball on well. Personally I thought at Sunderland and even more so here that we have picked up a bit of a bargain. He is unknown over here but is a lot better than people realise I think.

There were question marks how he would handle being away from home for the first time but he looks to be loving it. He spent the first part of the game winning a lot of the ball in midfield, being strong when staying on his feet.

Ben Davies Performance Report

The is no getting away from it Ben Davies was having a very tough night, which was made to look worse when he was taking corners from the right only for Partizan Belgrade to break down the left. He was consistently being beaten and has a problem because he is not quick which means when he goes forward and we lose the ball, he can't get back. That is a worry and a weakness teams will target.

He is still coming to terms with the system and how to play it, by that I mean he has to learn what he can do and what he can't do, how far he can go forward at what times and how quickly he can get back. He will need to rely on match practice and reading the game. He should not however be written off as some were doing on Twitter.

Leighton Baines used to be a poor defender but good going forward and it's only in the last couple of years that his defending has improved, Davies is going to have to learn the same way he did, trial and error. The important thing is to learn from the game, he won't have experienced too many like it in such an atmosphere, playing badly in such an atmosphere that is.

First-half

1 min Davies corner is flicked on by Vertonghen to Kane who rounds his man on the left and fires a shot against the underside of the bar but it comes out.

5 mins Davies and Lennon link up well to put Lennon in a crossing position from which the keeper gathers.

13 mins Townsend gives the ball away but Davies is covering and clears to ball to safety.

15 mins The ball is played over the top of Davies and Grbic is n down the right-hand side of the box. He feigns a shot but steps back inside and pulls the ball back to the waiting Lazovic. His shot is well blocked by Fazio.

16 mins Belgrade play the ball inside Davies who is wide on the line and Vulicevic is through on the right. Fazio has to come across to tackle. The ball is collected and passed to Vulicevic again who crosses for Lazovic. Fazio is again there to head away.

30 mins Grbic gets in behind Davies again and pulls a cross back for Sasa Illic to volley over. Davies was up field and simply couldn't get back, he isn't quick enough and these new ankle boots make everyone look like cart horses when they are not that bad.

35 mins Davies puts in a poor clearance but redeems himself by blocking the subsequent shot.

44 mins Davies takes a corner, the keeper catches and immediately sends a counter attack down the right resulting in a shot Lloris has to save.

Half-time: Davies has done some good work defensively but also been caught out far too often. Partizan are dragging him wide to the touchline and then playing the ball in behind him which he is struggling to cope with. The wide man plays the ball back and sets off for the return so Davies is always playing catch up, he has to anticipate and read the game better, realise what they are trying to do.

Second-half

48 mins Davies is holding Bebic's arm near the corner flag but and is slightly byline side of him so he turns nicely back inside and Davies has to bundle him over to stop him heading towards goal. A deserved yellow card and free-kick. The ball is crossed about 4 yards from goal waist high and makes it to the middle of the goal where Hugo Lloris dives forward and punches the cross clear.

50 mins Lazovic beats Davies but Fazio is aware of the danger and blocks the cross. From the clearance a long ball finds Lazovic he pulls it back for a left footed Grbic shot but he scuffs it and it rolls gently into Lloris's arms.

51 mins Davies does well holding up play with two players to mark and no midfielders rushing back to help.

53 mins Davies is pushing forward and plays a smart ball diagonally forward into Townsend's path that would see him have a clear central run at goal but Townsend can't collect it.

58 mins Davies passes the ball away down the line, pass isn't anywhere near a Spurs player but Vetonghen covers the danger.

61 mins Long ball see Davies, as last man centrally, slice the ball. Lloris is smartly out to the right to prevent the corner and put the ball out for a throw under pressure. From the throw the ball is whipped in from the right. Davies ensures his man is offside but Lloris doesn't know that and dives at Lazovic to make a smart save.

72 mins A diagonal ball from deep (regular tactic) finds Grbic in space on the right. Davies gets back quickly and blocks cross behind from a corner. The ball comes in and after a scramble breaks to Petrovic on the left who fires high and wide.

74 mins Petrovic crosses from deep, wide on the left. Davies tries to clear with his right foot but it goes straight to Sasa Ilic on the edge of the area. Fortunately he puts it miles over.

77 mins A through ball finds Grbic, on the right who has run to the byline past Davies. Cuts a sharp cross back cross for Ilic, but his header from 10 yards is poor and flies over.

Davies stuck to his task while getting worked over. He suffered the same problems Danny Rose was suffering last season, diagonal balls and the ball inside him for the wide man to run on to. His concentration was good, he was the last man covering centrally on several occasions and dealt with everything is not perfectly, he stepped up to play his man offside showing a clear head.

There was no panic to his play even though he wasn't having a good game and we were at times under pressure. He got forward to support the attack and played a couple of nice first time passes again showing awareness of team mates around him. Plenty to work on. The immediate future will see a League Cup tie and then another UEFA Europa League tie so a game a week for the next few weeks.

Jan Vertonghen Performance Report

Jan Vertonghen had a good solid game in difficult conditions and with a new centre-back partner. He has not played much with Ben Davies either so there was the potential for a banana skin but he and Fazio looked as if they had regularly played together and the pairing did much to ensure we came away with a point without being spectacular.

First-half

1 min Vertonghen has a left footed shot from 14 yards out as we immediately attack and it goes for the first corner after 35 seconds.

1 min Davies corner is flicked on by Vertonghen to Kane who rounds his man on the left and fires a shot against the underside of the bar but it comes out.

3 mins Grbic goes down the right but the cross is too high. Volkov collects it and is wrestled to ground by Andros Townsend. A good free kick from Drincic wide on the left and Vertonghen makes a powerful header clear.

10 mins Skuletic is tripped up by Vertonghen, nothing comes of the free-kick

12 mins Naughton goes down the right to the byline and crosses towards Kane but the ball is poorly cleared. It falls to Vertonghen who runs at the edge of the box and retains possession and passes to Townsend who cuts inside and attempts a curling shot that makes a yard into the defenders chest.

25 mins Pantic turns down the left side to beat Naughton but Townsend is there to dispossess him knocking it out for a throw. The ball is thrown long into the box and Fazio darts in front of his man but misses the leaving Lazovic unmarked. Vertonghen lunges in front of him as he turns and shoots from six yards. Lloris is forced to make an excellent block and Bentaleb lunges in a sliding tackle to hook the ball clear.

Little to report of Jan for the rest of the game. He didn't have to do anything outstanding just general defensive work, a lot of covering in areas blocking crosses and preventing any clear cut chances for the strikers. He has an efficient game and like other players one of those good games where you perhaps don't notice a player that much because it's efficient rather than eye catching. Efficient is far more important and you would happily give him Fazio and Naughton 7.5 or 8 marks each.

The fact that Davies was regularly beaten, there was danger from the right and yet no real clear cut chances tells you everything about the competent defending of the other three in the back line.

Federico Fazio Performance Report

A tough opening encounter for summer signing Fazio who captained Sevilla to lift this trophy last season. A noisy crowd created an atmosphere and the pitch was terrible so mistakes could easily happen. Experience and composure saw him make a decent debut with only one glaring error.

He is happy with the ball at his feet, doesn't rush, came out of defence when he saw an opportunity. His lack of pace may be a problem but apart from that looks a useful buy.

First-half

His game started with the first 15 minutes seeing him comfortable with the ball at his feet, he was very aware and played the right passes, which he was quite happy to wait for. He would see one option, decide it wasn't right turn and play another.

18 mins Fazio bundles Lazovic over near the right touchline to give away a free-kick. It's poor though and is easily cleared.

36 mins Partizan win a corner down the right and a dangerous cross is headed out very well by Fazio.

37 mins Fazio rushes forward to intercept a ball knocking it forward and rushes after it just beating Pertizan player to the ball and get knocked out his stride as he chases the ball again. Free-kick.

Half-time: A very solid start by Fazio who looks to have settled in easily which is the sign of a good intelligent player. Just the one missed header from a misjudgement causing us problems.

Second-half

47 mins Fazio heads clear and Vulicevic hits the ball on the half volley from 35 yards but it's a very poor weak effort way wide of goal.

50 mins Lazovic beats Davies but Fazio is aware of the danger and blocks the cross. From the clearance a long ball finds Lazovic he pulls it back for a left footed Grbic shot but he scuffs it and it rolls gently into Lloris's arms.

There is little to talk about for the remainder of his game, didn't do anything wrong, worked well with Vertonghen and the back line, had no problems with Naughton and covered for Davies as well at times. A highly encouraging debut, he looks a good buy, definitely an upgrade on Dawson and more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Kyle Naughton Performance Report

Kyle Naughton had a decent game on his return, he got forward but frequently didn't receive the ball, he however covered his defensive position well. It was one of those performances that you perhaps don't notice.

First-half

7 mins Naughton overlapped but the through ball from Paulinho was too slow to put him in.

12 mins Naughton goes down the right to the byline and crosses towards Kane but the ball is cleared.

18 mins Partizan Belgrade have a free-kick on the left taken by Drincic which Naughton heads away.

22 mins A good chip puts Naughton in behind the defence again but his cross loops over Harry Kane at the back post.

43 mins After Townsend had collected a pass and turned in space with 10 yards in front of him he inexplicably ran sideways instead and passed backwards. While Townsend then runs into Aaron Lennon the ball moves to Naughton who crosses from the right. It takes a deflection however and loops comfortable in the air for the keeper to easily catch the ball.

Half-time: Naughton has had a good first half supporting the attack and getting down the right frequently. He has got in behind the defence twice and but for a poor pass could have been through in a dangerous area. He has only been slipped past once in defence and has been solid.

Second-half

67 mins A through ball from Branko Ilic puts Lazovic through but he delays his shot and Naughton gets across to put in a tackle that the ref awards a corner for even though it should be a goal kick. The corner is cleared easily.

While Partizan Belgrade had a sustained spell of pressure at the beginning of the second-half Naughton didn't really have to do anything of note. he did his defending well and they were rarely a threat from his area. He also kept getting up the field well to offer support to our attacks and provide width when he could. He had one of those good games where he is efficient and you don't notice him.

Hugo Lloris Performance Report

Venue: Partizan Stadium, Belgrade, Serbia (UEFA Category 3 Stadium)

Hugo Lloris had a good game, he was kept reasonably busy without having to make too many saves from shots but Partizan Belgrade were a permanent threat. He was the captain for the night in the absence of Kaboul and Emmanuel Adebayor in a noisy atmosphere for the whole game.

Hugo Lloris Report

First-half

25 mins Pantic turns down the left side to beat Naughton but Townsend is there to dispossess him knocking it out for a throw. The ball is thrown long into the box and Fazio darts in front of his man but misses the leaving Lazovic unmarked. Vertonghen lunges in front of him as he turns and shoots from six yards. Lloris is forced to make an excellent block and Bentaleb lunges in a sliding tackle to hook the ball clear.

30 mins Lloris watches the ball sail over the bar from Sasa Ilic

44 mins Straight from a Ben Davies corner the keeper catches the ball and sends a counter attack down the right which results in a shot Lloris has to save comfortable falling across gal to his right.

Half-time: A comfortable first-half for Hugo Lloris, he had a bit more pressure to deal with in the second half as Partizan Belgrade started it on the front foot.

Second-half

48 mins Ben Davies is beaten near the corner flag and has to pull down his opponent for a free-kick receiving a yellow card for his troubles.

72 mins Has to watch a shot from Petrovic in the left channel sail high and wide.

77 mins A through ball finds Grbic in the right channel and he cuts back a cross from the byline for Ilic. His header isn't good enough and sails over from 10 yards.

87 mins Drincic takes a sot from 30 yards but it way wide.

There was plenty of activity in the last third to keep Lloris concentrating even if he wasn't called on to make too many saves. The important thing is he retains his concentration and in many instances he receives the ball back to pass the ball out again keeping him in the game.

Concentration when he needed it, saves when we needed them, a good performance.

Pochettino looking to give Veljkovic game time

8:30 am
Mauricio Pochettino gave a press conference yesterday where he indicated he would like to give young Serbian centre-back Milos Veljkovic some game time against his countrymen.

Pochettino looking to give Veljkovic game time

He has spoken with Veljkovic and used his local knowledge to help prepare for the game.
"We used his information to our benefit. Milos is a young and very good player and maybe he will have the chance to play tomorrow.
"It is normal that he has information about Belgrade from his team-mates in the national team, he knows about the club and history. We use it - not too much - but we use it."

Pochettino has also spoken with Branko Brnovic. The Montenegro national coach played in the same Espanyol team as Pochettino and is a former Partizan Belgrade player who was able to give him first hand knowledge of playing conditions and the atmosphere Spurs are likely to face. You use what contacts you have in these situations to get as much information as possible about your opponents.

Veljkovic is looking forward to going back to Serbia to play instead of a summer holiday. Both he and the the young Partizan Belgrade players can't wait for this game and it was all they talked about when they met to play for Serbia U21's during the international break, as Veljkovic told the clubs website.

"Nemanja and Andrija are very good young players and I know they are very important to Partizan. I was speaking to them last week and they are looking forward to this game. Partizan is a great club in Serbia, they have a strong support and have been champions on many occasions.

"Partizan and Red Star Belgrade are especially strong at home. They are always in the Champions League and that shows their quality. It will be a big challenge for us. I go to Serbia every summer for the holidays and I’m looking forward to this one."

If the game is going according to plan Pochettino will be looking to bring him off the bench, it'll be a chance for him to see how the youngster handles the pressure of playing in his home country.

Little hurdles like these are great experience for a young player making his way in the game and he'll be able to draw on that experience when he is called upon next time in a pressure situation.

Apart from the year Jermain Defoe was banging in the European goals we have tended to struggle away from home in the Europa League and been pleased to come away with draws. Against AEL Limassol in the last away game we didn't look like scoring until Erik Lamela came on and turned the game on it's head.

The shadow squad have to step up on that performance if they want to force their way into the Premier League starting eleven. Players like Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend look destined for a season on the sidelines so this is their opportunity in a tough away game, rather than an easier game at White Hart Lane, that they have to show they have more to offer.

That does not mean trying to do everything yourself but playing your part within a system. Follow the coaches instructions and he'll notice, you role is to excel within that. For someone like Lennon, who may well find himself on the left, it's about interchanging positions, can he pop up everywhere the way Nacer Chadli is doing.

His attribute is speed and we have seen him running along the defensive line looking for a through ball to run on to, but few passes have been good enough to date. If Paulinho is playing as the attacking midfielder he needs to be looking for those potential balls as does Andros Townsend, assuming he starts on the right.

In all honesty though do you see Townsend playing those sort of balls? I don't yet they would be better for the team and for him than simply cutting inside to have a shot himself. The system we play is all about the team and not the individual. It does mean that Townsend has to be continually looking around, continually aware of where everyone is, which although it sound obvious, studies have shown players don't do enough.

Paulinho is another who has to step up considerably on the poor performance he put in at White Hart Lane against AEL. In the first half he was anonymous and only provided an assist to Kane because the opposition virtually passed him the ball with only 1 defender to stop the pair. Pochettino was throwing his arms in the air annoyed when we scored, not celebrating, clearly he was frustrated at what he was seeing and I think a lot of that was about the Brazilian.

A half-time team talk saw the side come out and immediately press for 4 minutes not allowing AEL out of their own half. During that time we lost the ball 3 times and won it back 3 times. Chiriches gave the ball away, chased it, made the tackle to poke the ball for Paulinho to slip past his man and score.

It is a test tomorrow that Pochettino will want to see some of these players stepping up their game.

Thursday is causing team selection problems

6:50 pm
We can now all look forward to Thursday and the UEFA Europa League and while some see it as a distraction surely at the moment with our squad it's rather essential. Players need to play and we have quite a few who need a weekly game.

Saturday 20th - Premier League - Burnley 3pm (h)
Friday 26th - Premier League - Leicester City 3pm (a)
Sunday 28th - Premier League - Manchester United 3pm (h)

That's a total of 23 matches this year of which 15 are Premier League games and 6 of those are in December, with just 3 in October. There are also 2 further international breaks.

The shadow squad looked lost in Cyprus playing against AEL Limassol and had to be rescued by Erik Lamela. They need games are therefore they need to be playing together each week, there are 8 potential games with 2 international breaks where many will be playing as well. I know in the past it hasn't really worked playing a total second team but in the Group stages, in games we should win, having faith and sticking with them should be OK. They are a better second team than we have had in the past probably.

Thursday has become essential to give players games, but it has also caused a problem. How do you transfer a player from one squad to the other. If they play a full game on Thursday they are not at optimum fitness for Sunday and we have seen how that affects results.

Players like Federico Fazio will surely have to come into the Premier League central defence, it's still the weakest area of the team at the moment, which cost us points again at the weekend. The free-kick, which Capoue should never have given away in the first place, should then have been cleared by Kaboul or Chiriches but one watched it and the other had let his man get goal side of him. Fazio and Vertonghen are desperately needed as the central defensive pairing leaving Kaboul and Chiriches free for the Europa League.

If you introduce Fazio Thursday though, can you give him a full game, do you play him Thursday and Sunday or do you retain Kaboul and simply delay the problem, which should never be an option.

And what about Stambouli. Has he been bought as a first choice defensive midfield or a squad player to add to our depth in that area. Mousa Dembele surely cemented his place and Capoue, despite his two small mistakes in both goals, looks booked in the other spot at the moment.

Presumably Stambouli will be given a run out alongside Nabil Bentaleb, who returned from international duty late on Thursday. The front four are understudies at the moment, although Roberto Soldado would take over from Harry Kane is he were fit, which in itself causes another problem.

Does Harry Kane then replace Paulinho. Kane has scored goals and created goals so far. He needs to be developed and the Europa League provides an ideal vehicle for him to play, I'd suggest he has to be in the team for that reason.

What then happens to Paulinho, defensive midfield, but at the expense of who. Bentaleb like Kane has to be developed so he has to either play in these games or the Premier League and after Dembele's performance it will surely be a spell on the sidelines, unless he takes Capoue's place and that may be earmarked for Stambouli.

There is certainly plenty for Pochettino to ponder.
