Spurs sit 3rd in corner charts, our achilles heel is getting better

6:30 pm

CRYSTAL PALACE vs SPURS

Our achilles heel last season was set pieces and so perhaps a factor in our defensive record this season is the number of corners we concede. You'll remember we set a new Premier league record for the amount of time we went without conceding a goal from open play.

Tottenham Hotspur
Played: 32
Corners For: 226
Corners Against: 117

Only Manchester City (232) and Liverpool (232 but in 2 games more) have had more corners than us this season. Man City average 7.25 per game where we average 7.05 per game, Liverpool 6.82 per game. We concede 3.66 per game.

Crystal Palace have played 33 games, had 174 corners for them and 189 against. They average 5.93 per game and concede on average 5.73 per game.

The odds on us having more than 4.5 corners tonight is 1.3
The odds on us having more than 6.5 corners tonight is Evs
The odds on us winning the corners match bet are 1.44
The odds on over 8.5 corners per game are 1.35

Spurs lead the PL for shots and shots on target

5:35 pm

CRYSTAL PALACE vs SPURS

Tottenham leads the Premier League for shots on target with 204 (6.83 per game) and we concede only 90 (2.81 per game). Manchester City and Chelsea have both conceded 88 (2.75 per game) and Manchester United 86 (2.69 per game).

Crystal Palace are down in 13th125 shots on target (3.79 per game) and conceding 156 (4.73 per game).

We have taken more shots than anyone else, 561 (17.53 per game), conceding 287 (8.97 per game). Man City have conceded 257 (8.03 per game), Liverpool 275 (8.09 per game), Chelsea 273 (8.53) and Manchester United 281 (8.78 per game). That suggests we still have work to do on our defence and that it can be improved.

If you bear in mind we are top of the league for shots and shots on target and see Chelsea have had 455 shots (7th best, average 14.22 per game) scoring one more goal than us and Liverpool 558 shots in 2 games more (3rd best, average 16.41 per game) scoring 2 more goals than us you could make a case for arguing we still can improve our finishing and be more clinical. We were certainly given a demonstration of that at the weekend

Crystal Palace have had 394 shots (10th best, average 11.94 per game) and have conceded 446 (13.52 per game).

APOLOGIES - My eye sight has made an error with the Chelsea stats, they have scored 65 goals (2.03 per game).

Video: Sky innovation needs tweaking

SPURS 1 PALACE 0

I thought Phil Thompson was going to fall asleep when giving his Match Verdict, a new offering from Sky Sports it seems. I tend to miss these things watching the games and switching off after. A check of the scores, a check of the league table, a check of scores in the UK and Europe, a check of the horse racing results and move on.

Far better to have one's own opinions that take on those of the media, especially when all they are really telling us it what we can see for ourselves. If Sky want to persist with this new innovation then it needs to come with edits of the game so the viewer can see what he is talking about, otherwise it is all pretty meaningless.

I'm all for bringing us something different, but that doesn't mean it then can't be improved upon with tweaking. If Thompson looked as if he was enjoying it, it might help. Enjoyment is infectious so it is an emotion he should be conveying.

Video: Plenty of positives for Pochettino

11:00 pm

SPURS 1 CRYSTAL PALACE 0

A win against a team we find difficult to break down, as Mauricio Pochetino admitted in his post-match interview, which you can watch in the video blow.

he spoke about how well Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama have settled at Spurs, so much so that they look like they have been here for years. He felt Wanyama scoring was good for the fans to bond with him and feels that both players can feel the love of the Spurs faithful.

While Wanyama has experience of the Premier League, Janssen doesn't, he is stepping up a level of football. His performances do show though that if you approach things with the right frame of mind and remain positive you do not have to have a season to adjust, you should be able to make your mark. He doesn't look out of place at this level and he will just need a goal now to settle him, as will Harry Kane of course.

last week Janssen came on against Everton, caught the eye and got a starting berth this week. That is exactly what players and youngsters need to do. Dele Alli came on and immediately played a first-time ball to create a golden chance for Janssen that he should have scored.

Josh Onomah is developing physically as well as a player and he didn't look out of place or lightweight either. There was a nice piece of defensive work down near the right-hand corner flag. Moments like that build the confidence. It doesn't have to be a flashy piece of skill that catches the eye or a telling pass, it can be a defensive contribution or simply helping to keep the flow of the team moving.

A youngster coming on and not visibly weakening the side is a plus as all eyes are on them, the pressure is on them. They have to learn to handle that pressure, the crowds expectation, let alone what the manager wants and what they feel themselves. It si a big ask and Onomah doesn't seem fazed by the challenge.

Video: Lamela gave Townsend a lesson and a nutmeg

5:00 pm

SPURS vs CRYSTAL PALACE

I talked before and during the game about the difference between Erik Lamela and Andros Townsend and how Lamela was showing Townsend what he should have been doing at Tottenham instead of complaining. The mental attitude is key, at the moment Townsend is looking an ordinary player.

If he wants to move up a level he has to work on his mentality, he has shown, even while sitting on a substitutes bench, th mentality of someone who is not a winner, someone who will only try when he feels like it and doesn't see the day to day stuff as important.

Those who remember will recall me writing an article on how a substitute should not only be watching his team, but should be studying his potential opponent, or opponents. He should know what he is going to do in given situations, he will have been briefed before hand and shown videos of course, but he is a chance to bring yourself mentally up to speed with the game and your opponent on the day.

You should be coming onto the field totally prepared having done your homework on the bench, not sat watching the game as a spectator. Townsend used to warm up with more interest in what was going on in the crowd than the game. Then when he did come on he had to start to mentally adjust to the game so rarely made any sort of impact or positive contribution. That is solely a mental issue.

Erik Lamela was tackling back yesterday and was superb in defence, quite apart from his attacking skills, Townsend went to sleep and let Danny Rose run round him for a chance in the first-half, Rose unfortunately didn't shoot.

Spurs fans then delighted in and complained about Match of th Day not showing the Argentinian's nutmeg of the former Spurs winger. The crowd loved it and if you replay it, watch the players reaction in the background. It's Danny Rose and upon seeing it he puts his hands on his head in looking in awe at the spectacle.

Video Highlights Spurs vs Crystal Palace

SPURS vs CRYSTAL PALACE

A decent performance without being anything special. Vertonghen looked fitter and had a good game, Kyle Walker was probably Man of the Match for me, he was mopping up everything in defence, making tackles, interceptions, getting us out of trouble or simply showing awareness in chesting the ball back to Michel Vorm.

Vincent Janssen fluffed his lines in Soldado fashion when he had his chance but apart from that showed the qualities some were saying he didn't possess, pace and close control when the ball is played forward to him. As with any new signing he will need a goal to settle him. If you watch the highlights and stop them at 3.34 minutes which is the replay of our goal.

Don't watch the play, just watch Janssen to the left of Wanyama and you'll see him slip from one side of his marker to goalside in anticipation of Kane heading the ball into a danger area. He did and Wanyama was there to head it in but Janssen had lost his marker and was lurking. he was showing all the instincts of a striker, anticipation rather than just reacting to what happens, that augurs well.

Dele Alli got some more game time into his legs and played a superb first-time through ball for the Janssen chance when he replaced the disappointing Eriksen.

A win was important today and that was achieved despite plenty of improvement needed. We scored from a corner but we continue to look at though we should do better. Alderweireld had a free header that he put straight at the keeper, then Wanyama put one over (tough one), Alderweireld put one wide and Dier missed the target.

At the other end, Eric Dier seems to be becoming more commanding in the air. He was in the way of Everton last week, first knocking the ball out for a corner, then heading that away, then heading the next corner away and this week he was aerially strong again. He and Wanyams kept getting in each others way, by which I mean they were taking each others space.

No side is a finished article at this time of year, especially clubs in Europe who ease their way into a season, hoping to win as they do. It makes games difficult whoever the opposition are so a win is a satisfactory result, it puts us at the right end of the table. We need a win next week to cement a decent start.

Lamela showing Townsend why he had to leave Spurs

Spurs vs Palace

With Hugo Lloris injured, Vorm took over in goal and 20-year-old Luke NcGee who trains regularly with the main two keepers and acted as back-up to them last season.

Dele Alli was dropped after looking rusty and Vincent Janssen drafted in after the impact he made at Everton last week coming on for the final 27 minutes. Harry Kane took the captain's armband.

Vorm
Walker Alderweireld Vertonghen Rose
Dier Wanyama
Lamela Kane (c) Eriksen
Janssen

Subs: McGee, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Alli, Carroll, Mason, Onomah

The first half showed what I was talking about before the game regarding Townsend and Lamela. Andros Townsend went to sleep in defence and Danny Rose ran round the outside unmarked into the box and receiving the ball he should have had a shot but instead tried tyo beat one more player, which wouldn't have done him any good anyway.

At the other end Lemela was trackiong back and tackling Townsend or anyone else trying to make advances up our left flank. He commitment to his f=defensive work was an example to Townsend of what you need to do and an example of why Townsend couldn't get into the team, eventually being sold.

Christian Eriksen was a disappointment in the first half too. He lost control when we quickly counter attacked and had them outnumbered. A simple ball to Kane and we could easily have gone in front. The same thing was happening last season in these situations and it is an area we need to improve upon. Eriksen could easily have put Walker in overlapping but he chose a cross that didn't beat the first man. He's not on song yet.

We could have been leading at half-time but we are not. Errors of judgementa nd not clinical enough in the final third. Janssen once again looks a quality player and he has the work ethic of Lamela it seems, an excellent addition to our squad. Wanyama, as expected, is putting last seaso's half-hearted performances for Southampton behind him.

Now we need to put this game to bed.

Son Heung-min has amassed over 50 international caps at the tender age of 23 and has a wealth of experience despite his age. He left South Korea to pursue a footballing career in Germany while still a youth and worked his way from academy to Bundesliga star.

He has slotted in well at Tottenham and has some excellent close control as you can see from the video of his game against Crystal Palace yesterday.
