Yep that's right folks, he has only been a striker for 3 years and has only had one season in

At 14, he started with Brazilian club Goiás (10th in Série A last season) as a central defender in 2009.

A bit of background to Brazilian football for you from Wikipedia.

The Brazilian football league system is a series of interconnected leagues. It consists of several independent pyramids, which are the national pyramid and state pyramids. Clubs usually compete in both pyramids in the same year (a state and a national one).

The national pyramid has four leagues, Série A, Série B, Série C and Série D which start in May and end in December.

National Championships - Level 1 - Campeonato Brasileiro Série A (20 clubs) Bottom 4 teams relegated

National Championships - Level 2 - Campeonato Brasileiro Série B (20 clubs) Top 4 teams promoted, bottom 4 teams relegated

National Championships - Level 3 - Campeonato Brasileiro Série C (20 clubs divided in 2 groups of 10) Top 2 teams of Second stage groups promoted, bottom 2 teams of each group relegated

National Championships - Level 4 - Campeonato Brasileiro Série D (68 clubs) Preliminary round with 8 clubs, then 64 clubs divided in 8 groups of 8
Semi-finalists promoted - No relegation

Are you following all this, complicated, below this are the State Championships.

Don't say I don't educate you, mind you I did that to teach myself.

Carlos Vinícius (remember him) joined Santos (currently Série A) in 2011 being loaned out to Desportivo Brazil (currently Campeonato Paulista Série A3, 3rd tier São Paulo state football league).

He was released in 2014 and joined Palmeiras (currently Campeonato Paulista, São Paulo's state premier league and Brasileirão Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system).

He moved to Caldense (Série D, 4th tier of the Brazilian football league system and the Campeonato Mineiro, the top tier of the Minas Gerais state football league) in 2016 making his debut as a defensive midfielder.

In May 2017, Carlos Vinícius joined Grêmio Anápolis (Goiano state, 1 Divisão) for whom he played twice, once as an attacking-midfielder and once as an attacker in a friendly scoring 2 goals.

He was spotted by scouts from Portugal, went to Real FC (LigaPro - Portuguese 2nd division) on a one-year loan deal and scored on his debut.

He scored a hat-trick on his LigaPro debut and ended the season with 20 goals and 5 assists in 38 games.

In January 2018 he signed for Napoli for around €4 million, scoring in his pre-season friendly debut.

He then got loaned out (one-year) to Rio Ave in the Portuguese top flight and scored 14 goals in 20 matches.

Monaco was the next loan spell (6-months), but was mainly used as a sub (3 starts) scoring 2 goals and had 2 assists in 16 games (511 minutes, equivalent to 5.6 full games).

Benfica bought him in July 2019 for €17m with a release clause of €100m.

He scored on his debut again and has now scored 29 goals with 1 assists in 49 games for them.
