Spurs Summer Transfer Window Day 76

Spurs Summer Transfer Window Day 76

I lose track of the days, what is it Wednesday, 5am, time for the second cuppa and a spot of Welsh Rarebit, that's cheese on toast to you heathens, before we start researching for tomorrow, but today it's Spurs Summer Transfer Window Day 76.

Exclusive Spurs Chat

There has been a clear improvement in our set piece play and a part of that is the second phase, if a corner is cleared back wide then another opportunity to put a cross in is effectively the same as a set piece.

On those set pieces, I'd really like to know, from a corner, what would happen if we put nobody in the box against a team who man mark at corners.

What would the defence do if all our runners started from outside the box?

The keeper would be braver perhaps, but what would evolve?

It's the defending though that I wanted to speak about.

What we need is an analysist to study movement when defending corners in an effort to improve our zonal marking.

Giovani Vio looks to make a difference attacking wise but like American Football there is room for a defensive co-ordinator to work on set-pieces as well as a throw-in coach.

My suggestion for vision training, which is effectively training the brain to think differently, should take place right through the age groups so we end up with players who are more aware of their surroundings on the pitch.

Collins lost Kane for our set piece routine corner because he was ball watching, probably his one mistake in the game.

Mind you, we have seen goals scored because defenders only have eyes for a player and not the ball, it's a balancing act.

Vision training is about knowing where everyone is on the field and what passes you instantly have available to you should you receive the ball.

You should have a picture in your head, hence why I say have everyone close their eyes and stop during a training game, then everyone but one player opens their eyes.

The one player with their eyes shut points to where his players are, the opposition players are, describes what passes he can play and what his options are should he receive the ball.

That picture should constantly be in his head, ever changing.

That gives you advance warning of where to position your body in relation to the oncoming ball, perhaps how to shield it, already knowing how you are going to evade the man marking you.

Still we can't do everything at once, nothing wrong with plans for the future and a research and development team studying every aspect of the football operation to seek innovative improvements, much like Monchi has instigated at LaLiga side Sevilla.

Player Sponsorship

Player Sponsorship

Gareth Bale had many sponsorship deals that were linked to him being a Real Madrid player, thus making it very difficult for him to leave, just another reason why he dug his heels in.

Son Heung-min has over 12 sponsorship deals, quite apart from his salary and bonuses, although how many are linked to him being a Tottenham player I couldn't say.

According to research commissioned by AIA, Tottenham have 12 million South Korean followers, basically all because of Son Heung-min.

His value to Tottenham both on and off the field is immense.

However, when he retires some, indeed probably a lot of that support might die away, hence why Spurs need to continually look to expand markets like America.

How many must Harry Kane have as the England captain and countries best striker?

I wonder how many Harry Winks has and whether they would be affected by him leaving for a less high profile club?

It may not be a huge factor for some but it is certainly a factor when stepping down clubs as it isn't just your wage that gets lowered.

There are off the field factors we don't usually see, like the wishes of a girlfriend, partner or wife.

30-year-olds

30-year-olds

An interesting point from Graeme Souness on talkSPORT about new Chelsea centre-backs signing and 30-year-olds in general.

"I know it's only early. I saw something in Koulibaly last week. When Harry got his equalizer there were three Spurs players who could have scored that goal. They're attacking the ball that's why.

"You've got a six foot three, six or four, whatever he is, to stop them doing it. A big strong man, he should be in the mix yard box putting his head on that, at least knocking players out of the way.

"He ends up standing on the ground. I'm looking at him now and I'm thinking you're 31, I thought you were a big strong aggressive player that's going to attack every ball that arrives in our box.

"He didn't do it again yesterday. He didn't do it against Spurs, warning signs.

"I'd be saying, this is why we got you, getting into his room and i'm not saying this has happened to him, but when you get to 30+, you start to maybe think, maybe that's a challenge that is not for me anymore.

"He has to realize that he's playing in an English Premier League and that challenge he is going to have to make it every week."

Mauricio Pochettino

An observation from Andy Townsend about Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs a few years back when we were struggling to play out from the back against Manchester City.

We were getting ourselves into trouble but defenders wouldn't just clear their lines and Townsend asked a player why did they do it and he got the reply that Pochettino would go ballistic if e did anything else.

If we just cleared our lines we would be dropped, wwouldn't play next week.

In Spain players are taught to play out from the back under any circumstances right from the start of their coaching as children.

Our players have to start to learn as adults.

It explains why we sometimes struggle against a high pressing team. I often feel Chelsea do a number on us in the pressing stakes and that it's a large part of their success against us.

Wilfried Zaha

It comes as no surprise to anyone that Tottenham are linked with homegrown Wilfried Zaha once again.

The Crystal Palace winger needs no introduction to Spurs fans with discussions about him every summer.

The 29-year-old (30 in November) Englishman couldn't get in the England side so four years after his second full England cap defected to the Ivory Coast to get the international football he wanted.

With just one year left on his Crystal Palace contract he might be available for a sensible fee, but then would he want to come and be a squad rotation player?

My one gripe about Zaha, as stated previously, is his defending, he is poor defensively and as we try to have a solid defence and break on the counter attack, defensive ability and the concentration he struggles with, is rather important.

Japhet Tanganga

Nottingham Forest are the latest club to be linked with a move for Tottenham centre-back and part-time right-back Japhet Tanganga.

Spurs want a permanent deal at around £20m or loan with obligation and Forest appear to be interested in a permanent move too having apparently offered £13.5m, which has been turned down.

AC Milan are still very much after him too, they haven't given up.

Hakim Ziyech

Dutch news outlet AD are reporting that Tottenham are interested in Moroccan attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech.

Ziyech hasn't been a roaring success at Chelsea after his move from Ajax for £36m in 2020.

This season he has played 26 minutes in the thrashing at Leeds United, brought on when they were already 2-0 down.

Carlo Cudicini in 2009 was the last player who moved from Chelsea to Spurs on a free transfer but with a new owner come new ideas and new administration staff, as he has changed a raft of them so out goes the baggage that came with them.
