Comparison Chart For 18 Spurs Left-Back Targets

Tottenham's list of left-backs being watched covers plenty of Europe and today on THBN Tottenham Transfer Talk I take a look at left-backs.

The role of the full-back in the modern game has evolved from being the position nobody wanted to play to one that is integral to the game today.

A full-back was a position you put someone who wasn't good enough to play elsewhere. Their primary duty was to defend, but when Arsene Wenger came to the Premier League, he demanded his full-back pushed forward and attacked, while still getting back to do their defending.

That means now they have to be up and down the wing for 90 minutes supporting the attack and then being part of the defence.

If you can defend and not attack, you take something away from the team thus attacking full-backs are now the norm. Indeed a player Trent Alexander-Arnold or Kyle Walker is picked for their attacking abilities, neither are the greatest defenders.

Ben Davies has a reputation as being a defensive ful-back but he got forward plenty at Swansea before his move to Tottenham.

He has been injured but José Mourinho liked what he saw prior to the Welshman's injury and Danny Rose returns from Newcastle United when the season ends.

Mourinho had to devise a system which fitted the parts, having arrived mid-season and a more defensive left side fitted the bill. Whether that continues to be the case when he has developed more of his own squad than somebody else's we'll have to wait and see.

He has threatened to stick around at Spurs and leave for free in a years time but Spurs will want to sell him to get money in to rebuild, especially given the affect the pandemic is having on the club finances.

That makes solving the left-back situation a problem until the Rose situation is sorted.

PSG have been sending scouts to watch him at Newcastle and if they come knocking, hopefully he'll decide that would be a good move for him.

We must not forget we have 18-year-old (18 next April) England U-17 international (born in Ireland) Dennis Cirkin coming through.

And then there is Ryan Sessegnon who we are converting into an attacking left-back. At he moment he is a bit of a boy in a mans game and gets pushed off the ball too easily so perhaps a stop-gap left-back is our requirement.

Leagues we have been looking at include the Greek Super League, the Portuguese Liga NOS and the Polish Ekstraklasa as well as the more familiar ones.

Greece
  • Tottenham are keen on 24-year-old (25 next May) Greek international ( 3 caps, 1 assist) and Olympiacos left-back Kostas Tsimikas. Clubs across Europe watching him, thought to be close to a move to Italy.
Portugal
  • Tottenham are leading the race to sign 24-year-old (25 in September) Spanish U-21 international (2 caps, 1 assist) and Benfica left-back Álex Grimaldo. Clubs across Europe watching him.
Poland
  • Tottenham Hotspur are showing a keen interest in 19-year-old (20 next March) Polish U-19 international (8 caps,2 goals) and Legia Warsaw left-back Michał Karbownik. Barcelona are watching him.
Spurs have had a keen interest in Kostas Tsimikas and we have made a formal enquiry for Ecudorian intetnational (1 cap) Pervis Estupiñán.

Dani Alaba of Bayern Munich, Alex Sandro of Juventus or Nicolás Tagliafico of Ajax will be out of our price bracket for a left-back this summer, but they are included in the list, given their value, for alternative comparison purposes.

Then there is the issue of wages. We will have to keep a tight reign on wages until we recover economically so someone like Marcelo of Real Madrid would be ruled out.

Remember I said how all the cogs of many wheel had to meet at the right time, cost and wages being two of those cogs, take some players out of the equation this window, who could return in a future window under different circumstances.
