Kane reveals Spurs are striving for excellence

The Bournemouth game confirmed something I have been writing about for over a year now. We have adopted the Kaizen approach, small improvements to achieve greater change over time. Those improvements are not just playing improvements or individual player improvements, but can come and should come in every area of the business.

We have improved many aspects of the club over the last year, the recruitment of a head coach with the right philosophy was just a part of that. By that I mean he has the right approach to making a club successful. It is not just a question of buying expensive players on expensive wages, you first have to provide those people with the environment to succeed, you must have a club geared for success, Tottenham wasn't.

I asked before, why should quality players come to Spurs, we have nothing to offer them. I will reiterate once again, a winning mentality is not about winning a game of football, it is about driving yourself to improve every day and that drive comes from your internal motivation. At a club level the same must apply, the club must develop a winning mentality, the club must look to improve each and every aspect of its operation.

Sir Alex Ferguson said in the recent TV programme about how he developed a winning club that the tea ladies were just as important as the players, it was essential that they were happy and felt a part of the team at United. What he was saying was that every department has to strive for excellence, be recognised as doing so and be recognised as important in the overall picture.

You can't have the players trying to be the best if behind the scenes the club is run in mid-table fashion, everything should be geared towards being the best. Tottenham has a clearly defined strategy, transfer policy is a matter of record, the football side has been restructured, a new recruitment and evaluation team has been employed, an improved scouting network is being built, we have the best training facilities, our injury record was the best it has been in years last season and the mentality of the players has changed.

Those who don't buy into what the head coach wants to do have to leave and mentality is a part of that. The latest detail Tottenham have improved is the travelling to games. It may have only been 120 miles to Bournemouth, but the side flew. A 20-minute journey and they were there, ready to relax for the evening at their hotel. It is just another small improvement, you are treating the players like successful players, you are providing them with everything to make their job easier. In return, they are expected to be motivated, to continually improve and produce consistently on the pitch.

The best demands the best. The players are getting the best of everything, the head coach and the club expect that to bear fruit on the pitch over time. Sir Alex Ferguson was not instantly successful, after  three years the fans wanted him out, United, however, knew to build lasting success takes time, the club, not just the team had to be built.

To many it is just a 20-minute flight, to the leaders of industry, it is the Kaizen approach.
