Spurs bid £9m for Gökhan Töre, Atlético Madrid bid £4.28m

An area Mauricio Pochettino wants to strengthen Spurs is the wide attacking area. He highlighted this area when he arrived and is looking to address the issue this summer.

Aaron Lennon has been told he can leave and that he is not a part of future plans, that leaves a gap in the squad and Paul Mitchell has been busy uncovering potential replacements that fir the Tottenham strategy.

His team use the internet and specialist websites to provide then with statistics and video of individual player performances. The next step is to watch them live before making a decision as to whether they are currently suitable and where in the list of potential players for that position they should be. Enquiries are then made as to potential availability and whether a player is interested, plus what sort of package he would want, which all comes from his agents.

One player on that list is 23-year-old Turkish international Gökhan Töre who can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, in our system that would be a wide attacker. He plays for our Europa League group opponents Beşiktaş, who hold an interest in unwanted centre-back Younes Kaboul.

Spanish newspaper AS report that Atlético Madrid are set to make a £4.28 million (US$6.55m - AUS$8.56m - €6m) bid, although with a contract until 2019 and transfermarkt valuing him at £8.8 million (US$13.46m - AUS$17.61m - €12.34m) the Turkish side may well want more.

There were reports in February linking Tottenham with Töre by Turkish newspapers and suggesting Beşiktaş wanted £10.7 million (US$16.36m - AUS$21.41m - €15m). They also suggested at the time that apart from Atlético Madrid there was interest from Valencia and West Ham United.

Beşiktaş vice-president, Ahmet Nur Çebi informed Turkish newspaper Aksam that the club turned down a £9 million (US$13.77m - AUS$18.01m - €12.62m) bid from Tottenham in January, so the Spanish bid has little or no chance of success.

He was with the Chelsea academy between 2009 and 2011 before leaving for Rubin Kazan. The Russians sold him last summer for £3.96 million (US$6.06m - AUS$7.92m - €5.55m) after he has spent a season on loan at Beşiktaş.

Töre was hit by a bullet in a Turkish nightclub last April which required shoulder surgery, but that didn't stop him playing 43 games in all competitions, scored 9 goals with 11 assists. Our interest in him will not have subsided but whether we will be willing to raise our January bid we will have to wait and see.
