Vertonghen - Spurs on the right track

The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back pairing will not be the centre-back pairing for Belgium if previous games are anything to go by, Jan Vertonghem plays at left-back and Toby Alderweireld often plays at right-back. It's a policy of playing your best players and fitting them in.

Vertonghem bounced back from a poor game while a far better display against Everton at the weekend. It is important when a player doesn't play well that he performs in the next game, it demonstrates a mental strength and a determination that should serve that player well in the future.

Sporza have reported Jan Vertonghen talking on several topics related to Spurs and the Premier League as well as Belgium ahead of the upcoming internationals.

"Toby is a strong star. He does what you expect from him, solid and professional football. Moussa and Nacer up front do their thing, pity about Mousa, hopefully its a small injury.
"We feel we are on the right track, only have not yet translated into points. We want to reach the top four. We have not succeeded since I have played there.
"We'll come close, we'll be among the top teams again. In the Premier League sometimes you are almost happy with a point at home. It is not easy to get into the top four, you have to rise above yourself almost every game to get a result."

In other European leagues it is not like this, at least not to the extent that it is in the Premier League and while the expectation is that a top side should always beat a lower side, that simply isn't the case. There are examples of upsets almost every week, who would have expected Burnley to beat Manchester City last season.
