Wanyama no thanks, he lacks vision

Toby Alderweireld passes a general comment about his former team mates and a newspaper runs a story that Spurs are chasing Victor Wanyama, how predictable and probably complete rubbish.

At Celtic while he was sound defensively he took too long to make up his mind what to do with the ball and he is unlikely to have cured that problem yet.

One of the major problems identified at Spurs was when the opportunity is there the defensive midfielders should be looking to move the ball forward as fast as possible, not dwell on the ball, weight up options, make a decision and then pass. A player should know his options before he receives the ball, he should be constantly looking around to assess where his players are, where the opposition are, what balls he may be able to play, what balls he can't.

It sounds simple and it is but it's amazing the number of players who don't possess that vision, it should be a required element of training because it isn't something you hear about being taught, some naturally do it, some don't and develop it to a basic level as they go. Players who have honed the skill, like Pirlo, stand out, not because of their vision but because they seem to have so much time on the ball. His game revolves around vision so why would you not try and instill that in all your players to his level?

There is so much more to football than what you can do with a ball and it makes such a difference to a player, we have embraced and improved nutrition to enhance performance, mental training and vision training should be next on the list.
