Sanchez to be first choice over Alderweireld

Sanchez to be the first choice CB over Alderweireld

Davinson-Sanchez

The first day back and it is the start of training for some of the guys not involved internationally before the rest return to pre-season today, 12 July.

The first couple of days there are multiple tests to assess their fitness and use as benchmarks when a player is recovering from injury to assess where they are in their rehabilitation.

Those who have returned to training:
Paulo Gazzaniga
Kieran Trippier
Kyle Walker-Peters
Cameron Carter-Vickers
Ben Davies
Harry Winks
Oliver Skipp
Josh Onomah
Georges-Kevin N'Koudou
Erik Lamela
Lucas Moura
Vincent Janssen

Of those Vincent Janssen, Georges-Kevin N'Koudou, Josh Onomah, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Kieran Trippier are available for sale. If the right offer came in for Erik Lamela he would be available too, but that is very unlikely.

Kieran Trippier has not secured a move yet. He played carrying an injury last season and like Danny Rose will be assessed over the next few weeks. We do want to sell at the moment, but if improved fitness means a return to form then he could still be here next season.

The players returning to training today are:

Hugo Lloris
Toby Alderweireld
Jn Vertonghen
Danny Rose
Moussa Sissoko
Tanguy Ndombélé
Dele Alli
Christian Eriksen
Son Heung-min
Harry Kane

I can reveal that Pochettino has met with Toby Alderweireld and the Belgian will not be signing the contract extension that is on the table for him.

He will either secure a move or run down his contract, which means that Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen will probably be our first choice pairing with Foyth and Alderweireld providing backup.

As I have been revealing this window, Spurs really want to sell Alderweireld this window rather than having to replace two centre-backs next summer, that creates an expense already.

Vertonghen will be returning to Holland but Spurs will offer him a new deal and try to convince him to give us a few more years. He is in the last year of his contract.

We would have dearly liked to have brought in Joachim Andersen this window but he has now signed for Lyon ahead of pre-season training.

Tottenham have therefore just bid €30m (£26.91m - $33.72m) plus bonuses for 18-year0old (19 next March) Arsenal target Willian Saliba. The Saint-Étienne centre-back is our second choice behind Joachim Andersen who has joined Lyon.

We are meeting the French club to discuss a deal that surpasses Arsenal's offer and is greater than they are asking for. That tells you how much we want this guy to replace Toby Alderweireld as this offer came after Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino had met with Alderweireld.

The problem we had is that nobody has bought Toby Alderweireld yet. Should we sell him for less after his release clause has run out?

The release clause runs out on 26 July so any deal must be signed by 25 July.

Let's hope the meeting with Franco Baldini on Friday goes well. He is the technical director at Roma, but without Champions League football are they going to be able to afford the wages Alderweireld wants.

His agent has spoken with Roma Sporting Director Gianluca Petrachi and given the green light to a 3-year deal but at a reduced salary from the £165,000-a-week (€183,695 - $207,054) Spurs have offered him.

Roma are likely to offer him €3m (£2.69m - $3.37m) plus bonuses as opposed to the €4.3m (£3.86m - $4.85m) net that he is currently on at Spurs.

Tottenham have offered him a 2-year deal, Roma will offer him a 3-year deal.

He isn't going to sign the 2-year deal with us so it is in our best interests to sell him now.

The next couple of weeks will be important for us to know where we stand, particularly when Pochettino sits down and discusses the future with each player. He will be doing so with every member of the squad.

Poch needs to discuss what he requires, whether the players has a big future with the club or not, what they can do to increase their opportunities etc and the player will put his views, whether he wants to stay or go, air concerns etc.

That process has begun and indeed I brought you news of Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino's meeting with Christian Eriksen and his agent this morning. You can read that at this link:
Eriksen Latest - Spurs Offer Deal quite apart from the Alderweireld news that isn't in the press yet that he will not sign a new deal.

Players running down contracts in their last year are not a part of our future and Poch plans ahead, he uses other players ahead of them as the club has to play the following season without them so he prepares now.

That is something they have to consider if they wish to go down that route, otherwise, there is no pressure on them to sign a deal and when players know that then you are giving them all the power.

News would spread throughout the game and future players wouldn't have a qualm about running down their contracts so if you threaten it, then you must back it up.
