Why Spurs Can't Sign Players

Why Spurs Can't Sign Players

Ndombele-and-Lo-Celso

Homegrown players count if they are over 21 on January 1st of the year the season starts.

We can name a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players, the remaining squad members up to a maximum of 25 have to be named to the Premier League. Any teams can include youngsters who do not have to be named before the season.

Michel Vorm and Fernando Llorente have come to the end of their contracts and been released. That takes us down to 15 non-homegrown players we have.

  1. Hugo Lloris
  2. Paulo Gazzaniga
  3. Serge Aurier
  4. Toby Alderweireld
  5. Jan Vertonghen
  6. Davinson Sanchez
  7. Moussa Sissoko
  8. Victor Wanyama
  9. Eric Dier
  10. Erik Lamela
  11. Lucas Moura
  12. Heung-min Son
  13. Georges-Kevin N’Koudou
  14. Christian Eriksen
  15. Vincent Janssen.
You would expect Georges-Kevin N'Koudou and Vincent Janssen to leave which leaves us with 4 spaces for non-homegrown players.

At the moment, however, we can only bring in two non-homegrown players and it is pretty clear that we have reserved those spots for Tanguy Ndombélé and Giovani Lo Celso.

The offer for Elif Elmas from Fenerbache is with Vincent Janssen going the other way, as reported 2 weeks ago. That is one non-homegrown player for another.

If Joachim Andersen is our preferred centre-back option is we can sell Toby Alderweireld, then again that is one non-homegrown player for another.

The same with Christian Eriksen potentially leaving. Real Madrid has offered Dani Ceballos (non-homegrown) although we would rather have Marco Asensio, another non-homegrown.

Homegrown players over the age of 21, so 22 or over on 1st January 2019
  1. Danny Rose
  2. Kieran Trippier
  3. Ben Davies (not for Champions League)
  4. Kyle Walker-Peters
  5. Harry Winks
  6. Luke Amos
  7. Anthony Georgiou
  8. Josh Onomah
  9. Dele Alli
  10. Harry Kane
Only 8 of those can be named in a Premier League squad, the rest cannot play in the competition.

Josh Onomah (22) doesn't have the right mentality and isn't therefore good enough and 21-year old (22 in December) Cameron Carter-Vickers has been playing Championship football so you'd expect both of those to be moved on or go out on loan again.

That leaves one other leaving and if a homegrown player is brought in, another player leaving too.

Talk of Gareth Bale, well where would he fit in our homegrown quota? We'd have to sell, loan out or play in the Development squad and Cup games, Luke Amos, Anthony Georgiou and Josh Onomah

Marcus Edwards, who has been on loan in Holland and seemingly getting his attitude and head in a better place is a 20-year-old (21 in December). He is under contract for another year.
