Mason in the frame to start for England

Roy Hodgson has suggested that three players are in the running to replace Michael Carrick in the England team with the Manchester United player having to miss the Switzerland game with a calf injury.

The England manager put three names in the frame when he spoke to the press, Fabian Delph (Manchester City), James Milner (Liverpool) and Ryan Mason (Tottenham).

"It's a calf injury, not that serious. It came out of nowhere in the warm-up in San Marino. He had a preliminary scan here and the doctors decided there was something there. We don't believe it's a long-term injury. But we have plenty of options. Delph, Mason and Milner can all play there without us changing our style too much."

James Milner has generally played on the right and while he has defensive qualities I can't forget the time he did play central midfield with defensive duties in an England shirt a few years back now, he was dreadful. It;s not a role he plays often and he looked at sea, I don't see how he is going to be any better now, not having played it regularly enough.

Ryan Mason is not a Michael Carrick, he may be used as a defensive midfielder by us, but he is used more as a link midfielder, his role is to join attacks while his defensive midfield partner sits and defends, Carrick is more the sit and defend midfielder with a good passing range.

Fabian Delph is in the Mason mould and has been the first choice for Hodgson so despite his words Delph is bound to be selected. I suspect if England qualify he'll want to have a further look at Mason in upcoming games, not a bad rise for a player playing at Swindon Town not so long ago and who some Spurs fans don't think is any good, but then what do they know.
