Goodwill gesture to facilitate Berahino transfer

Do you remember the article yesterday, you should it is not long ago and it discussed the conducting of transfer negotiations. You can read it here: Transfer Negotiation

In that article I talked about initial offers, establishing the principle of selling a player, the risk factor for young players determining the add-on factor and using other players do make a deal more attractive. That is exactly what I was discussing in that article, you can see it in the Saido Berahino negotiations, at least the element we are seeing played out in public. You'll also recall Lyon making noises about wanting Fazio plus cash for Clinton Njié so clearly we are using him in negotiations as a bargaining chip to facilitate deals.

The news that Spurs have agreed a £5-million (€7.08m) fee for Federico Fazio appears to be cheap, considering we paid a total of £10-million (€14.15m) but he will be a makeweight in the Berahino deal even if it is claimed the deal is unconnected. We are providing something the other side want to solve a problem, there won't be too many dual UEFA Europa League winners WBA will be able to buy.

An unconnected transfer still has a goodwill factor built in, we have been very reasonable over this potential transfer so how about reciprocating that over the guy we want. That may lead to a lower fee or a greater amount of add-ons. As I mentioned yesterday the two sides have to agree the element of risk whether Berahino will or will not turn out to be the player WBA believe he could be. Letting Fazio go cheaply, Daniel Levy always tries to get his money back on a player, may persuade WBA to accept a larger add-on element.

If £5-million were included as add-ons, a fee of over £20-million (€28.30m) fee may look good to the WBA fans, but would only be payable if he met certain performance-related conditions.  If not the the fee would only in the region of £15-million (€21.23m).

I have no doubt that if Berahino were not coming to Spurs that we would not sell Argentinian Fazio to WBA for £5-million, the fee would be higher and they probably wouldn't buy. He is a you scratch my back and I'll scratch your potential transfer, a goodwill gesture to facilitate the Berahino transfer.
