Doubtful Vertonghen will make 200 Spurs appearances

Jan Vertonghen, should he stay or should he go? At his best he is an excellent defender, put him in the right team and he excels, in a misfiring team his performances are inconsistent.

Doubtful Vertonghen will make 200 Spurs appearances

I have had reservations about his mentality but he is a player I'd still keep hold of and improve what is in front of him. He wants to win and is frustrated he can't but has perhaps displayed that frustration in the wrong way sometimes. channelled in the right way it's a positive, channelled in the wrong way it's a negative.

Defensively we are not perfect but we have Walker and DeAndre Yedlin coming in at right-back and the club are looking at ways to let Vlad Chiriches go.

It is believed we want to bring in Hector Moreno, whom Pochettino knows from his time at Espanyol. It was reported last summer he was interesting a host of top clubs and his performances at the World Cup were of a quality defender, always in the right place at the right time.

In front on Vertonghen we have Bentaleb, Mason and presumably Stambouli as the three for the future. The remainder, Capoue, Paulinho and Dembele all need replacing. Capoue is too slow on the ball and both Paulinho and Dembele don't have the right mentality.

Vertonghen is frustrated by Spurs you feel. He like many before him had a vision of Tottenham progressing and it simply isn't happening. He therefore understands the fans frustration and has no complaints with them booing the side off at the weekend.

“The fans are not wrong to boo us. They want to win and I want to win. I understand their frustration.
“I think we should be winning these games as well. And we try to. We just have to find a way to beat these teams.
“We need to start winning again. Our home form is not good enough. We tried to get back on track against Everton last week and we did – a very important win, I think – but we tried to play the same way and it didn’t work. We didn’t find a way to break them.”

Ahead of the defensive midfield there are further problems, it's more a question of who we should keep rather than finding one or two to sell. None of that is Vertonghen's problem though. All he has to decide is how long it will take Tottenham to fix and is it worth the wait. You suspect if he was given the captaincy then he'd sign a contract extension immediately, without it there is little to keep him at the club.

The Daily Mirror suggest that Liverpool are the latest suitors, they can certainly offer him more money than we can. Quite why they are claiming he is out of contract in the summer is a mystery though as he isn't, he has a contract until 2016.

Vertonghen was on Barcelona's short list if they couldn't sign their first choice this summer, but in the end they did so Vertonghen wasn't required but there are suggestions Manchester United are also interested in taking him away.

If we want to keep him then we have to improve in the second half of the season and that means having a good January transfer window, which is far from certain given the difficulty we will have selling players. His contract situation is well know and he spoke to Spurs TV saying he was happy to have made 100 appearances for the club and hoped he'd make 200.

If he makes 200 in a couple of seasons then we'll be in the top four having vastly improved I'd suggest and that may all depend upon this January window.
