Rose responds to the Ben Davies challenge

Wales boss Chris Coleman believes Ben Davies will make himself the first choice left-back at Spurs and Maurichio Pochettino has told Danny Rose 4 times that he can play for England.

Rose responds to the Ben Davies challenge

Rather a conflict of interests there. You would have thought for Danny Rose to play for England he will need to continue the improvement he has made and keep Ben Davies out of the Premier League side. It is rather a welcome change to have two players fighting over what has been a problem position.

For those wondering why Danny Rose was offered another contract, you might like to remember that Pochettino had a good look at him first in pre-season and thus it would have been his decision, or with his approval that Rose was offered a 5-year contract. A contract of course is just a way of locking in a transfer fee, it doesn't actually mean much in today's football world where the player generally has the power.

No doubt Davies will get his chance, it's up to him to perform in Europe and on the training ground to force his way in, I can never understand this charity mentality some fans have. Footballers and managers understand when you are at club that challenges at the top of the league you have to grab whatever chance you get, a run of games to see if you can make the grade is a luxury bigger clubs can't afford, it costs points.

Despite having to battle for a place instead of being certain of a place as was the case at Swansea, Wales manager Coleman believes Davies will come good at Tottenham report Wales Online.

“I think Ben will end up being their first choice. It is not always easy when you have a big move. Ben is a Swansea boy and we don’t tend to be great travellers when we are young, but he is a top player and a great lad, he will settle in there.
“Danny Rose has not done anything wrong, but all players have a bad day, and when he does and Ben gets his chance we know he is good enough. Mauricio Pochettino knows his stuff, he would not have spent all that money on him otherwise.
“It may take him time but I have no doubts he will make it work and play a lot of games for Tottenham.”

You have to give Danny Rose huge credit for improving and battling to keep Davies out. We could do with a battle like that in a few other positions, but there are very few battles for places in truth, certainly not enough.

If you told any Spurs fan last season that Danny Rose would be in an England squad he'd be looking for the men in white coats chasing you but a few injuries and Danny Rose gets his call, far earlier than he would have expected. Training with England will only help his development and give his confidence a shot in the arm.

It's his chance to show Roy Hodgson first-hand what he can do and learning from Leighton Baines you would have thought can only be beneficial. The international break may be of benefit to Spurs in the long run if it helps to make Rose a better player.

Rose himself told reporters that Pochettino kept telling him he could lay for England. Perhaps then Rose is lacking a little confidence. That can be the way with feisty people, some are covering up insecurities and putting on a face. Perhaps he is playing better because his confidence is higher, which if that is the case then he should return even more confident.

You would think he would play against Sunderland where he was on loan at for a season with Dacies to remain on the bench. Everyone was poor against Liverpool and with Davies playing international games and Rose not, he'll be the fresher of the two.
