Table Toppers Transfer Talk

As is usual at these times of no meaningful football, I cover a variety of topics today, including some Tottenham Transfer Talk.

I want to pick up on something Martin Keown said on talkSPORT when discussing Tottenhm's improvement and the blame culture that Antonio Conte used.

The former Arsenal and England centre-back said:

"What they respond to is an arm around, looking at the things they can do, rather than the things they can't."

This is something I have talked about years back and it goes against the grain of popular thinking.

Everyone tells you to improve your weaknesses to improve, but they are your weaknesses because you don't like doing them.

You make faster and greater improvements if you focus on improving the things you are good at.

If you improve your weaknesses, you'll become average, at least at them, but if you improve your strengths you become exceptional at them, you become a player who can make a difference.

Yes you work on a weakness but you work equally, if not more, on your strength.

Working on something you enjoy, you'll put in more work, more effort, feel more reward so don't neglect and take your skills for granted.

Lucky Spurs, really?

People in the media and I presume social media, are suggesting Spurs are riding their luck right now, BUT, nobody is saying the same thing about Arsenal.

Why?

They were lucky against us with a deflection and a penalty against our two player-created goals.

But look at the luck they have had in the last 7 games:

  • Deflection vs Man City
  • Penalty
  • Deflection
  • Own goal
  • Penalty
  • Deflection
  • Penalty
Deflections can go anywhere, but for Arsenal, they are going in right now, that's not down to skill.

Arsenal have had 5 penalties this season already, Spurs none.

Arsenal are 12th for non-penalty goals, Everton have scored more from open play, yet Spurs are supposed to be the lucky ones!

xG from open play

We had luck against Liverpool with a deflection yes but otherwise, we have been creating good goals, not based on luck.

What has Aeteta spent, £600m and had 4.5 years to build what Ange Postecoglou has built in 3.5 months.

OK, that's a slight exaggeration, we don't have the squad depth at the moment and we are at the beginning of the process, but, at the moment we are comparable, based on results.

Tottenham Transfer News

Juventus sent scouts to Copenhagen to watch Pierre-Emile Højbjerg play for Denmark against Kazakhstan, whom they beat 3-1.

That is as clear an indication as you need that their interest is genuine but there are other options as well of course.

Barcelona boss Xavi is interested in former Tottenham centre-back Juan Foyth and 18-year-old (19 next February) Royal Antwerp starlet Arthur Vermeeren, whom Spurs are said to have already made an offer for.

Another 18-year-old on Xavi's list, that you may not yet know Tottenham are also following, is Gabriel Moscardo, a defensive midfielder at Brazilian Serie A side Corinthians.

Right-footed Moscardo is 19 next September and has been in the starting XI for 71% of league games this season. He has 1 cao for the Brazil U-23 side.

Chelsea submitted a bid of £21.64 million (€25 million) including add-ons and were turned down. The Brazilian side wanted a higher guaranteed fee and add-ons taking the figure to £25.97 million (€30 million).

Moscardo has a contract with Corinthians until July 31st 2026 and his release clause is set at £86.57 million (€100 million).

In Brazil, for domestic transfers, release clauses are linked to a player's salary in line with the CLT (Consolidation of Labor Laws) meaning £73.84 million (€85.27 million).

While Giovanni Lo Celso is not his first choice, he remains an option because of his decreasing value due to his contract with Spurs getting shorter and shorter.
