Managing a loanee is a big responsibility

Mauricio Pochettino is a big admirer of Mark Warburton after the work he did with Alex Pritchard at Brentford last season.

Brentford invested in the side last summer but arguably their best player turned out to be the young Spurs loanee who Pochettino has said he is expecting big things of this season. Simply loaning a young player out to any side is the wrong approach, a potential loan deal must be fully researched so if you know a manager, know the way he wants to play, know how he treats young developing adults, both on and arguably more importantly off the field, then you know your player is going to be in safe hands.

The environment has to be right for the individual, they have to feel comfortable, confident and have the pressure of performing to fight for and keep a place. For a creative player like Pritchard, their performances directly affect the success of a side so they have to win over a fan base as well, all in a new city living away from home.

For some it's a question of cutting the apron strings so they mature quicker then they would in a closeted environment, the quicker an individual matures, the quicker they develop as a player. There are plenty of clubs who want to tale our youngsters so a manager who plays in a style that suits our game and who works with our players well is going to have an advantage when there are a new group of loanees available.

Mark Warburton is now the boss of Scottish giants Rangers who we played in a training game at Hotspur Way this summer. Before, during and after that game Pochettino and Warburton discussed sending players on loan to Rangers for the coming season. Despite remaining in the Scottish Championship Rangers have a huge following home and away, they have a history of expecting to win every game and that places huge pressure on any youngster. That pressure to perform is possibly a greater test than the standard of football in the Championship for the two players we have now sent there on loan.

The Scottish Daily Record newspaper reveal that Warburton has secured the services of 18-year-old (19 next March) England Under-18 midfielder Nathan Oduwa and 20-year-old (21 next August) defensive midfielder and centre-back Dominic Ball.

Pochettino is happy the pair are in safe hands and the development of starlet Oduwa will be watched with great interest after his appearances in pre-season friendlies brought him to the attention of many a Spurs fan.
