Spurs chase Suarez
2 min read
Tottenham are in search of defensive midfielders and have been linked with and talking to players that the top clubs in Europe are also trying to buy.
We have tried hard to buy several defensive midfielders with Morgan Schneiderlin top of that list, but the lure of Old Trafford is too much for us to compete with. Others have fallen by the wayside with the competitiveness of the Premier League counting against us. Players have a greater chance of winning trophies and getting into the UEFA Champions League, with the exposure that brings, at foreign clubs in less competitive leagues. That can then help them secure a move to a top club.
Back in January Arsenal were trying to sign Atlético Madrid defensive midfielder Mario Suárez and it seems he is now our target along with Inter Milan. Inter Milan signed Geoffrey Kondogcia from Monaco, a player we were also after and were looking to recruit Giannelli Imbula to join him. That looked likely, but an agreement couldn't be reached with Marseilles so Imbula flew to Porto to undergo a medical and sign for the Portuguese team.
Manchester United has Morgan Schneiderlin as a backup option so you could argue that we are pursuing the right standard of player, yet for some of our supporters unless a player has a designer label name and a price tag to fit we shouldn't buy.
Having missed out on Imbula both Inter and ourselves have turned out attention to a 28-year-old (29 in February) player not getting enough game time at Atlético Madrid, Mario Suárez. The Spanish international is under contract with them until 2017. You would expect negotiations to be fairly swift with all clubs desires to bring players in early thanks to the season starting earlier than usual.
