Pochettino is only interested in winners

It may be stating the obvious but 43-year-old Argentinian head coach Mauricio Pochettino talks common sense when it comes to transfers and the top four.

Not all fans see it that way though or recognise a strategy, which is the result of emotional support. Nothing wrong with that at all, we are all emotional about our club but there are times when you need to sit back and think to see the picture.

“Tottenham have a great potential to fight for the top four. Maybe it is not easy to fight against Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea because they have behind them a big financial potential and every year they spend a lot of money and sign players who quickly perform well.
“Maybe our project needs to be different. We need to create our own project, our own philosophy. I think that we need to deliver that because Tottenham is different to another club. Better or worse — I don’t know. But we need to create our own philosophy and to be special because we are Tottenham."

It's been patently obvious that Mauricio Pochettino was appointed with the long term future of the club in mind. Andre Villas Boas was appointed with the same strategy, build the club through yhe youth into a successful and sustainable strategy. A playing style was to be put in place and develop a youth conveyor belt so the club didn't have to rely on the transfer market all the time.. The failure to achieve Champions League set that back and then the club tried to buy success, but failed.

A return to the original strategy was made with the emphasis on youth and building a conveyor belt for sustainable success. That required a manager who could develop the youth. After the most extensive checks we have ever done on a manager the club appointed Mauricio Pochettino and have behind him st every opportunity.

Pochettino knows the constraints the club has and therefore what is possible and what is fans fantasy. The November incident saw the club firmly stand behind Pocherrino giving him permission to basically ostracise certain players. Forcing them out the club so new players can be brought in will make for a busy summer.

Pochettino has previously made it clear he feels the first seven weeks of pre-season are going to be vital for the development of the team. Spurs will try to do business early but that is of course dependent on being able to offload players and new players agreeing a move, rather than waiting to see what else may come up for them. He spoke to the BBC once again on the issue.

"We need to prepare for a big summer, build a strong team and fight for the top four. Our dream for our supporters and this club is that they deserve to fight for the top four and be in the Champions League.
"After my experiences of last year it's tough to play in the Europa League. I prefer to play in the Champions League but if you reach the Europa League it's good for the club. If we reach the Europa League next season, we must try and do better and fight for the top four and to try and win the Europa League, but it is not my dream."

This summer is about taking the club a long way to where we want to be playing wise. Out with those who do not have the winning mentality required and in with hungry young players who want to improve. I have said it many times, players who want to improve, at whatever age, are the players we need at the club. They are players with a winning mentality, players who constantly look and say what can I do better and then work on it daily to make tiny improvements.

If 18 players each make 10 tiny improvements to their game, the team has made at least 180 improvements, there will be other team improvements that come out of these improvements. Players in your squad, like Adebayor, who are happy where they are and don't look to improve actually hold a club back.

I wrote a series where I stressed that Tottenham have to become World Class in assessing players mentally prior to any purchase. It is the single most important aspect of a player so I hope our new recruitment team are a sight better at it than we have seen thus far from Spurs. It costs nothing to implement, unless you bring in a sports psychologist to assess players, but even then it costs peanuts.

With less money we have to find an edge to beat the competition and that is an edge that could make a significant difference which has not yet been fully embraced by football. Clubs, Spurs included, play lip service to in in relation to what could be done.

Throughout this season we have heard, Fazio, Lloris and Pochettino talk about mentality and building th right mentality. We have relied on a set of players who don't give up, players who constantly want to improve. Kane, Mason, Bentaleb, Dier, Eriksen, who Tim Sherwood told us has to be dragged off the training field. Players like this need the experience of Fazio, Lloris, Vertonghen around them and the infectious nature of the youth will have a boosting affect on these players.

In Pochettino we seem to have at last found a manger who appreciates it and has no time for those who lack it. If you look into every club he has been at, he has his circle of players and it is always a player not in that circle who whines to the press about it. They want to play but if they don't have the right mentality it is pointless picking them and a waste of time spending time with them.

It's a big summer, or should I say another big summer, it's about time we got one right, centre around mentality and we will.
