Jackson Martinez not right for Spurs

talkSPORT’s South America football expert Tim Vickery, who moved to live over there 21 years ago and is a Spurs fan, thinks the Porto striker Jackson Martinez is just a goalscorer and provides little else for the team.

Jackson Martinez not right for Spurs

He has likened him to Roberto Soldado in that you have to create him plenty of chances and then he'll score but Spurs need a forward in the Harry Kane mold, one who not only scores goals but contributes with assists, hold up play, linking play, off the ball running, defending from the front and all the other hard work he puts in.

“He is an out-and-out goalscorer, but he doesn’t do a great deal else. Tottenham are one of the clubs that have looked at him and Spurs fans might be a little bit scarred with the word ‘Soldado’, because he is that kind of player.
“You give him enough chances in the box and he’ll attack them, whether that be on his left or right foot or in the air. But he doesn’t do a great deal, other than putting the ball in the net, so if he’s not doing that you’re not getting much else. And at the age his is now, there’s no real sell-on value for him either.”

He agreed a new contract that takes effect in the summer and as Harry Kane has shown age is no barrier to success, Spurs have a young side who were upset with certain players not pulling their weight. Jackson Martinez, if Vickery is right, will not provide enough off the ball to help the system we play work.

I have long felt he is too expensive for what he is and being 28-years-old doesn't fit our recruitment policy. Someone like Danny Ings, who scored again last night against Manchester United at Old Trafford, would offer more, is used to the league and would save the £26.5 million fee.

There seems to be plenty of downside with him and not enough upside. I'm sure the press will link us again but it's doubtful there will be anything in it and I can't see Mauricio Pochettino bringing him in.
