Who plays, who covers what

Mauricio Pochettino has named his first 18 man squad and his first XI for the opening fixture of the Premier League.

Spurs XI: Lloris; Naughton, Dier, Kaboul, Rose; Bentaleb, Capoue; Lennon, Eriksen, Lamela; Adebayor.
Spurs Subs: Friedel, Dawson, Davies, Holtby, Townsend, Kane, Soldado

West Ham United: Adrian, O'Brien, Reid, Collins, Cresswell, Nolan (c), Noble, Kouyate, Downing, Cole, Vaz Te
West Ham United Subs: Jaaskelainen, Zarate, Demel, Diame, Poyet, Valencia, Burke

Hugo Lloris naturally started in goal with Brad Friedel as back upon the bench, Michel Vorm needing time to get up to fitness after the World Cup and his subsequent late holiday.

Tottenham lined up pretty much as expected with Walker, Dawson and Chiriches not being ready to start the game after injury, while Vertonghen is three weeks behind everyone else on fitness.

Kyle Naughton therefore continued to deputise at right-back and stake his claim for the first choice slot, Eric Dier had to be thrust straight into the Premier League alongside captain Younes Kaboul and Danny Rose got the nod over Ben Davies after impressing in his 45 minutes against Schaleke.

Further up the field to partner Etienne Capoue, Nabil Bentaleb got the nod over Lewis Holtby which wasn't much of a surprise and the three behind the striker were the three who have been playing together in pre-season Eric Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Aaron Lennon.

Emmanuel Adebayor started as Roberto Soldado doesn't hold a goal threat at the moment.

On the bench Michael Dawson is named as an emergency but it's doubtful that Pochettino would want to bring him on unless forced to, he wouldn't be fit enough yet. Ben Davies provides further defensive cover while Lewis Hotby covers Erik Lamela, Capoue and Bentaleb.

Andros Townsend provides another option and covers both Lennon and Lamela while Harry Kane covers any of the front four positions with Roberto Soldado as the reserve striker.

Emmanuel Adebayor is recovering from malaria and clearly against Schalke isn't 100% yet so I'd expect to see Soldado come on at some stage in the second half as Ade gets tired.
