Tottenham Talk on Friday 10th Sept - The ESL Again

NFL

Good morning Top of the Tablers and welcome positive Spurs fans to another Tottenham Talk session with the #1 Spurs blog, Tottenham Hotspur Blog News (THBN).

Well let's crack on with our Spurs Chat section today and discuss the European Super League (ESL).

While many were celebrating the demise of the inevitable European Super League, and I do understand their position, I did warn that it isn't dead, that it rears it's ugly head every 2 years and will eventually happen.

The top clubs generate all the money.

TV companies pile money on the table for the right to televise the top clubs, the rest are endured by TV companies basically, they don't really want to show them.

The big clubs therefore, owned by owners interested in money, want a greater say in the distribution of the money they create and a larger chunk of it.

They have no interest in the welfare of smaller clubs, just themselves and the way to generate more money through football is to be constantly playing the top clubs.

Tottenham are one of those and it is a fully understandable desire, in business terms, a very sensible move.

But, Tottenham have also looked beyond that to bring in other revenue streams over the long term, like placing a foot in the lucrative NFL commercial market and the use of the stadium for 24 non-football events a year, such as boxing, rugby league and music events.

A full stadium with an additional high class hotel to accommodate stars and bring in associated income too.

Those complaining simply don't understand the situation.

Beyonce doesn't want to be sitting in London traffic, Bon Jovi don't want to be flagging down a taxi, they want everything at their fingertips, cocooned in a protected palatial world.

Building a hotel is therefore common sense, to cater for that need and produce an additional revenue stream for the club.

Relying on one revenue stream is dangerous, anything happens to that revenue stream and you are stuffed basically.

Now that the public are allowed back out, the promotion of the stadium for these lucrative non-football events, which will easily bring in £100m per year, if not double that, become a vital issue.

To that end, Fabio Paratici has been brought is to handle the footballing side of the business basically.

He is given a wages budget and a transfer budget to rebuild Tottenham.

The old guard, most of whom grew together, are being moved out, Sissoko (32), Lamela (29), Hart (34), Alderweireld (32), Aurier (28) and being replaced with young talent.

Exciting talent like, Romero (23), Gil (20), Gollini (26), Sarr (18) who can again, all grow together.

But this post is more about off the field matters and with Paratici handling the football side, Daniel Levy is free to oversee the growth of the brand, the business, the club and to maximise it's earning potential.

Regardless of what his detractors think, that is for the good of the club, for investment into the team.

Sustainable business income pays for the football, full stop, not a a sugar daddy.

Everyone should applaud that, everyone.

If the European Super League (ESL) had taken off, then the broadcasters would have reduced Champions League money and redirected it into the ESL.

Being in the UEFA Champions League is currently essential to receive vast sums of money, much more than those who are not in it.

That would change to being essential to be in the ESL to receive those vast sums.

Financially it would be essential to be in it, essential, to compete and be a top team, it would be impossible without it.

As I said earlier, the idea is not dead, never will be until it is achieved, it's merely a matter of when, not if, as money talks.

According to German magazine Spiegel (28th Aug), that the three surviving Super League rebel teams, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus, are plotting a new effort to overthrow UEFA's premier Champions League tournament.

Italian website TMW quote:

"With their short-lived effort to establish a new top league in April, a breakaway group of 12 clubs sent shockwaves across European football.

"It was created to take authority away from UEFA, the governing organization of European football.

"In the face of intense criticism from fans, players, politicians, and organizations, nine teams - Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur - backed down within 48 hours.

"The remaining dissident teams, Real, Barcelona, and Juventus, are reportedly negotiating with two consulting firms on their next effort to establish a "Super League 2.0."

Make no bones, this is all about having more and more importantly, guaranteed, money, nothing else.

Former Arsenal player Charlie George on Talksport yesterday when asked who would win between the 1971 Arsenal team & today's team.

Charlie: I think it'd be close but we'd do them by the odd goal.
Interviewer: Really, you think it would be that close?
Charlie: Yeah, you have to remember we're all in our 70s now!

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been named among the winners of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) National Awards 2021. The stadium now eligible for the Stirling Prize as ‘Building of the Year’.

The arena was praised as a "tour de force in stadium design".

The judges praised it for "delivering an unparalleled experience for the multiple users of this collection of buildings.

"Uniquely, it is located on a high street, helping to embed it in the local community."

This might seem incidental to many, but American football star Derrick Henry, a Tennessee Titan's running back, wearing a Tottenham top (you can see our badge in yellow in the centre) will see his followers and Titan followers sporting it too.

That simply helps, in a small way, to raise our profile across the pond.

Henry set the national high school football record for career rushing yards with the Yulee Hornets, thus his career gets media attention.

Top 4 - 78% Chance

Against Crystal Palace at the weekend, we aim to make it a perfect 4-0 winning start to our 2021/22 Premier League campaign

Tottenham last achieved a 4-0-0 start to the Premier League in 09/10 under Harry Redknapp (scored 11, conceded 4) and we went on to finish 4th that year to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

On the 23 occasions teams have made a 4-0 start to a domestic season in the Premier League era, 78% have finished the season in the top 4.

  • 8 (35%) have won the league (Man City, Chelsea x 4, Liverpool, Man Utd)
  • 6 (26%) have finished 2nd (Chelsea, Man Utd x 2, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle Utd)
  • 2 (9%) have finished 3rd (Man City, Chelsea)
  • 2 (9%) have finished 4th (Man City, Tottenham Hotspur)

Of the remaining 5 (21%), they finished 6th (Newcastle Utd), 7th (Sheffield Wednesday), 10th (Everton), 11th (Watford) and 13th (Charlton Athletic).

Only 43 teams have started a Premier League season with a perfect 3-0-0 record and only one other teams has done that with three 1-0 wins, Liverpool under Brendan Rogers in 2013/14.

They drew their 4th game.

Charlton Athletic were a mid-table Premier League team under Alan Curbishley (manager 1991 - 2006, the season of their 4-0 start 05/06), the former West Ham United midfielder, whom they sacked and immediately saw their fortunes decline.

The grass is not always greener. It was a shock when he left and they should have kept hold of him, but ambition without the finances to back it up has seen them drop through the divisions to 19th in League One today.

On January 2st 2006 Spurs bought Danny Murphy off them and on 1st August 2007 we let him go on a free transfer to Fulham.

Darren Bent joined Luke Young, Chris Parry and Chris Powell at Charlton that season.

Well that's it folks.
