Tottenham Talk on Monday 6th Sept

Brazil-vs-Argentina

Morning Top of the Table folk and welcome to Tottenham Talk on Monday 6th September after a weekend where I couldn't sleep at nights and didn't surface from my pit until ten past two in the afternoon.

That is really going to mess up my sleeping, but I'll be able to get plenty of writing done at night, in the wee small hours and converse with Spurs fans abroad.

BREAKING NEWS: Unsurprisingly, the Brazil vs Argentina game was stopped after 7 minutes as Health Officials and Brazilian Federal Police entered the field of play to detain the four players who have not quarantined.

Giovanni Lo Celso, Cristian Romero, Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa) and Emi Buendia (Aston Villa) failed to declare they had come from England instead flying to Caracas, capital of Venezuela and claiming to have entered the country from there.

In Brazil, if you have been in the UK you have to isolate for 14 days.

Argentina-Team

Buendia, Romero, Lo Celso and Martinez lied saying that "they were not in England" when they literally played their matches during live TV, what did they expect.

Hopefully they get deported and have to isolate here for 10 days, then be available.

Technically they could be jailed but that is unlikely to happen given Anvisa, an organ of Brazil’s Health Ministry, has ordered the immediate detainment and deportation from Brazil of Lo Celso, Romero, Buendia and Emi Martínez.

Eric-Dier

Eric Dier, the man you all seem to love to incorrectly hate, is nominated for the  Premier League Player of the Month and quite rightly too.

He has been our best defender in the opening three games.

The non-homegrown Englishman started last season well, with Alderweireld, and lost form in January being lambasted by many for mistakes that were actually caused by and thus at the feet of Spurs captain Hugo Lloris and fellow central defender Dávinson Sánchez. often poor positioning and tendency to get beaten very easily.

Dier has basically made one mistake in the opposition half against Wolves while trying to dribble. There was no defensive midfield cover so it definitely was a wrong option.

Sánchez had a poor first-half in the first game against Manchester City and was beaten by the byline in our own box against Wolves, something that happened several times last season.

Both have improved but I'd still vote for Dier over Sánchez any day of the week and he will surely end up being paired with Romero.

Let's look at his stats.

Shots: 2

Fingers crossed that our perfect three from three start with no goal conceded is remarded with both the Player of the Month and the Manager of the Month for which head coach Nuno Espírito Santo has been nominated.

Snippets

Erik Lamela on Bryan Gil: “The Premier League is an incredible league. He has great potential, he is very young. I saw him in a match and he has a bright future ahead of him. Tottenham are a good group, they will welcome him well.”

Gareth Bale: "Returning to Tottenham helped in making me happier. I needed such a move."

Gareth Bale: "I think it's always good to be in a good environment. That's the biggest reason I went to Tottenham as I knew it would be a good environment for me. I had a great time at Tottenham. It definitely helped me mentally be back in a happier place."

Tottenham didn't sign Takehiro Tomiyasu, despite having a deal all lined up because of Japhet Tanganga and his performance against Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling in Spurs victory over Manchester City.

Tanganga was due to go out on loan but that one performance changed everything and that of course also helped our homegrown quota, both in the Premier League and UEFA European competition.

The club decided he should stay at Spurs, which is what he wanted anyway, but Spurs also decided not to sign the Japanese international when it became clear Barcelona had to sell another player, thus we pounced for the highly-rated Emerson Royal to replace Serge Aurier.

Emerson was a player we made moves for last summer.

This will allow us to move Matt Doherty on, either in January or next summer, unless he shows sharp improvement.

Franck Kessié has rejected AC Milan's contract extension offer. Tottenham have already made him an offer for next summer that is more than the Milan offer. Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool are also interested in signing him as a free agent next summer.

Kieran Tripper on Spurs selling Mousa Dembele: ”Ask anyone that's played with him, he's the best player I've ever played with. I personally feel if we kept him for a further five months we would have won the Champions League final."

Lucas Moura: “I still have wood to burn. I’m feeling very good. Physically. I’m playing in a big league, in a big club. I have the goal of winning a title with Tottenham, which I haven’t achieved yet. I still have some goals to achieve here.”

Biggest transfer net spend among PL clubs in last 5 seasons...

1. Man Utd - £480m
2. Man City - £472m
3. Arsenal - £337m
4. Chelsea - £239m
5. Everton - £221m
6. Spurs - £207m
7. West Ham - £197m
8. Aston Villa - £194m
9. Brighton - £188m
10. Wolves - £181m

So Arsenal have spent the third highest amount and are bottom of the league showing spending right to be just as important as spending.

Both Manchester clubs have circa £200m more income than Spurs, Everton have had a new owner, have been outside of European competition so different Financial Fair Play rules apply to them, the same with Aston Villa.

Spurs sit top of the table at the moment and fingers crossed, time will tell we have spent well this time.

Have a wonderful day and keep smiling, we are top of the Premier League.

Well that's it folks.
