Tottenham Transfer Talk on Tuesday with THBN

Fernando-Costanza
Are Spurs following Fernando Costanza?

Tottenham Transfer Talk on Tuesday with THBN begins with news that Jose Mourinho (like me) doesn't rate Kyle Walker-Peters and is keen to offload him.

The only clubs who would be interested are lower in the table than us and being mid-season would obviously much prefer a loan move.

That is why there is talk of a loan, it isn't a loan move to give him game time to bring him along and see an improved player next season.

He is nowhere near being a top-four player and has no future at Spurs.

As you all know we are watching 20-year-old (21 in February) Boubakary Soumaré at Lille but he isn't the only young defensive midfielder we are watching.

Portuguese Under-21 international (2 caps) Florentino Luís is another on the watch list. We have sent scouts across to Portugal to watch the 20-year-old (21 in August) play for Benfica.

Called a wunderkind, he is being tracked by all the top clubs in Europe.

Benfica relied on their academy to win the Portuguese Primeira Liga for the 37th time in 2018/19. They played 5 U-23 players regularly including Luis.

He was a part of the Portugal U-17 and U-19 teams that won the European Championships back to back, a feat not achieved before. He has immense potential as a defensive midfielder and has over 100 professional games under his belt already.

His tackling is very strong as is his reading of the game, positioning, awareness and thus interception skills. He also has a low foul conceded rate and shows intensity to recover the ball in the opposition half. Of his 92 interceptions, almost half were in the opposition half allowing Benfica to quickly attack again.

Benfica now play a 4-4-2 system full of youth, pace, creativity, quick transitions and goals. Luis plays the deeper role as a defensive midfielder, moving the ball to either side and allowing a second defensive midfielder to link with the attack.

He looks for block penetrating balls, balls through a midfield line to a teammate between the midfield and attacking lines. His pass accuracy last season was 92% and his forward passing had an 89% success rate.

His play allows Benfica to play with advanced full-backs which would suit our current style under Mourinho and would complement Ndombele nicely.

His main weakness is in the air as he is only 1.80m tall (5ft 9in).

Benfica have set a £101.99million (€120m - AUS$193.60m - US$134.36m) release fee on him.

Jack Clarke is wanted by a whole host of Championship sides including Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Millwall, Preston North End and FA Cup opponents Middlesbrough.

Nottingham Forest seems to be the favourites but his next loan will be to a club who are going to play him regularly.

Fernando Costanza is a Brazilian right-back playing in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A side Botafogo from Rio de Janeiro.

The 21-year-old (22 in November) had a loan spell at French side Lille (30th Aug 2018 - 22nd April 2019) and his agent, Marcio Bittencourt, is speaking to two Premier League clubs this week as are the Football Decision Committee of Botafogo.

Spurs Assistant Head Coach, João Sacramento was assistant manager at Lille while Costanza was there before joining Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

Costanza is a quickly improving plater in Brazil. He started out in the Botafogo B team at 18 and had a season with the Lille B team. Now he is in the first team back in Brazil.

He is of interest to European clubs because he has an Italian passport since he was 19 and therefore there wouldn't be any work permit problems.

We have enquired about 20-year-old (21 next January) Chelsea fan Max Aarons, so have Manchester City, Manchester United, who have previously made firm offers and Leicester City.

Norwich does not want to lose him in January however and would only countenance a deal if he is loaned back to them for the remainder of the season.
