Spurs too have three young strikers next season

Everything is pointing to Spurs having a very young strike force next season, two proven Premier League goalscorers and one the next generation coming through.

Our first choice is, of course, 22-year-old (23 next July) Hatty Kane, 22-year-old (23 next August) Saido Berahino and 19-year-old (20 next March) Timo Werner.

The season kicks off against Manchester United at Old Trafford with Harry Kane up front, our lone striker while we wait on the other two. Transfer deals are complicated things and the negotiations over every little detail can take ages. Simply because a deal has been agreed in principle by all parties and figures worked out the financial side isn't simply a matter of we will pay you this, OK where do I sign.

Which will come in first is open to debate, both strikers are happy to come to Spurs but as is so often the case, one, Berahino, wants to wait to see in Manchester United or Manchester City follow up their interest. The delay is not of Tottenham's doing and we won't be waiting until deadline day, he has already seen the training complex.

As for Timo Werner, you may see him in the stands on Saturday. Our emphasis on youth and giving it a chance is a pull as are the young players on show against AC Milan and Real Madrid. Tottenham are showing that we can develop players, that our academy system is top notch. How many times do you see a young player go to a club and never play for them, with us if you are good enough Pochettino will select you.

Then it is down to you, none of this run of games rubbish the fans come out with, you get a chance you take it. That's what quality players do so if you want to be top quality then you have to have that sort of mindset. Just look at Dele Alli or Josh Onomah, have they said I need a run of games to build my confidence, make me feel a part of the first team, no they have performed from the word go.

They may only be pre-season friendlies but just like Mason did on the USA and Canada pre-season tour last year, they performed to show the boss what they can do. Spurs fans are now clamouring for Alli to play on Saturday, he won't and he shouldn't, it's a totally different kettle of fish but as I have said previously he should be in every UEFA Europa League game to start the season.

They are pressure games, Tottenham have to qualify from the group so he will learn and develop from the situation mentally which will bring along his general play. Tom Carroll in the number 10 role and if we are going to convert Eric Dier into a holding midfield player then he should play as well.

Qualifying for Europe was essential for the club, both in terms of exposure but also in terms of player development. How would these players develop if all we had was the Premier League? They wouldn't get a look-in if the players in the team were performing.

It is madness for fans to be hoping we don't qualify, you simply play the youngsters, the second string and leave the first-team players at home. They shouldn't be needed until knockout stages begin next year so the tournament should have little effect on Premier League results if we approach it that way. Too many times we have played someone like Christian Eriksen, now we should e saying to Tom Carroll this is your tournament, we are tasking you with being our creator.

This is the cut-throat world of professional football, the Europa League should be his chance then it's sink or swim time. We find out if we have a player or not, the skill is there, the tournament will tell us if the mentality is there too.
