Little chance of Paulinho joining Flamengo

Paulinho was one of the 'Summer Seven' and to put it bluntly has flopped. He was fine until injured in a Charlie Adams tackle and has not been the same player since.

The Brazilian was bought as the Brazilian answer to Frank Lampard but despite a good start he seemed to lack composure in front of goal, he scored goals but should have scored a lot more, Lampard would regularly bang in 20 a season.

He is now a pass backwards and sideways player, retaining possession but doing nothing creative with it, which when playing instead of Mason is not what is required. The 26-year-old has even looked disinterested at times so Tottenham want his £60,000-a-week wages off the books.

A report in Brazil suggests Flamengo want to take him on loan but that has very little chance of success, there is little benefit in it for Tottenham. Folando de Flamengo report that Rio de Janeiro based Flamengo, currently 17th in Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, have made enquiries about bringing Paulinho home.

For Tottenham though there is little or no benefit to the deal. Flamengo can not afford his wages so Spurs would have to subsidise him, defeating the object of getting him off the wage bill and he we would still be in the same position in a year when he returned to the club. All we would do is delay a problem with no guarantee that he would increase his value while we received a loan fee to cover the instalment due to Corinthians, the club we purchased him from.

His sale will not only free up wages for a new signing but will raise revenue as well. Paulinho currently has a contract until 2018 so he has one more year before his value starts to drop further from where it is now, a players value is partly determined by the length of contract he has. Clubs target players with a year left on their contract because they get a player who will be worth more as soon as he signs a contract than the fee to sign him. In addition of course, they get a better footballer than they would normally be able to afford.

Corinthians have also made enquiries but his most likely destination is still Italy, although there was also interest from Spain in January but his wife's pregnancy prevented any transfer he revealed. Paulinho himself also feels his immediate future lies in Europe, their is greater earning power in Europe than South America so Franco Baldini will be offering him through his contacts.
