Pochettino on Yedlin

DaAndre Yedlin started training at Tottenham on January 7th and has recently been away with the USA side to play a game in Chile and a game in America against Panama, during which he picked up a minor injury.

Vlad Chiriches was not allowed to leave for Roma during the winter transfer window as he is providing cover at right-back for Kyle Walker, that indicated that the club would be giving Yedlin time to adjust to a new country and a new style of football. That has now been confirmed by Mauricio Pochettino to FutbolMLS.com.

Pochettino on Yedlin

"DeAndre only recently arrived in London, and like all young players needs to go through an adaptation period, where he gets to know a new way and new culture.
"We have to work this transition carefully and slowly, giving him the necessary time to be able to acclimate on and off the field. Then, he will be able to show off his qualities.
"But it's obvious that if he's here, it's because we expect much from him. We knew he was a player with lots of potential, who's already done some interesting things in MLS and has additionally played in the last World Cup.
"That's why we decided to bring him over sooner, and to begin working with him little by little."

As I have mentioned before it is not until next season that he will be the back-up right-back, this season he will probably receive cameo roles that are carefully managed. It would be ideal to bring him on in a position where we are comfortably winning to help him get over the natural nerves he will be feeling.

The remainder of this season will be spent learning the system and his role within it as well as working on his defensive game, which by all accounts is the weak area. Going forward he is excellent and he has sensational pace, which helps immensely as we use overlapping full-backs in our system.
