The win that is more than just three points

The emphatic 5-3 victory over the strongest Chelsea team was more than just a win, more than just three points, it was a statement to the squad, the players who played, the hierarchy and the supporters.

The win that is more than just three points

There have been many doubting that Mauricio Pochettino had any credentials, any right to manage Tottenham Hotspur by fans who it seems are only interested in names and big money signings, even if they are flops. For where Tottenham are that is pure fantasy.

There have been players too, who have not bought into what Pochettino wants to do, how he wants to play, which caused a split within the playing staff. The two most important factors in football are mentality and movement, the hallmarks of Pochettino's system.

The Argentinian was the choice of Joe Lewis and Tottenham then conducted possibly the most in depth analysis of a potential manager or head coach, both inside and outside football, that we have ever done. His system played the correct way, is the Tottenham way, push and run.

The strategy of Daniel Levy and the board settled on his style on play as the Tottenham style of play for the foreseeable future. The strategy of playing a consistent playing style while developing youth players who will save the club fortunes in the transfer market under a long term manager/head coach hasn't changed. It was hoped AVB was that man, he wasn't. The playing staff needed to learn a winning mentality which is so much more than just trying to win a game of football.

When you pick a head coach, when you adopt a playing style, it is essential playing understand what is required and see that the system, the style can be successful. If you believe in something you give it everything you have, if you don't you don't and thus we had a power struggle again. Certain players decided this was not going to work so while they try, they were not trying with conviction. The club stood by Pochettino and the dissenting voices were told in no uncertain terms to get on board or get out.

Since then there has been an upturn in our fortunes, the players are now doing on the pitch what they were only producing on the training field before.

"We are in a process and we need to believe. Victories like today, you can improve more quickly. Situations always change very quickly in football but we have improved a lot in the last few months and I think we are stronger now."

That one performance gives the hierarchy confidence they have the right man, it tells the players this works, it gives them the belief now that if they throw themselves wholeheartedly behind the head coach their are potential rewards, it gives players who don't want to step down a grade of club realisation they had better buy in and give it everything or they will miss out on the chance of trophies and or Champions League football.

The result will give a mental boost, now the players can say we can beat the best but we can still get better and that will breed harder work, it will breed a winning mentality, a mentality that says, I can do more.

That should produce a stronger squad so it's important new signings are of the right mentality and we offload the passengers. The restructuring of the recruitment of players is a part of that process, the head of recruitment now has to step up to the plate and show his quality.

For the doubting fans it is an eye opener, a glimpse that the system works if executed correctly, in other words with off the ball movement. Robbie Savage highlighted an area the average fan doesn't see, Matic being drawn out of position for our attackers to exploit. So frightened of Christian Eriksen were they that when he drifted wider, Matic went with him, Kane took advantage for the first goal. Eriksen didn't even touch the ball.

Slowly but surely Pochettino is winning over the players, winning over the fans.
