Summer signings more likely for Spurs

A bit of a quandary for Tottenham with news from France that Besiktas have spoken to Younes Kaboul, or at least his representatives, to see if he would be interested n playing fr the Turkish outfit.

Summer signings more likely for Spurs

It's not a question of whether Spurs want to sell him, he is not a part of Pochettino's future at White Hart Lane, but whether to hold out for the transfer fee Daniel Levy wants or let him go cheaply to free up a squad place.

Kaboul has not played in the Premier League since the defeat to Stoke City on November 9th and not for Spurs since Besiktas on 11th December in the UEFA Europa League. He hasn't even been in the squad for the last 5 Premier League games having sat on the bench in the previous 3 and not been in the squad the game before that, so not in the squad 6 out of the last 9 Premier League games. He wasn't in the squad for the FA Cup third round at Burnley and last sat on the bench in the League Cup against Newcastle on December 17th.

The club need to reduce the wage bill and free up some non-home grown squad places before we can bring players in. At the moment we have a group of players being left to rot, Benoit Assou-Ekotto is taking up £40,000 a week of the wage budget, Kaboul was on £35,000 a week but an annual rise and a rise for the captaincy will have taken him past BAE. Add to that Emmanuel Adebayor on around £120,000 a week and you have suddenly topped £200,000 a week being thrown away.

Assou-Ekotto will be out of contract at the end of June, Aaron Lennon earns around £50,000 a month, another not playing, Etienne Capoue was reportedly offered wages of £65,000 a week by Cardiff so is unlikely to be on less at Tottenham.

That takes the bill to £315,000 being paid in wages for players not wanted and if you add in Kyle Naughton, who is in the £20,000 to £25,000 a week range you move up to £335,000 a week. Brad Friedel will surely not get another contract in the summer saving a further £40,000 a week pushing it up to £375,000.

Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto, Adebayor, Capoue, Lennon, Naughton, six players we could do with offloading, plus Friedel retiring, which then allows some leeway for new signings.

What Spurs do not wish to do is pay through the nose for players, so there is no chance of signing players like Morgan Schneiderlin at £27 million when there are purchases like Fabian Delph to be had for around £3 million. Buying players from abroad is cheaper, Vlad Chiriches is on £30,000 a week, but we are limited in the number we can have in the Premier League squad.

I would have thought DeAndre Yedlin would be coming in on Naughton wages, given that he'll be a junior member of the squad so that would bring the saving down to £355,000 a week.

Arsenal pay players like Sanchez £140,000 a week, we simply can't afford to do that and have to cut our cloth accordingly. Signing 6 players on £50,000 a week would eat up £300,000 and remember we need to reduce the bill so it's not just transfer fees we have to consider. If we can we afford the wages of our main target within the wages budget then great but if not we have to look elsewhere.

Moving players on is difficult so unless we can do so then it may not be the eventful window some had anticipated. The main transfer activity may have to wait for the summer.
